The frontman of recently deceased, much loved Welsh psych-folk pop quartet Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci brings his delicious mix of techno-folk crossovers and disco blowouts to the Spitz. Combining the infectious playfulness of early Mynci with the beautifully realised folk-pop of their later years, Childs’ new solo album, Chops, is something of a marvel. Ice cream stall vendors fall in love with peanut sellers, a girl lives in a cave with only a dwarf and nuts for company, and the idea of surf rage inspires a plaintive mantra such as ‘don’t steal my wave’. With the ‘wyrd folk’ revival picking up serious speed, Mynci’s influence is everywhere.
