I detest the way self-destruction is romanticised.

When a person self-destructs they turn entirely inwards and become like a black hole. It is the worst thing in the world when someone you know chooses that path, because being with them at that time feels like having the life sucked out of you. It's an uncanny and horrible experience that I wouldn't wish upon anyone, and is probably not unlike the feeling you'd get from being in the same room as a serial killer or the likes of Saddam, apart from the fact that the palpable poison emanating from the person is directed inward, not outward.

I haven't inherently got a problem with drugs, but you have to be a very well-adjusted person to be able to play around with strong drugs like heroin and not develop a problem, and in truth, most people's idea of a good time doesn't involve taking powerful analgesic sedatives and lying down on the floor in a stupor... it's an inherently inward-looking thing to do in the first place. Sadly junkies all believe themselves to be well adjusted, and kind of construct this artificial reality where the rest of the world simply 'doesn't get it'... a kind of secret club whose members, having squashed their personalities into the same single dimension, believe themselves to be perfect soul-mates.

I worry a lot about stoners I know, who smoke to calm their minds... it's a small step from one downer to a stronger one.

There's a difference between being 'kewl' and being terminally ill. Some people are born into bodies which won't function and still make the most of their lives. Others are born with physical privellage and throw it all away and wait for someone else to put it all right. Don't get my wrong, I feel as sorry as hell for addicts and their families, but these guys are not 'trendy'. They have a psychological condition which is going to kill them if allowed to run its course. All this 'voluntary rehab' is bullshit. If people are that far gone they should be forced through the physical withdrawal stage and given thorough and intense counselling afterwards. We are selling our rockstars short by letting them beleive they have to suffer so to win our respect. And they are selling us short by implying we can copy and survive.
