I'm currently in the process of trying to self release a CD-R single. I'm hoping to be able to design decent artwork myself, due to limited funds mainly. Have any of you any advice with regard to relavent design packages and companies to go with for production?

...

it really depends on what you want, digipaks (stupid fucking name), cardboard sleeves and stuff like that are easy to find, just have a look on t'interweb most places will do the design you want as part of the overall price and it can be pretty cheap. I think it cost us £160 for 1000 with artwork etc.

depends on your budget entirely

If you haven't got much then why not just photocopy something, its possible to get pretty good results, more personal design features always pay off on a short run. I did an album cover just photocopied onto beige cardboard,it looked great, cost nothing.

Otherwise if you want something printed properly then the printers will probably give you a template to work with, usually adobe illustrator is the best way to create the pdf they'll want, which includes the cutter guides.

Hmmm.

Our first CD came between 2 sheets of paper inside an off the shelf plastic CD envelope.

As they were CDRs we gave them away to anyone that asked.
