Following on from news that The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster have left Universal / Island Records, the band have released some interesting words to the world at large.

Singer, Guy McKnight says:

“Our band has always been about pushing the boundaries of rock music, and by mutual agreement, both Universal/Island and ourselves feel that their system is not ideal for the nature of our band. We’d like to thank the team at Universal/Island for all the hard work they’ve put in on behalf of the band over the last three years. It’s with some regret but great excitement that we move onwards.”

“We formed The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster when we were teenagers, and three years on I still truly believe in this band with my whole life. We have tried never to compromise our music, and it’s always been a priority for us to strive to be the most exciting live band in the world. The two albums that we’ve recorded so far speak for themselves, particularly The Royal Society. We’ve tried to make them musically unique, exhilarating to listen to, and we look forward to creating the next one, as we’re just getting into our stride!”

“It was amazing to see so many people attend our tour last month and I enjoyed the sold-out Astoria show as much as anything I’ve ever done. We didn’t play as many gigs as we’d have liked this year so we’re doing a couple of Christmas shows.

“The most frustrating aspect of the last year has been us not being able to release our music overseas, so that’s what we’re going to be concentrating on over the next few months. New horizons beckon, so we’re casting off from this Island on The Good Ship Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster to sail, not into the sunset, but further into our voyage of discovery – and we’ll be back soon with something far better than a potato and some fags.”

The band still have two more gigs to play at the end of what has been a, surely, exhausting year.

Make sure you turn up early for the Brighton show and catch all the bands. The the rather fantastic line-up is:

80's Matchbox
The Brakes (BSP/Fish brothers)
The Early Morning Soundtrack (fucking fantastic expansive rock band)
A New Way To Trust (semi-secret show with new drummer , first show since Guitar Wolf support in the Summer)

All the bands were asked to play personally by 80's matchbox, so you know they're good.

"Our band has always been about pushing the boundaries of rock music, and by mutual agreement, both Universal/Island and ourselves feel that their system is not ideal for the nature of our band."

So the label explained to the band that they hadn't sold many records and because of this they no longer wanted to have to deal with them. ??

the reasons for bands leaving/being dropped are always very similar, about pushing boundries, not getting the chance etc. the bands never ever think that it could be their fault. although i do love 80s mb-ld.

Once again, I celebrate as another shit band fades into obscurity.

Eighties Matchbox reveal more on record label split

shut your face you arse, surely you could have some empathy, becuase hifh have been dropped.

The Eighties Matchbox are a grand wee band. Hope they'll get picked up by another label. It's always the case innit, record companies not willing to take RISKS anymore.

80s are amazing, they're bound to be picked up. Labels won't give bands space to grow anymore, funny thing is, I bet that 80s sold more records than U2 did on the same label for their first 2 albums.

...Says the person with funeral for a friend and razorlight as their fave artists. lol

Anyway i hope they can get their next releases overseas as theyr one of the 'great' British bands at the moment who need to be heard by as many ears as possible.
If the split suits them as a band and they can still carry on doing what they do. So be it. Im for it.

Re: Eighties Matchbox reveal more on record label split

I believe in Internet parlance, this is a case of being PWNED.

"...Says the person with funeral for a friend and razorlight as their fave artists. lol"

Seen FFAF live, may as well have gone to see any one of a number of American bands who do what they do better.

EMB-LD are pretty unique, at least based on my limited knowledge of what's out there right now. They're also fun.

Weird but wonderful band. Psychosis Safari was mindblowing in its oddities. Long Live the 80s Matchbox...!

im amazed how this band never really sold records. i know for a fact they were lucky to be kept on after the first album as that didnt sell well either. they have gotta be one of my favourite bands of that last few years. it will be interesting to see which labels go for them, is there a major out there willing to risk it? Surely with the right backing they could piss record sales.

its rather shite island dont seem interested in sending bands overseas unless they sell well over here first. some bands have better markets elswhere.

Re: Eighties Matchbox reveal more on record label

they'll b fine.
they work hard, tour lots and have great songs that fuckin rock
island isnt exactly a hotbed of sonic creativity is it?
i expect many labels to be perking up their ears

Eighties Matchbox are a talented band and thats disappointing to see anybody of their nature to be dropped.

Eighties Matchbox reveal more on record label split

Island are all about Busted and McFly and nothing else any more. Chris Blackwell will be turning in his grave. If he were dead.

Oh, and Keane, who I really don't like. Nothing against them as people - I'm sure podgey little Tom is the life and soul of his fox hunt, but their music is offensively, textbookly (new word, for which I own the copyright) twee.

Eighties Matchbox reveal more on record label split

Eighties Matchbox are a fantastic band. They've done well to get rid of island, and im sure that they'll be picked up pretty sharpish if anybody in the music industry has any sense.
