The Detroit Cobras: Cha Cha Twist
Diet Coke.
'As featured in.'
Hmm. What great phrases.
It's times like these that make me wish I had the wit and sharpness of a Bill Hicks. But.. I don't. So, over to you, Bill.
"I have wiped entire civilizations off of my chest with a grey gym-sock"
Oh, sorry, wrong quote. But that is pretty funny.
Ah yes, here we are:
"You do a commercial, you're off the artistic roll call, forever..
you're another corporate fuckin' shill', another whore at the capitalist gangbang,
and if you do a commercial there's a price on your head; everything you say
is suspect, and every word that comes out of your mouth is now like a turd falling
into my drink"
There you go.

Did you like the record? Just wondering.-

Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
I mean I can't stand ads, and I love the work of Bill Hicks, but I still wouldn't mind hearing what you thought of the record. How old fashioned of me!-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
But.. talking about the record would only undermine my fragile point.
as the quote says - do the advert and you're off the artistic role-call - we don't talk about the detroit cobras anymore. That's the point.
nish.
But... if you really really really wanna know. email me and I'll tell ya.

Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
Cool - does this mean that DrownedInSound can stop talking about Jet too? :-)-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist

The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
Come on, we all love a bit of selling out. Aphex Twin, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, The Shins, Radiohead, Mogwai (of all people). Indie credentials are old news and drug habits/frilly shirts don't pay for themselves
Playing God is also pretty boring with these things if you can't do lightning and jesus and stuff. -

Radiohead? When were they ever on an advert? I seem to remember them being rather strict on not giving their music to adverts (hence why you always hear dull Radiohead-esque backing music to adverts instead of, say, 'The Bends').-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
think they just did ads in japan and stuff
you get the money, and noone you care about (yes, i mean they) notices.-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
if selling music to an ad is the equivalent of selling artistic integrity blah blah bollocks bollocks - then can drowned in sound please remove the kelkoo advert at th bottom of my screen please? QUICK BEFORE YOU ARE STRUCK OFF THE MUSIC REGISTER!!! bands have bills to pay and mouths to feed. If you want to fund your website and your mag entirely out of your own pockets then thats cool - at that point you can tell these "corporate sell-outs" to fuck off. As it happens, these lot are shite, but thats not the point. stop with this stupid indier than thou stuff-
The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
Think everyone's missing the fact the the Cobs are a lerd of working-mens club muso shite anyroads advert or no advert-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
I really like the band, long before the advert came out.
I think I'll refrain from dissing bands as shit and sellouts while rating stuff like Selfish Cunt.
I mean, they'd never pull media stunts for exposure, would they ?-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
dis has adverts?
i hyavenbt noticed over the last year 0or so, having pop up blockers and stuff. -
The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
I love DiS right, but the indie snobbery thing has to stop. As adumcs says, musicians have to pay the bills and besides some adverts (ok NOT Diet Coke) can be pieces of art within themselves. Many Film directors start out making adverts as they are usually shot on film and give the opportunity to hone cinematic skills. I really liked that Beetle advert with "Strange and Beautiful" as the soundtrack..perfect marriage if music and image.
...we are all fucking consumers and there is no way to escape that...or do make your own clothes out of hemp and construct iPods out of twigs and berries?...for fucks sake.

Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
If you're referring to me Cadd I have no problem with bands selling their songs to ads, I merely commented that they were shit which is purely my opinion and not gospel by any means, don't lump me in with the twats banging on about 'selling-out'. Just shows that a band has reached a level of blandness that will appeal to the sorts of people who are susceptable to Coke advertising.-
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
Sorry I meant 'susceptible', I showed a moment of weakness... -
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
Do you work with Ben? -
Re: The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
It was a broad sweeping generalisation, don't take it personally.
I still think they're a really good band and would love to see them live.
I've had more requests for copies of my Life, Love And Leaving album than any other, so they must strike a chord with some people.

The Detroit Cobras - Cha Cha Twist
The Detroit Cobras are a brilliant band. Fact. Advert or no advert. Who gives a shit if one of their songs was on an advert? If that's what's resulted in them coming to tour in the UK then I for one am ready to profess my love for Diet Coke!-
