Channel 4 are sick of making music list shows, this time it's SERIOUS...

This October - November, the UK will get its very own Music Hall of Fame, asserting just who the Greats from the past five decades of music are. But be fearful, it'll be voted for by the public after a round of nominations from industry experts (read also: old git music journos and aging stars of yesteryear).

According to the press release, the shows will climax with a "spectacular" live event celebrating the inaugurated artists and featuring great collaborations, classic renditions from contemporary legends and specially created tributes.

Initial’s (one of the shows makers) Chief Executive, Malcolm Gerrie made the following reasonings for the show: “Despite Britain’s position as the second largest supplier of hits in the world this will be the first UK event to recognise music legends throughout the genres and decades. It will also be the first event of its kind to empower the public - they decide.”

However, there are a few rules: Artists become eligible for the UK Music Hall of Fame five years after their first record was released and can be any nationality as long as they have been successful in the UK. Shortlists have been drawn up on the basis of record sales, critical acclaim, entertainment value and reputation in the live performance and song writing arenas.

DiScuss: Who'd be in your hall of fame for the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s? Who should be nominating?

Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

If there was a DiS one, I would imagine The Libertines would be nominated for the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's.

Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

i agree.
these lists are so pointless.
unless George Formby gets a mention of course, and then it will all be worthwhile.

Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

50's has gotta be elvis.

Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

Radiohead for the '90's surely. Can't think of another commercial band that have pushed the boundaries so much to try and reinvent what they're meant to be doing...

I can see the bands they pick for the '90's being shameless rip-offs of 70's and 80's bands though sadly.

Re: Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

Re: Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

"classic renditions from contemporary legends and specially created tributes".....sounds more like it'll be Ronan Keating covering 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go'.....

*runs for the hills*

Brits Go Yankie: UK Music Hall of Fame?

> and can be any nationality as long as they have been

Um, thus rendering the whole concept of a UK hall of fame even more pointless than it would've been already, surely?

Anyway, here's hoping Massive Attack do get in, as they're clearly the best band of the 90s. Them or Aqua...
