Experimental pop heroes, TV On The Radio have won the 2004 Shortlist Music Prize. The New York-based act was awarded the influential prize for its 'Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes' album.

Speaking at the awards ceremony - now in its fourth year, the band's Kyp Malone succinctly said: "We are not the next Damien Rice (last year's winner)" adding "Seriously, this was a great honour. We didn't even expect to be nominated, let alone win. None of us expected this to happen, and we're really happy to be here."

The band closed the concert with a 30-minute set. Also performing were fellow Shortlist finalists Eagles Of Death Metal, Dizzee Rascal and pianist Nelly McKay.

Styled as a U.S. equivalent to the Mercury Music Prize, the Shortlist recognises bands and artists whose latest albums, released between July 1st, 2003, and June 30th, 2004, had sold fewer than 500,000 copies at the time of their nomination. The nominees and winner are selected by a panel of "listmakers," which this year included Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, Chris Carrabba, the Dixie Chicks, Jim Jarmusch, John Mayer, Norah Jones and System Of A Down's Serj Tankian.

In addition to Rice, past winners of the Shortlist prize are N.E.R.D. (2002) and Sigur Ros (2001).

Not sure it was necessarily deserved but it's good to see a band who genuinely are pushing the envelope and making great music while they're at it actually pick one of these things up.

And besides, "Young Liars" deserved to win at least three Shortlist prizes, so I guess it balances out.

thats good, i really like TV on the radio, and the fact the other finalists , except dizzee, are a tad shite its probably correct.

Re: TV on The Radio pick up US 'Mercury' award

eeeeeeeeeeer,
did you see the shortlist? It was without doubt the most competitive and innovative list I have ever seen. YOU may think the Rice album is shite, but it's actually rather good. You ask the million people that have got a copy in the UK. Sigur Ros. SHITE? EH?

The list is an excellent opportunity for smaller bands to get a name for themselves on a bigger stage - and rightly so.

I'd also like to point out that the first NERD album, was the most undefineable album i have ever heard, and I don't think anyone that i have ever ever ever played the album too has said, hmm, yeah, it's all guff. Nadda, there is something for everyone.

Thank god for prizes/awards like this.
