I think at the drive in is definately up there.
The Flaming Lips.
Converge.
Modest mouse
Ween
Franz Ferdinand.
I don't know
The music scene has had some amazing bands in the past 10 years.
But has also had some really really shitty ones in the past 10 years.
Hard to tell.
I'm sorry, did i just hear someone suggest that Modest Mouse could be one of the best bands of the last TEN YEARS!!? Hang on!! Franz Ferdinand as well!? Christ!! TEN YEARS for heavens sake.........10!!!
"Franz Ferdinand ? The Libertines ?
You people definitely read NME. Well done. "
It's so nice that people have such respect for each other's opinions on here!!
I happen to like Franz Ferdinand (though for me they wouldn't qualify as best band of the decade) and I haven't read NME for years. I have liked them since I first heard their demos on the Beatscene.
Can anyone explain why I suddenly have to stop liking them just because they are now being hyped by the NME.
It pisses me off people being slagged off for liking bands who have the misfortune of having NME backing. Not liking bands purely bacause they are becoming popular is surely just as shallow... if not more so...
Franz Ferdinand are too big and famous for NME's opinion of them to matter at all.
And i don't think that papers hype around them had anything to do with them getting big... it was all about word of mouth, and a very well-run marketing campaign.
stop being so stupid. just because a band is in the NME doesnt mean that people arent supposed to like them. i'm not a huge fan of either band, although i own albums by both, but your comment is just a bit dense and idiotic.
Also - Smashing Pumpkins were in the NME all the time.
"stop being so stupid.just because a band is in the NME doesnt mean that people arent supposed to like them"
I'm glad you have the sense to think that (even if you had to express yourself in such a fucking offensive way!)... but I have lost count of the number of times other people have used the "ooo... you must be an NME reader" as a put down every time certain bands are mentioned... so I would assume not everyone agrees with you!
There are loads of people who go off bands as soon as they start getting any kind of media exposure and start accusing them of "selling out".
This is not a "dense", "idiotic" or "stupid" comment, merely a fact.
I am sure you are not one of these people, but this doesn't mean it doesn't happen!
i could just say someone i like now which i'll presume a lot of people have done (Franz Ferdinand, libertines etc.) which would prolly be deathcab... but i say blur who did actually prove themselves over more than 1 album. And have had a place in my music collection for years.
I didn't mean that any band NME covers can't be good or anything like that. It's just have you read NME recently, the way they hype the libertines is unbelievable.. that's all I meant by that..
I'd say Bright Eyes is another good suggestion too.
Woah. I just actually read through all those posts. I think you all just misunderstood. I don't think the libertines, nor franz ferdinand, are the best bands of the last 10 years. However, the NME comment wasn't an attack on the bands nor the people who like those bands. It was just a reference to how NME think the libertines are like the best band in the world ever, when they're really not. They're alright.. but the way NME dedicates 80% of it's magazine to stories about how the libertines changed people lives, is undoubtedly over the top.
Both bands are reasonable suggestions I suppose. But neither - to my knowledge- have released enough to be considered the best band in the last 10 years. Maybe if the topic was "best band in the last 2 years" they'd have more of a place.
Modest Mouse (listen to Truckers Atlas, Out of Gas, Tundra/Desert, Trailer Trash, All Night Diner, Whenever I Breathe Out/Positive Negative, Baby Blue Sedan - & tell me they aren't the best band of the last 10 years!)
All that has been said about the NME in this (and other)threads is true. However, there was a time in my not too long life time, a time before the internet and digital media, when for young kids living in what we shall call 'the provinces' had no access to good music other than through NME and MM. They were always wankers and their stock is much reduced but still.... like someone said just cos a band is in the mag doesn't make them shit and if they aren't on daytime radio playlists then great, let's give them a spin...
i've got to say that even though they're NOT my favourite band of the last ten years, I just flicked through the replies to this post and couldn't see one mention of Oasis (I may have missed it of course?)
You'd be hard pushed t find a band who have had more of an impact on British music in the last ten years than them- like it or lump it? Blur are definitely up there for sure.
I know I'll INFURIATE people with this, but why is everyone mentioning ther Libertines? I mean, what have they ACTUALLY done in the past ten years? Released a good album?
In that case, let's add all of these- Vines, Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Longpigs etc. etc.
Oasis and Blur were almost single-handedly responsible for bring indie/rock music back into the charts and kicking out the crap like Take That. THAT'S an achievement.
And, to be fair, what about ASH- 1977 was amazing, and though nothing they've done since comes close in my eyes, they're been pretty consistently successful?
And before you think it, I'm not some indie MOR kid- I love At The Drive In, Mars Volta, Libertines, etc., but I just don't think any of them are the best bamd of the decade!
If it was 'the band who'd made the most impact' then Oasis would have a chance, however every album apart from the first one sucks, and thats almost exactly 10 years old now...
were as blur's albums continue to totally rule becoming more mature with still the same great tunes blur obv. the best there shouldnt even be a blur oasis debate blur totally kick oasis ass.
Before you start, yes, I read the NME. I just happen to be able to forum my own opinion and not decide what's good based upon what NME says. I hate a lot of what NME likes, but I think they've definately got it right with The Libertines.
this is best band how can you say a band who has had only one album! especially someone like the libertines jeff buckley would be credible because he had one absolutely amazing masterpeice of an album, the libertines album may be good but its definately not up there with a masterpeice like grace or many other albums it isnt unique or creative they're ok to listen to but until they've had at least 3 more albums you cant say they're the best band of the decade.
Manic Street Preachers most definitely (especially the eary stuff - generation terrorists, holy bible) also Radiohead and yeah, PJ Harvey - she's in a league of her own
clearly Radiohead. for basically doing what the fuck they wanted WHILE simultaneously creating much of the greatest, most moving, resonant and affecting music ever written AND bogglingly, having massive commercial success with it. nice one.
Not many American bands mentioned there, which is either a good or bad thing, or quite possibly both.
My favs:
Blur
Wilco
At The Drive In
QOTSA
Radiohead
The Verve (why nobody mention THE band which was better than Blur and Oasis. Urban Hymns was prob. the best British album of the 90's)
If u wanna mention the Libs, why not go the whole hog and mention Gay Dad? They both got massive hype and did a good 1st album. Howver Gay Dad fell apart, which is what the Libertines won't do until Pete Doherty's found dead, holding a needle in a Camden gutter. This is sadly where drugs will lead a promising young life.
Frankly the list of suggestions could go on for miles, but as a few pointers:
Death Cab
Idlewild
Seafood
Mclusky
Manics (though barely any more - and has anyone read Nicky's "it's the Holy Bible for 35 year old's" comment re the new album - very worrying!
Radiohead
PJ Harvey
But... to stir it up a bit, we really should give thanks to the likes of Limp Bizkit, Green Day (who once were good, 1.039 smooth / kerplunk era), The Offspring, P Roach, Puddle of Mudd (**shudders**) and the whole tragic metal scene that kicked off a few years ago. The bands that rebelled against this pile of big-bucked shite-rock have given (continue to do so) us a really vibrant live scene right now. But you already know that!

Everytime I see it I want to say Nirvana, and then i remember how wrong that would be...
I'd say one of:
Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Sleater-Kinney, Belle and Sebastian, Idlewild, Manic Street Preachers.

For me:
Lightning Bolt and GY!BE
Honourable mentions to:
Melt Banana
Boards Of Canada (althoughtechnically not a band)
The Libertines
Mogwai
Primal Scream
And anything GY!BE associated.
