Mumm-ra/Mumrah: the confusion.

It's been bothering me. In case it's been bothering anyone else:

MUMM-RA are a better-than-average indie-rock band from Bexhill-on-Sea. They used to have a sitar player. They don't anymore, but their singer now has a stick.

MUMRAH are a bum-kicking prog-punk-ska sort of outfit from London. They never had a sitar player, or a stick, and they don't want either.

MUMM-RA are the ones you've been hearing on the radio. They've got catchy tunes and videos on MTV2 and stuff.

MUMRAH aren't famous. They have a low-budget EP, 'Huzzah!', out on Riot Music. It has catchy tunes, they're just buried inside less catchy tunes.

MUMM-RA are all quite handsome young men. But type their name into Google and the first page is full of this ugly mummified cartoon dude.

MUMRAH look like ugly mummified cartoon dudes. They're the ones you see when you type their name into Google.

MUMM-RA are good.

MUMRAH are ACE.

I hope this helps.

  • I've been having lots of confused conversations

    about this (i.e. 1).

    Scott: 'They've gone shit!'
    Me: 'It's a different band!'
    Scott: 'No it's not!'
    etc etc.

Mumrah ARE ace. When are you playing peterborough, or have I missed it?

    • I missed it. Bum.

      PLAY ELY!

      • Ha. Warny!

You trouser! We've gone and done Peterborooga already. Where the hell is Ely? And which venue(s) or promoter(s) would you recommend?

        • It's near Cambridge.

I don't think they like bands.

          PLAY CAMBRIDGE!

I recommend the man in the moon, the portland arms or the loft.

          • OK...

...see you at the Man in the Moon on the 13th of November!

            • Now THAT'S service

            • Not quite as good as the Transformers and G.I. Joe but...

I think it's awesome that Thundercats was important enough to some people outside of the US that two different bands decided to name themselves after the villain of the cartoon (one so much so that they didn't care that they would have to misspell the name in order to keep it). Thunder, thunder, Thundercats!! HOOOOOO!!!

            • Bingo!

Unfortunately I'm seeing mumm-ra at the junction that night.

              Soz!

  • ...

    I don't think Mumm-Ra are good.

In fact, I resent them for apparently superceding their superior namesake.

And fuck sticks. Unless they're Chapman sticks.

  • hmmm

Mumrah are great, I've seen them 3 or 4 times this summer ( I'm stalking the drummer). I don't think that Mumm-Ra play music that makes you think or silly cartoon charicters, while Mumrah do. I dance in my underwear to Mumrah...but just go all ugh to Mumm-Ra.

  • doesn't

the ska band have an exclamation mark in their name too?

    • Thanks for pointing that out

      They're also spelt differently.....

  • mmmmmm

saw the ska lot on sunday

    • i've seen them

      i quite enjoyed them. *blush*

      • They're good!

        No shame!

      • Yeah, quit ya blushin'.

And no, there's no exclamation mark. Another common misconception. I say 'common', I mean two people.

        • but

          they're SKA!

          • Another misconception.

There's a bit of ska in there...but also metal, prog, doo-wop and noise. And other stuff. So how about "but they're A MÉLANGE!"?

  • mumm-ra

    aren't better-than-average.
Or average is really really low at the moment !

  • Before I opened this

post I had no idea who either of these bands were. Now I have to contemplate the fact that two seperate groups of young men decided to name their bands after a character from a cartoon. Not even a good one at that. And, one of those bands play ska. Ska. Who the fuck still likes ska in 2006?

    • consider yourself lucky

to not have listen to the new Mumm-ra single...

    • Not trendy people, presumably.

Those who trust their ears more than the NME may find a place in their hearts for music of all styles. 'Even' ska. WOW.
