Pantera Guitarist Shot Dead - Updated

Dimebag Darrell, founding guitarist of the legendary Pantera and later of Damageplan (pictured), was shot dead at a concert last night in Ohio.The incident happened in Columbus, where Damageplan were performing at the Alrosa VIllage nightclub. A gun-man took to the stage and opened fire during the band's opening song. At least four people were dead and two injured before security tackled the man. He was eventually killed himself.
It is believed that members of the crowd thought that the gun-man was part of the act, and therefore action was delayed. Dimebag was born Darrell Lance Abbott in Dallas in 1966.

'Columbus police Sgt. Brent Mull said the shooter appeared to be targeting the band members. After opening fire on the stage, the gunman turned on the crowd. At that point, an officer shot the man dead, Mull said. Police said there could have been many more fatalities had the officer not killed the gunman.'

The four people (this seems now to be the official figure) killed at the gig have now been named. They are :-
Erin Halk, 29, a club employee who loaded band equipment
Nathan Bray, 23, fan
Jeff Thompson, 40, a bodyguard for the band
'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott, 38, band guitarist
The following is from the Seattle Times:
The story pieced together from witnesses, passersby and police suggests that Damageplan had just begun its first set Wednesday night when Gale went to the stage, followed closely by a bouncer and another club employee.
Gale went to Abbott, started yelling and fired quickly. Abbott folded toward Gale, and a bouncer tried to pull the assailant off him as Gale continued shooting. Gale shot the bouncer and apparently fired into the crowd.
When police received the call at 10:18 p.m., Officer James Niggemeyer was patrolling the industrial, middle-class neighborhood where the Alrosa was a fixture. He raced to the club's back door. When he reached the stage, he saw Gale holding someone in a choke hold. Niggemeyer, 31, shot Gale dead.
When the shooting started, as many as 500 fans streamed toward the exits, but police soon stopped them and took statements from 250 witnesses on buses brought in for the purpose.
Two others were hospitalized. The nature of their injuries was not disclosed.

I don't know whether by security themselves or police when they showed up or if he did it himself.
At least, that's according to the source I have - different sites are saying different things, so don't be surprised if certain facts of this story change slightly over the course of today.

No! I can't believe that. I fear this is another case of an American idiot taking something they read far too far, going out and abusing their all-too-ready access to a gun. Result? Legendary guitarist meets untimely death in beyond undeserved circumstances.
Thisis what they get for re-electing Bush. And as in other cases, the repercussions go alot further than America; Pantera, Damageplan and Dimebag had a huge number of devoted, devastated fans worldwide.-

The rumours going round based on eyewitnesses (of course i'm using the word 'rumours' very heavily indeed because it's probably just silly kids making stuff up) are that the gunman said something to Dimebag regarding the Pantera split and Anselmo needing money etc etc before shooting him.
Whatever the cause, this is a terrible thing to have happened. I really didn't like their music but Dimebag was a phenomenally good guitar player.
Something about the anniversary of John Lennon's shooting as well makes this more sad/sinister.

Latest news from the bands site, i think this is a member of their crew.
I've known them for 16 years. He wasn't just a guitarist, he was a friend. One of the nicest people I've met. Here is what I have been able to ascertain. Realize I could be wrong on some of this, but most of it is gospel.
1) Daryl is dead. We all know this.
2) Vinnie is fine (I have confirmed this)
3) A bassist from the opening band tried to shield Daryl and was shot. I do not know his condition, but I imagine critical.
4) Fans were shot
5) The other member dead is believed to be Pat Lachman. This has not been confirmed, but I have this on very good sources, but it is VERY late for any of us who know anyone to get any info.
6) Dime was taken to Riverside Hospital (DON'T CALL THERE!)
7) A bouncer was shot in the shoulder.
8) Someone was shot in the thigh, I believe this to be the bassist involved, but at point blank range, this may be critical.
9) Three are dead (at this writing) one being the shooter. One is Daryl, I am nearly 95% sure the other is Pat.
10) The shooter shot at Vince, but he crawled away on the floor and hit the deck (and you would too so no bullshit posts)
11) The death toll is now at 5
12) FOr those of you arguing about stupid ####, it was a UNIFORMED POLICE OFFICER who snuck in the back and shot the gunman. The cops received the call at 10:18
13) Mitch was working. He is okay.
14) A Hammer Strength Sec guard was shot
15) The other confirmed dead is a security guard (not the above)
16) There are now 5 confirmed dead.
This is all I know, and all anyone will probably know until morning. Peace be with you all.

Ok I have to admit that I didn't listen to Pantera at all really, but this is bad - everyone mentioning America's fucked up gun laws have a very good point. And the fact that the bastard was shot by a copper I find crazy - admittedly more people could have been injured, but to kill him and allow him to escape justice/ for the family never to see him sent down? Fucking ridiculous in my opinion. Life/death clearly meant very little to the man so wherever he is now he's not going to give a shit is he?!-

I think the police officer shot the gunman to ensure that he/she stopped shooting people.
I don't think reading him/her their rights and saying "you'd better come down to the station" would have worked...
At moments like that I guess you just react and maybe there would have been a more considered way to deal with it, but who knows - I've never been in a situation remotely like that so I can't really comment.

Aye, tis a real shame when something like this happens. As seems to be a big consensus here, I wasn't a big Pantera fan but he was indeed an amazing guitarist and a huge inspiration to many. R.I.P.
I suppose if any good can come out of this tragedy it would be that people higher up in the American legal system take a step back and a serious look at issues surrounding guns and their use. This kind of thing shouldn't happen once, let alone again, and nor should any of the other senseless gun crimes committed. -

seems that vinnie's alive but the singer was killed (i think) and bass player from the support was wounded when he tryed to intervene.-

Strange, i was only watching a programme the other night about the infamous Hungerford Massacre. Mr Dimebag may have been a nice man, who, for all i know, got along with his fans. It's increasingly worrying that because of society as a whole, there are now a lot of lonely people who want to take their anger and frustration out on the world. I don't have an awful lot respect for over rich celebrities who detach themselves from real life, they deserve all the shit they can get.The gun-man should have targeted Posh & Becks, or Bono, come on! you hate them as much as i do.-

Police in COLUMBUS have revealed the name of the man they think responsible for the killings at the DAMAGEPLAN show yesterday (December 8).
Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville allegedly shot four people dead, before being shot by police officers, according to NBC.
Approximately 200 people were in the Alrosa Villa Club when the shooting happened. Local police say that a man climbed onto the stage and shot at the band before turning on the crowd.
Guitarist ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott was shot and killed first, before the assassin targeted the crowd.
Police spokesman Brent Mull told the Associated Press that it was lucky the police had been on hand. He said: "If the officer wasn't as close as he was, I think this would have been a lot worse. It was a chaotic scene, just a horrific scene."
One witness at the show said: "I just saw the guitarist fall down, and we decided to get out of there."
Darrell formed Damageplan with brother Vinnie Paul Abbott after the split of Pantera.
The line-up of the band is completed by Pat Lachman and Bob Zilla on bass.-

09 Dec 2004 Police have identified the lone gunman who invaded the stage at last night's Damageplan show in Columbus, Ohio, USA and murdered guitarist Dimebag Darrell.
Police have identified the alleged gunman as 25 year-old Nathan Gale. At a recent press conference a police spokesman said "We may never know the motive for this." The death toll from the incident is now at 5.
Police have also named two of the other murder victims as Nathan Bray and Erin Halk who are both said to be members of the audience leaving one person yet to be identified
Looks like reports suggesting 2 members had died were wrong. Anselmo is said to be devastated.-

Yeah, i read that too, but i actually though of it before reading it (was thumbing through the latest metalhamer, with the Anselmo interview in it - bit ironic that he says it'll be the last time he talks about Pantera - be very hard to do that now. ) - but there really is a lot of crap floating around about it, it's starting to get hard t otell which is gospel, and which is crap. However, if i ever meet the guy who plans to sell his blood-stained ticket stub on Ebay, i'll break his fucking legs - how godamned disrespectful.-

He retracted that soon after, saying it had been him just not thinking... so it's either that or he realised that a lot of people might just have a few things to say to him. Having said that, if you think about the odds of that happening (i.e. him holding up his stub during the gig AND it being close enough to get blood on it), I'd say they're tiny... I'm guessing he made that up.

Admittedly im not a Pantera fan, one of my mates especially loves them, and would go as far as to say they are her favourite band ever, but i just never got it. And i saw Damageplan and i thought, to be honest, they sucked, BUT this is still sickening. Dimebag WAS a very talented guitarist and i dont think thats in any dispute, for me anyway, but i cant get my head around how any of this can happen, with America's supposed "tightening" of security and over the top gun laws you would think you could make sure that a gig with a capacity of only about 600 people could be organised better than this and make sure one of the "fans" doesnt have a gun hes gonna use inside! Some of you may say thats easier said than done, but come on, i think its pretty fucking important. -

In Toronto, certain clubs with more of a hip-hop bent will perform searches. Clubs with a higher 'white' audience don't. Toronto is pretty safe compared to much of the US but guns still have a part round here, two days ago a teacher was shot in the face in a parking lot of her school. The issue shouldn't be 'Should there be greater searches and/or metal detectors in order to keep clubbers safe?: it should be 'Should there be stricter gun controls and/or a gun ban in order to keep society safe?' Instead, more and more people keep getting blown away and the gun lovers keep multiplying. The usual argument back is that it's illegally registered black market weapons that cause people to carry arms for defence: I personally say that's bollocks. -

R.I.P. darrell lance (dimebag) abbott you will be dearly missed, i am appaled that the gunman got the chance to get a shot in, it was in a nightclub with a very well known band, wtf didnt the security check the entrantes,hmmmmm i am not saying for sure but somehow i belive that it might have been set up, i am a big fan of pantera and damage plan and i am also a huge slipknot fan and not only do i feel deeply sorry for anselmo but i feel sorry for my personal hero corey taylor who was very close friends with dimebag and he was shot dead on coreys birthday, it must be very hard for him, i would also like to say i am angry at the people i have seen on meesagboards on other sites who have been harsh and over the top on comments made about poor dimebag, i wont repeate them cause those people whoever they are dont deserve to get there comments shown on here or any message board on the net, i hope you people are very ashamed in yourselfs and i hope you suffer the same fate and it is a slow painful death and that you are made to live in termoil in hell for the rest of your days, i would also like to thank everyone who has sent there condolences to damageplan and pantera and family and all the other people upset about the shooting, i know its not my place to say thanks but it makes me very happy to see so many people care, and before i go i would also like to say dimebag was a guitarist of pure genuis and he lived and died doing what he loves the most, R.I.P.-

i have done my reseach, there should be security on the back doors, its abvios there will be people trying to get in though that way, eg: fans and so on, there should have been security all over the place for a gig with a band of that stature, you need to get to the real world and see that there is always the possibility that people wil sneak into a gig, many of us have tryed or have done it ourselfs and that they need to make sure that this will not happen, how many more people will be killed before they realise that people like that are at risk at all times and should always be sure that they are safe, i am not trying to start an arguement about this because it not not fare to bring his name in to an arguement, if you wanna talk in more detail about this contact me at bring_it_to_antichrist@hotmail.com
