Re: Best Frontman

my top 3...
kurt cobain, liam gallgher (1994-96), morrissey

Re: Best Frontman

I second that.

Re: Best Frontman

Joey Ramone was the best frontman I ever saw.
All hail

Re: Best Frontman

Kurt Cobain. Jimi Hendrix. Prince is a good call. Jim Morrison (despite his inability to sing/write lyrics). Jonny Rotten (ditto).

Re: Best Frontman

Freddy Mercury surely??

Re: Best Frontman

Robert Plant
Liam Gallagher
Perry Farrell
Robert Harvey

All good

Re: Best Frontman

Dermo.........

Re: Best Frontman

bradley s club
lee from steps

Re: Best Frontman

Iggy Pop - Obviously. I mean, come on.
Johnny Rotten - almost won, but would definitely lose the fight with Iggy.
Bowie - for fucks sake! BOWIE!
Marilyn Manson - deserves a mention.

That guy out of Selfish Cunt - kicked a heckler in the face, and destroyted Snow Patrol's gear, and so earns a mention.

Jarvis Cocker - wins the 'sarcastic indie-sleaze frontman' sub-category, in which he is the sole contender, but singularly fails to compete with the rock bastards above.

Re: Best Frontman

Does John Barnes count for "World In Motion"?

Re: Best Frontman

JAZ COLEMAN - KILLING JOKE

Re: Best Frontman

Knowing that this is just my personal choice :) ...

1) Julian "Jules" Casablancas
2) Kurt Cobain
3) Thomas Mars

...

Re: Best Frontman

Freddy Mercury had something special about him... other than him... Dave Grohl is good in my opnion

Re: Best Frontman

Dave Grohl?
Are you serious? I can't think of many frontmen with less charisma

Re: Best Frontman

Anthony Kedis
Kurt Cobain
Axel Rose
(in no particular order)

Re: Best Frontman

Joe Cardamone
Nick Cave (The Birthday Party)
Jason Spaceman

Probably a whole lot more but I can't be arsed to think about it.

Re: Best Frontman

Oh yeah, and Kevin Shields.

Re: Best Frontman

and also Jeff Buckley. That Live in Chicago DVD is pretty funny

Re: Best Frontman

Pete and Carl

Re: Best Frontman

Ah yeah, I forgot the sole criteria for a good frontman is how much crack he scores in a day.

Re: Best Frontman

it is? Whitney Houston then.

Re: Best Frontman

Do you really think all these people put Pete down as the best frontman because he has a few drug problems? I think it's actually because he's a great songwriter and an incredible performer.

Re: Best Frontman

of course he doensn't, he just hates the libertines.

Re: Best Frontman

Yep...that's right. Cos they're a shit band who write shit songs and Pete Doherty is an abhorent little cunt.

Re: Best Frontman

#1 = morrissey

+ michael stipe, jarvis cocker, brett anderson, jon spencer, frank black, thom yorke, jack white, michael hutchence.

Re: Best Frontman

Kurt Kobain, Joey Ramone, Zack de la Rocha, Chuck D.

Re: Best Frontman

Surely Pharell Williams is the best at Frontin'.

Re: Best Frontman

David Lee Roth.

Re: Best Frontman

i think kendrix, rotten morresy, prince, and several others would make fines ones but no one, and i mean no one can stand in the same room as iggy pop, he's insane, tho what he has been up to latley and its shit

Re: Best Frontman

If we're allowing James Brown, Prince, etc...then clearly Billy Joel circa 78-81 has to be in there. Anybody seen the live footage from Long Island? Woops Casablanca's in ass any day.

Re: Best Frontman

ville valo

Re: Best Frontman

Pete & Carl
Julian Casablancas
Pelle Almqvist
Matt Bellamy
Freddy Mercury

Re: Best Frontman

Anyone seen Metro Riots. Their singer Damo puts on a hell of a show. Also Justine from M.A.S.S and Ross Cummins from Papercuts

Re: Best Frontman

David Lee Roth
Liam Gallager
Ebbot Lundberg
Morrissey
Elvis (not Costello)

Re: Best Frontman

George Clinton

Re: Best Frontman

Please don't laugh (I hate his solo career) and although it was not exactly my cup of tea, I mention him because of the gulf of quality that separates his singles from when he was on tour with his previous band.

Paul Young when he fronted the Q tips, was surprisingly great.

Re: Best Frontman

David Bowie - by miles and miles and miles

Ian McCulloch - honorable mention

Re: Best Frontman

Agree with Bowie, although as he is a solo artist, can he be a frontman? Surely you need to be a frontman of a band.

I don't think he would count purely on the Tin Machine material....

Re: Best Frontman

i'd say Kelson from Jarcrew

Re: Best Frontman

Glad somebody's mentioned the King of Cool himself! Mac's just got an amazing prescence and wit about him, and he reminds me a little of the Fonz.

I remember seeing him on the 'What Are You Gonna Do With Your Life?' tour and they did an epic 20 minute version of 'Do It Clean'. Half way through, Mac clicked his fingers so Will, Les and the band stopped playing. Mac says to the lighting guy, 'can we get a spotlight to the front of the crowd please?', the lighting guy did as he was told and then Mac pointed to a bloke near me at the front and said: "Dun't he look like David Niven!'

The crowd looked at the bloke and laughed and then Mac clicked his fingers again so the band started up the song again! Fookin' Class!

Other great frontmen that deserve a mention are Ian Brown and Bobby Gillespie.

Re: Best Frontman

bowie (though not technically a frontman) and freddie mercury.

Re: Best Frontman

Biggles and Bilo - aka - Peter and Carl.

Re: Best Frontman

Maynard Keenan

Re: Best Frontman

How's about that mad bloke from Les Savy Fav...and at the risk of ridicule, Ste from Cecil was a bit good in the old days...

Cheerio,

Ian

Re: Best Frontman

Freddie Mercury
Meddie Fercury
Fruddie Mercery

Re: Best Frontman

Pete and Carl? Are you joking me? Ahem anyways.
Matt Bellamy
Freddie Mercury
Billie Joe Armstrong

Now THATs a cool mix!

Re: Best Frontman

axl rose
Kurt Cobain
billie joe armstrong

Re: Best Frontman

Mark E. Smith
Nick Cave (Brithday Party era)
Guy McKnight (dunno where that came from, but he's fucking entertaining, he must be Nick Cave's son or something)

Re: Best Frontman

64 replies and not one mention of Mike Patton, Rob Halford or Robert PLant (i think)

come on...

big shout to kelson from jarcrew though

Re: Best Frontman

Can't believe I forgot to mention Mike Patton. He's a GOD.

Re: Best Frontman

I forgot Johnny Thunders. Arse.

Re: Best Frontman

I can't believe no one has mentioned Mick Jagger!

Re: Best Frontman

Duh- ever heard of the spiders from Mars, to the people that mentioned Bowie not being a front man. He was always 'David Bowie and the Spiders from Mars'

To answer the q: Iggy Pop/David Bowie/Liam Gallagher and I loved Jarvis Cocker. He was just so funny!
