Seminal breakbeat deviants, Hexstatic are in Manchester tonight with their visceral audiovisual show. Hexstatic collaborated with the original dance floor hooligans Coldcut on the inspirational audiovisual masterpiece, ‘Timber’, and are founders of the neat Ninja Tune label but tonight they are on tour promoting their recent album, Master-View.

The very idea of audiovisual music is that it can only reach its full potential when the music is set to the corresponding image - perhaps why their records fall relatively flat but definitely why there is such a high turnout tonight. Turning the unmistakeable grooves of their experimental breaks and ground-breaking accompanying videos, the duo of Robin Brunson and Stuart Hill play over their curfew to an incredibly appreciative audience, celebrating every twist, pause and euphoric subtlety that might fly their way.

Tonight the AV pioneers should be seasoned, left out on the counter and maybe beginning to rot. But like all the other frontrunners in their field, longevity is the key asset.
