MTV.com has reported that a 30-year-old man has been left braindead in hospital following an attack at a Korn gig in Atlanta on Sunday night (July 30).
The article, here, states that Andy Richardson was at the city's Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheater show - part of this year's Family Values series - with his pregnant girlfriend and a mentally disabled child when two unidentified men assaulted him. He'd previously asked them to be careful while moshing, so that they didn't harm the people he was there with.
The men waited until the show had finished to confront Richardson outside. Richardson's friend Edgar Arellano, also at the show, said: "We were all enjoying the concert, we were having a good time, until these two guys came around."
Richardson was beaten to the floor. Arellano added: "He was unconscious. He had blood all over his face when I picked him up."
Homicide investigators are chasing as many leads as they have, but only a vague description of the suspects has been submitted. Richardson's mother, Gloria, has told Atlanta's WSB-TV that her son is on life support and isn't expected to live.
"Can you imagine (that) your child (can go) to a concert and be killed for it, because of people out there fighting to have a quote unquote good time?" she said. "And I'm angry. I'm very angry. Why were the police not there to stop them?"

Isn't it about time that people developed better social skills? It's perfectly possible to enjoy heavy music without causing another actual physical harm - I've been in pits for Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, The Blood Brothers, Deftones, etc (and Korn, actually)... each time it's generally been fun, and friendly, but for the sole individual that wants an actual fight. Shouldn't these people be disciplined properly, somehow? Perhaps have them face proper criminal charges if they're acting in a threatening manner, or if they actually punch out at a total stranger? I'm a good friend of the victim Andy Richardson. Andy was simply protecting a friend at a concert (it was not his girlfriend, that is wrong). Anyone with heart and feelings would have done the same thing in that situation. Andy was trying to help someone and got murdered for it. Hit from behind was my understanding. Thats pretty cowardly. Thats not moshing as I have experienced. Andy even reached out and got security involved and they did not do a thing about it. I hope they find them and they get the worst punnishment available. I think we should leave Andy's image as a friend and a hero intact. I believe this situation has nothing to do with moshing. These sub-human idiots wanted a fight, thats all.

This incident although horrific, must also be seen as isolated. This is a newsworthy story because this doesn't happen often. Although mosh pits can be dangerous places obviously, generally when someone falls over I've seen people help them up very quickly.

Bands usually go out of their way to say onstage "if you see someone fall down, pick them up" and so on - you can't have a security guard for every attendee. Going to a gig has its risks in the way that driving a car does, but ultimately it's down to the fact that in most walks of life there are a few idiots who care about nobody as much as themselves.

Unless I read the article wrong, this doesn't seem to have much to do with violence during gigs. Didn't it say the attack took place after the show, outside the venue? Even the people wanting to prove they're "king of the pit" stop being violent when the music stops and the band leaves.

He's standing in the middle of giant crowd all jumping into each other ferociously, getting down to the sounds of nu-metal. He has a pregnant woman and a handicapped kid with him, but he doesn't care about them, he wants to watch Korn the band. I see a couple of steakheads, probably high on drugs. They bump into him, or the woman, or the kid... this part is hazy. The first guy is incensed - he can't comprehend how if you bring two vulnerable people into a giant mosh pit someone might collide with them at velocity.
The man get's angry. He exchanges words with the steakheads. Vicious words. Words that question their parentage. The steakheads, fuelled by the angry nature of the music they were listening to and also of the barbiturates they're probably under the influence of, beat the man to the ground without further comment, save perhaps to question HIS parentage.
The woman and child scream in fright, but their screams are drowned out by Fieldy's diarreah tone and Jonny Davis singing about how his father abused him. They try to get help, but are hampered by the fact that they're in a mosh pit.
The man is beaten and bloody. It is some time before the situation becomes apparent to the rest of the GIANT MOSH PIT in the ARENA that this man bought a PREGNANT WOMAN and a CHILD with DEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS to.

Granted, it's not often you'll tell a person to calm down only for them to smack you one later, but it is common to have to ask someone else to watch it - being elbowed in the face while dancing = not fun.
I just worry that people - kids - that have never been to a show go to their first or second hard rock show, see this behaviour, and copy it. If people moshed with respect for those around them in the first place, chances are this wouldn't have happened. It can't be 'me me me' in a pit, or else you'll either hurt someone or someone will lose patience and smack you.
