I think at a push he's 34 - but really so what? sadly they wouldnt have been allowed to exist if he'd used his real age - sad isnt it - and stuart Murdoch is pushing it a bit???
I'm sure the same thing happened to Tom McRae a few years ago, turned out he'd been somewhat economical with the truth and was much older than he'd claimed, and had a completely different upbringing to what his press release said. There must be quite a bit of it about I'd of thought
"There must be quite a bit of it about I'd of thought"
Justin Hawkins springs instantly to mind. Is age such an issue? Of course not yet some record companies claim they only sign bands under a certain age cos they like 'em young in order to give them time to 'develop'. This is of course bollocks. I mean, look at the doves. considering jimi goodwin used to be in Sub Sub he must be over 30 yet the doves have evolved so much over the last 5 years it's scary. I hear their new album is an absolute corker by the way.
Isn't it William Orbit produced? I remember someone saying the words "cathedrals of sound!"
the difference is though is that doves are not really the sort of band who are in the public eye (CDUK, the sun, angling times etc) as much as say Franz Ferdinand or the Darkness, so it (age) doesn't really matter.
Also they had that history to back them up which must surely have helped with the them getting signed as they had the contacts. I'm not sure if they were a 'new band' they could've got away with it, which is sad really.
I remember there used to be a band peterborough way called Plastic Hip who were brilliant, but were all about 40 and bald. They never really stood a chance
Fuck me! Someone else from Peterborough! Plastic Hip were great - have you heard the Surgeons, formed from the ashes of the Plastic Hip? They're not all that old, I can vouch for one of them at least being under 30!
yes but if jet for example were all 33 they wouldn't make it out of the rehearsal room if you get my drift and yes Justin Hawkins is very old - nearer 40 than 30 Id say!
"He has always been cagey about his age, and today says he's 28, but is in fact 32 (the music industry is phobic about age - to be a 'hot new talent' and be the wrong side of 30 is an affront to the pop biz's tyranny of youth)."
who justin hawkins or Alex Kapranos - well at least Alex can pass as someone in their late 20s but hawkins looks terrible - and the same can be said for their music
32 but he was 18 when they did their peel session - am on abtu peoople appearing from nowhere who have tried really hard for years and fuinally make it its far more fun that watching some 18 year old gap year types
Yeh Alex Kapranos is called Alex Huntley that is true.
But anyway does it really matter about age? Morrissey and Frank Black have recently made comebacks in their mid-late 40's, and there's load of other examples like that.
yes but in his defense I doubt it would have been good publicity to come out with your first single at the same time Ian Huntley was being sentenced - anyway its better to make it when your a bit older than when youre 19 -at least you have the experience to enjoy it more and if you make it when your young and get washed up at 24 you'll spend the rest of you life being bitter surely
Anybody who says age doesn't matter is right.
But the music industry doesn't think so.
Name one artist you listen to who is over sixty and still releasing successful records.
I doubt he's 37 but wouldn't be suprised if he was in his early 30s. Franz Ferdinand seem to me to exude a certain kind of maturity anyway so I don't think it matters at all.
Wow, what an old thread. Anyway, Alex was called 'Kapranos' when he was a kid, but he moved from Greece to England, and adopted his mum's name (Huntley).
He said he changed it back when he got into the band because it was a more noticable name...
I heard he was 29,and i saw him riding a low rider bixe on MTV and it just didnt look right so i think he might be older just beacuse of that, and he's a tad wrinkly too!
coz you are basically shit and over the hill if you are over 30 and havent made a record - blame the industry and not the kids as they dont care so long as the music is good that's for sure!!!!
Alright, aside from this being a resurrection. I believe he's actually 36.
Still, there IS a difference beyond age in this case. Since Franz are basically playing a rehashed set of post-punk stuff, him being older means he was there the first time, rather than being 'retro' without really experiencing originally?
Does that make sense? Like how all da kids keep resurrecting the 80s because they were only 4 or 5 when they were growing up and didn't have to live through it, hence don't understand why we NEVER EVER WANT TO GO BACK THERE!
and Justin Hawkins celebrated his 28th Birthday party with his PR people a few weeks ago, the day after he celebrated his 32nd with friends and a few days after that he had a party with close friends and family, which was his 40th.
I note with interest that Ricky Wilson is the convenient 27 as well - but I thought the Chefs had being going since about 1900 or something - I love the blatancy
Re: Is alex Kapranos really 37?
He can't be 37 though surely. He could be my dad...
