Forget the image, forget the past, forget the nagging feeling that here is a band too old and with too many celebrity hangers-on to be vital. The Prodigy should have died young and left a good looking corpse (aka ‘Music For The Jilted Generation’) or at least called it a day to count their cash post-‘The Fat Of The Land’. They didn’t.

There’s no loony-haired maniac gurning in a murky tunnel this time around; no prowling cat’s-eyed gargantuan ripping out raps menacingly. Just Liam Howlett, standing defiantly with middle fingers aiming forwards, hoping you’ve forgotten that Crispian Mills collaboration and ‘Baby’s Got A Temper’.

But – the crucial but – while Howlett may show his age occasionally throughout ‘Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned’, minus the circus-freak sideshow, all that remains is some very slightly contemporary dance music to get down to.

If electroclash left you cold – although there’s little colder than a fan of that hideous genre – then this is, idealistically, how it should have sounded. Easy as it is to guffaw when Howlett waxes lyrical about recently investing in a laptop to facilitate this album, without realising naturally it makes him sound like a grandparent bigging up televisions, it does the job. The synths are trademark Prodigy and, if they happened to be any fatter, would be called Michelle and enter Pop Idol.

Much-maligned movie star-turned-semi-joke singer Juliette Lewis may invoke mass cringing on ‘Hotride’ (fuck off, you and your “hot-air balloon”), but her fractious, fractured shouts fit opening blast ‘Spitfire’ with perfect poetic aplomb: the words do indeed appear to be flames furnace-fed from her mouth.

And that’s where Howlett’s genius lies – he maintains a near-faultless eye for placing samples and soundbites to the point where they blend into his music without ugly cracks, often making them androgynous to the point of confusion. At an aural glance, Lewis and Princess Superstar (the latter on ‘Memphis Bells’) could both be rocking alternative sets of genitals. Jesus, even the Ping Pong Bitches sound amazing on the effortless cool of ‘Girls’. Kool Keith and Twista put in sterling raps to boot.

The futuristic crunch of ‘You’ll Be Under My Wheels’ – which, currently soundtracking a BMW advert, is upping an interesting Teutonic battle against Aphex Twin users Mercedes – shows Howlett is still capable of bashing a fine bass-line out, although he does get a little lost sporadically when the big-name guests retreat.

The ultimate telling moment is saved until last. Because any man able to avoid Liam Gallagher’s voice becoming the usual tired self-parody pastiche, and even usurp it with his beats on ‘Shoot Down’, can’t have lost the plot. Can he?

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

It's repetetive and crap. Utter crap. I listened to it once and then took it back. Don't waste your money.

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Do they still let you do that? I thought if you bought a disc these days you were stuck with it.

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

it depends on the shop. but you can just give them a story like 'i brought it for my brothers birthday but he already had it' normally works. they might no refund you the money, but they should give you store credit.

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Hehehe, funny you should say that, happened to me today! Only got sodding store credit, evin though I payed with cash! And I gave them my receipt! Wasters....

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

ah but what you can do is just spend 10.99 (or price of most albums) and get unlimitd cds.
get one cd -> take it home -> listen -> copy it ->take back to shop, give a nice story -> get store credit -> get another cd -> repeat process.
obviously if you do it alot they suss you out, what you have to do is do it randomly, not to often and wear a variety of disguises. like different hats or even a fake moustache...

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Well, I live in the Isle of Man, and it has ONE record store (HMV). They'd easily suss you out. Plus, they kept my original receipt, so the only receipt I have is one that says I returned the original CD.

Ahhhh, games games games.....

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

you miht be able to get store credit without the receipt. depends if the person serving knows what they are doing or not.

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Nope, tried that....don't accept any returns unless accompanied with receipt. Alas, your idea would have worked; as a wee nipper, I used to do that all the time to get a decent collection.

On a separate note, I got the Prodigy album today and I really like it. Maybe people don't believe it was "worth the wait", but it's certainly one of the better albums out this year. Confused as to why people dislike it as much as they do...

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

i used to work for virgin, and generally if you had a reciept you could get a refund, if not swap it or credit, athough it tended to depend on our moods and wether we likes the look of you or not. I think a lot of places are different though.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

It's shit. It'll always be shit. And no amount of remixing can get away from the fact.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

its grreat, as long as you're not expecting the same as Fat Of The Land..

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

its a fuckin quality album apart from the 3 weak middle tracks (action radar/medusa/phoenix), youll be under my wheels is quality. its just the people need to realise that liam has deliberately cut out the commercial "single" aspect that flinty and maxim had on FOTL, and veered more towards the beats of Jilted. worst tracks on AONO are where he is still imitating FOTL too much, cos you just can't do it. its a grower.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

The new single is absolute crap.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

After all the commotion surrounding them did the prodigy really ever have a chance in hell of releasing a new album that people would like and respect?

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Well, I only really discovered the Prodigy about a year ago, so I didn't have to wait 7 years unlike most...and even I can tell you this album is repetitive, bland and boring. The only song worth anything is 'Spitfire' (by the way, there's no way that's Juliette Lewis doing those shouts...unless she's become a man).

Thankfully, I didn't buy this.

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

I thought it was shit when I first heard it, as well, but after a few listens, the groove just hit me, and now I love it. This is not a pop record in the way FOTL was. You just have to get in the mood. Try 'The Way it Is' for instance, and observe the moment you start loving it. Best tracks: 'Spitfire', 'Girls', 'Action Radar'

The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

Well, I like the single. But I can't be bothered to buy the album yet.

Re: The Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned

the new single is absolutely shit. if you want the album (fools!) i suggest you copy it from someone else as its really not worth that amount of money.
