The Mars Volta walked off stage at the Endfest on Saturday (August 12), after being pelted, in perfect Reading fashion, with bottles of piss.
The band were playing the event - held at the White River Ampitheatre in Auburn (Washington State) and also featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Gossip and Wolfmother - when the crowd turned against them. Presumably lengthy prog-rock workouts weren't the flavour of the day in Washington at the weekend.
Websites including Pitchfork and NME.com have reported on the incident, but as yet the band have not made any official comment. Reports state that Omar Rodriguez-Lopez smashed his guitar against his amplifier before departing the stage, with singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala asking the crowd to find the offending urine-hurlers.
"I will pay $100 to $1,000 to somebody to find the person that's throwing urine up here," he told the crowd. "I will give you free merchandise and a lifetime supply [of passes] to Mars Volta shows. Find that person and kick his ass for me. Bring me his head and we'll be friends."
The band also suffered technical problems prior to their early exit. Their third studio album, Amputechture, is released on September 11.

All of your opinions are worthless. If you dislike the Mars Volta and agree with the piss throwing, then I do wonder whether there is any compassion left in the world. I mean, yes, they are arrogant, self indulgent and show off at every opportunity. This is the case with pretty much every successful band (such as RHCP), just more so with the Mars Volta as they have more talent at their disposal, and so their arrogance/self indulgence/showing off is more obvious and in some cases more annoying - I like to call it jealousy.
To those who disagree with the piss throwing on whatever grounds, I appreciate your viewpoints, but they won't change anything. As we can see here, plenty of ignorant people have voiced their views on here, and said that the Mars Volta deserve what they get for (apparently) playing such "piss awful prog nonsense". Basically, it's a waste of time, my excuse for writing this is that I'm bored and wonder what response I'll get.
People have different tastes, and people should consider that and show more respect, if not to the band, then to the fans of that band. There will have been people at that festival in Washington, who have paid good money to see their favourite band play, only for the experience to be ruined by a bunch of idiots. Just think about how you'd feel if that were to happen to your favourite band at a show you attended.

Even if you happen to hate a band there's no reason to ruin it for the people who do like them by causing them to cut their set short. It doesn't surprise me that it happened at a RHCP show though, as most RHCP fans I know aren't aware of any music outside the top 40.
