Is Garage Rock Dying?

There's always a lot of NME/Garage rock dissing going on here, only now the albums are getting much worse (Hives, Vines, Libertines new ones are all crap) and a whole bunch of arty and often 80's style bands are getting commercial attention, for all the right reasons (Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Futureheads etc.)

So is music finally going in the direction of Arty 80s ness, and away from all the bands NME tells us to love (or the Harry Potter kid likes)? How long can it last?

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

The nme are cottoning onto this though, and are now getting behind this 80's stuff, so now they're behind it the backlash is inevitable. Which is a shame as Bloc Party, Futureheads ect. are great.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Anyway I can hear The Libertines new album? I've heard its out here somewhere

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Usually a 'genre' or 'scene' dies when it's been wrung of every last drop of creativity, originality and integrity. See: Nu-metal, emo etc...

Marketable genres fade away and die
Truly inspirational music lives on...

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

garage rock has always held this promise to die very quickly. the new (international) noise conspiracy album, "Armed Love" is a recommended exception. it shows us what grage rock should be all about...getting down and jiving to some good rock n roll.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

the hellacopters are probably the best of that genre, and theyve been releasing stuff since about 95, so its only the hyped up recent fascination with it thats dying, if not dead. it'll long live on.

Its a shame some people have what they don't like dictated by what the NME do like. I mean it's hard to make an opinion of something thats 100% your own, but this seems to happen too much.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

That doesn't mean to say that I'm going to have what I like dictated to me, more that the scene will eventually fade into obscurity. However, if the music's still this good I'll keep listening.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Wasn't meaning you in particular

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Garage Rock was there before the music fashionistas got on the bandwagon, and it will be there afterwards. It will just disappear from the fashion mags and the NME for about 15 years and then resurface when I'm about 30 or 31.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

i hope it's a slow and painful death, and i hope the libertines get cruified, i hate them, i hate them all

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

go 'underground' and get some peer-to-peer software like Soulseek or DC++. Or pay £500+ on E-Bay for a copy of the new Libertines album, like some idiot did last week... I've had it for ages, I'd have done him a copy for £400...

it's shit, by the way

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

it's grown on me a bit, ive had it a few weeks now. i thought it was shocking at first, but now i just think its a bit average .it has its moments, like.

i'd have done him a copy for a £10!

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

I've had it for ages too, I was tempted to sell a CD-R of it on E-Bay and see if there's still anyone retarded enough to pay a shit load for it. I may get slughtered for this but it was in NME last week that someone paid £819 for one. What an arse!
When you say Garage Rock, it depends what you mean... REAL garage rock is supposed to be people who will play in their garage (hence the name), or play small gigs. But now it's a term for those bands like The Libertines, The Hives, Vines etc. personally I just think someone couldn't describe it so just slapped a label on one fo the bands, so all the people like them got it too!

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

didnt garage rock die about 30 yrs ago?

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

I think the term 'garage rock' should be reserved exclusively for rock made in garages.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

That would kind of solve the problem i guess

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Garage Rock resurrected with The White Stripes 3rd album. It'll die again with their 5th.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Rocket From The Crypt own all the NME darlings' asses.
I like the new Hives album though. 50% RFTC ripoffs and 50% Devo ripoffs cant be bad in my opinion.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Check out the new Reigning Sound album for renewed faith in rock 'n' roll of the garagey persuasion! It'll rock yer socks off!

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Reigning Sound are completely excellent. Most of the 90s school of garage bands are, in fact.
None of them will ever reach massive audiences though, because they commited the crime of not being handsome/

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

garage's dying? I hope so!!!!

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

GARAGE ROCK IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GENRE OF OUR GENERATION. AND HARRY POTTER IS THE GREATEST WIZARD. WORD UP.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Did anyone see Harry Potter's interview in the NME a couple of months back? He namechecked every guitar band around, saying he liked them.

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

Thats pretty much why i stuck him in the first post...

Re: Is Garage Rock Dying?

And i've gotta say that NME person is incredibly funny
