Does it surprise and worry you that this song is played back to back with Keane on many radio stations? Or are you happy that your rock n roll figureheads are snuggling nicely into the mainstream?

Green Day are now about as punk rock as a latte with an extra shot of expresso; momentarily invigorating maybe, but largely a bourgeois treat for the mid-table minded. ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ may profess to speak for the depressed, confused and misguided, but it says nothing to me about my world. You know how you see pop stars sing about the poor in Africa and it makes you feel a little disgusted?

Quite.

this review is wrong, wrong, wrong - yes i'll admit its overplayed - but its still an ace track and a 1000 times better than keane!this is worht at least 4 out of 5!at least you didnt commit the dreadful crime of calling GD "nu-metal" as one ceefax reporter did!

I don't think I can take another music review. You're wrong.

Good album and this is the track that stood out to me on first listen. Just because it's played on the radio doesn't mean it's not good....blah blah you can probably tell what I'll say next, the predictable 'I don't agree' post, but you are wrong. Very much so.

This song is shite and you'd all think the same if Avril had sung it! It's luke-warm. It's beige. It's background noise. It's supermarket music.

Being played on the radio doesn't mean that you've sold out...it's an ok song, what I found was although I recognised his voice I could easily hear Avril lavigne's voice singing the same song...mixed reviews from alot of friends who like green day!

This is probably the weakest song on 'American Idiot' for me. Should be 'Holiday' into 'Are We The Waiting' with this song smacked towards the end somewhere.

This is the curse of the single - great album tracks that get panned when they're released - expect the same for the manics when they release 'Empty Souls' in the new year.
i still fucking love both tracks - and i can't believe people are saying 'American Idiot' is sequenced wrong- how the fuck else would you lay out a punkrock opera?

Review is spot on. (has anybody seen the awful video? imitations of angst anyone?). fact is gd may have been classed as 'punk' at one time, but it doesn't last long these days. it is impossible to be simultaneously a consistent global supergroup and cutting edge (only band to ever have pulled this off were the beatles). face facts, the song is MOR, a chord heavy simple ballad by a corporate group.

I love this song.

A punk rock opera isn't very "punk".

It always confused me at high school when everyone said Green Day were punk... but I came round to it in the end. They are.

Saying Green Day aren't punk is like saying the sex pistols weren't punk. Which they weren't.

Avril fucking rocks.

i think hes basically saying that they're shite, mate, and that if u come on a music forum with mcfly listed as a band your a fan of people probably won't regard you as very knowledgable in the music scene at all.

in fact, they ARE shite, for once, someone should take a leaf out of Busteds book, and fuck the hell off.

if you look upon mcfly as a "band", you arn't really into music are you?

Now I'm not particularly a Green Day fan so I'm not sat here supporting them out of love or whatever, but I would've thought a "punk rock opera" was "punk" in the truest sense of the word...

It may not be for everyone, but punk to me was always about expressing yourself, being yourself and not following cliches and trends. (And also political reasons which are irrelevant here) Surely not sticking to the traditional three-chord punk shite that's been tossed out for years and at least trying to do something different makes them immediately more punk than the 70's punk wannabes like Rancid etc...

Bit of an old one this but how do you define 'punk'? More about attitude than music methinks. Whereas GD may have held some punk values dear in their early years, they now seem to a parody of a punk band (or rather a corporate record labels best guess of what they think the kids think is 'punk').
The naked truth is that punk was a brief movement in the 70's, although some bands (and only some, GbV??) can really be called 'punk' these days it is more a description of their ethos than their sound. GD may try to sound 'punk' but their not really fooling anyone. Are they?

I like this song, and the album is surprisingly good too. Lyrically it's a bit cliched (Wake Me Up When September Ends is an overall better song and probably should have been released instead) but it's pretty great pop-rock all the same. Who cares if it's punk?

haha not actually heard the original song but my mate sent me a mix file that he got off kazza or something like that. yes u guessed it a mix of wonderwall B.o.B.D and travis. so from that im guessing its a classic Em, D, A, chord turnaround which cant be that bad. Who cares about putting gd into a particular genre. i go on, if its catchy with a good medley then i like it. there i can happily listen to gd or mcfly without thinking " oh dear these ppl aren't "cool" who cares!!! open your minds and listen to music and not follow the associated image etc etc. enough said.

.. as for me ..

I really like this song. The first time listening to it, I was like "Hmm . . . a ballad after their smashing first single. How unoriginal." But then, second and third time .. had me sing along, listen to the lyrics in closer detail .. and now, in the end, I really like it a lot. A solid second single release from their album! :D

I really like this song in the context of the album but i can definitely see why it might be considered a weak single. It needs its "prequel" Holiday directly before it to have the desired impact.

I don't give a monkey's what genre it is. The reviewer is completely wrong. Okay, the song isn't the greatest on the album and they should've released 'Holiday' or 'Wake Me up When September Ends' but its still a corker compared to some of the other needless shite around.

this song came off of a great album, this is a great song possibly not the best but still great. and i dnt no y u came in here mcfly no1 can take u seriously or even note ure opinion based on the fact u support mcfly enough to use them in ure name and as for sayin avril is newer nr gd is another mistake lol oh dear how old are you?
