Bizarre and cryptic yet believably bitter lyrics; an undertone of tacit threat; a wiry, high-speed angularity of the kind which leads to a tangible increase in the pulse rate; strange vocal whoops and barks forming an integral part of the melodic whole; an ability, despite the distinct awkwardness, to stick very thoroughly in the head; and, on top of all this, handclaps.

Ladies and gentlemen, I like this album.

In fact, I really, really like it. The artistic debts (most notably to the Pixies) are obvious, and the standard of genius isn’t quite consistent. But frankly, my dears, who gives a damn when the overall impact is so overwhelmingly fantastic?

The Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club possesses a racketty, tick-tock irregularity, a tight angularity married to a paradoxical sense that, at any minute, the whole thing could fly apart under the weight of its own velocity. This framework supports an emotional range that catapults between calculating, malevolent menace and deranged bouts of gutter-level regret, and which does so with an intensity which makes the sparse instrumental arrangements seem far fuller than they technically are. And, as if that weren’t enough to weld the listener’s ear to the stereo, bursts of ear-grabbing vocal and instrumental oddities – screams, yelps, sliding notes – keep leaping out from the whole, compelling any wandering attention to come back and pay close heed.

And close heed is a fee I’m quite happy to pay to this simply cracking album: mixing energy, aesthetics and a sparse sense of complete concentration, it hits the spot completely. A blazingly confident and very fucking impressive debut, and one which has already got tenure on my stereo.

I saw this band at Artrocker

a few weeks back.

Terrible, terrible band.

Did not enjoy it one bit.

mmmm

i saw them live a while back, nice people, but i found it hard to like their music.

i saw this band supporting hooker

at chapter arts centre in cardiff in 2004. they were atrocious then. have they realy improved that much?

they remind me of...

mclusky does anyone else think so...my son spells backwords is on the album 2 and its ace

McLusky indeed

Yes, they do sound a little like McLusky, and that's no bad thing. I can imagine John Peel would have liked this band.

ive been pondering whether to get into them or not

This probably sways my decision in their favour.
Shall check it out.

when i say "get into them"

I dont mean "like them just cos dis says"
just that i investigate further.

'k ?

All you London types

really should attend this, because Buen Chico are just pure aceness. :)

I'm doing merch for them in Exeter...

on their tour in a couple Sundays, they're a fucking AWESOME band.

I love this album, and please anyone who's seen them live once don't be put off, I didn't 'get' them until I bought the 'Hermit Mark/Spells Backwards' single - then it all made (slightly worrying) sense.

They're awesome. Give them a chance.

heard 2 songs a long time ago

Absolutely hated it.
Maybe they got better.

Hmmm

Fantastic band name, smoldering girl on the guitar, and music that thankfully does not sound like every other freaking band of the week. But is it good?

Almost.

true

i do fancy the bassist. she is hot.

I don't know if they got any better

But this album is great. It's completely absurd.

great album, great band

seen them live loads over the last year. production on the album is ace. they don't really sound like any band around at the moment. this is a good thing!

.

whatever people might say they are great! i am looking forward to see them again

Amateur Man...

...What a terrible song! My boyfriend has played it to me a million times and I hate it! Sadly, this has put me off listening to any of their other stuff. Argh, just thinking about that song has got it playing in my head... Get out!

Listen to

Ban the Gin and tell me it doesn't sound like Bandages by Hot Hot Heat, someone please.

VEGC are shit hot heat

Nothing like Bandages, what are you thinking?

I wasn't sure about Amateur Man at first when I heard it on 6 Music, then I saw VEGC live and they blew me away, as good as they sound on CD they raise it up a notch live. I was a bit wary seeing them again in case it was a one off ... it wasn't.

Cant wait to see them in a few weeks in Leeds. They are awesome.

Victorian English Gentlemens Club

It sounds nothing like Bandages!! VEG Club don't sound like ANYONE else, that's what makes them so remarkable.

And as awesome as they are on record you really should check them out live, they assault the senses in the best way possible.....I can't wait!

Calm yo street teaming asses.

I'm not saying they're Hot Hot Heat copyists, just that Ban The Gin's chorus, style of singing and melody reminds me of that song. I'm not slighting the band.

Victorian English Gentlemen's Club

They're such are marmite band. Their peculiarity is painful to listen to at times but that's what makes their catchiness so appealing. 'Ban The Gin' and 'Stupid As Wood' are great.

I love this album...

it's the best thing I've heard this year. The first time I saw them was last year supporting British Sea Power, and I've seen them twice since and am working doing merch for them this weekend at Exeter.

Brilliant, brilliant band, and an awesome album.

This album..

is ACE! never knew they were from cardiff

I saw these on Sunday

it was painful, the club was nicely busy when the second support were on, not heaving but not empty. Then when VEG Club were on there were 43 people...in a venue that could easily hold about 500. I struggled to enjoy them as much as I would have. I felt really bad, they carried on like troopers, acting as though nothing was wrong. Even when I spoke to Adam, he said "Its ok, its a Sunday night, quiet aren't they?" What a lovely chap, what a good band, what a horrible night.

VEGC live

Guess I have been lucky, every time I've seen them the venues have been full, looking forward to seeing them at the Cockpit next week, better sound than most places in Leeds, shuold be awesome.
