that probably is THE greatest cover ever, with Hendrix's '..Watchtower' hot on its heels. Other notables are 'Head on' by Pixies & 'Mr Grieves' by TVOTR.

william shatner - common people
i played this when i was DJing at the purple turtle on friday and it REALLY PISSED OFF a chap DJing later, so he went and played the original at the start of his set.
Watchtower gets my vote. Not particularly a big fan of Jimi, but he OWNS this tune.
Corgan's/SP - Landslide. This is the perfect cover song. Billy makes a bold choice and it pays off big time!
Bowie - Pinups, Waterloo Sunset, Kingdom Come, Amsterdam etc. In fact, Bowie covers are always better than the original except his Iggy covers...which invitably are shit for some reason.
Echo & the Bunnymen - Friction, Dylan's Baby Blue (while their versions of Paint It Black and People Are Strange fall short of the originals...and I don't really even like the Doors). Ian's version of Leonard Cohen's Lover Lover Lover is killer, too.
Siouxsie's Helter Skelter is a sonic earthquake!
Belly - Trust in me
Jeremy Smoking Jacket - No-one Knows I'm Gone
Men Diamler - John the Revelator
Mike Flower's Pops - Wonderwall
Suitable Case For Treatment - Will the Circle Be Unbroken?
- all totally tranform the originals and improve on them...
Jimi Hendrix - Watchtower
Final Fantasy - Peach, Plum, Pear
i wasn't asking

Devo - Satisfaction
Everyone who doesn't agree is a fool.
you

I third Devo with 'Satisfaction'
that probably is THE greatest cover ever, with Hendrix's '..Watchtower' hot on its heels. Other notables are 'Head on' by Pixies & 'Mr Grieves' by TVOTR.

that would be incredible...

I think...
Nirvana would contend with....
Nirvana - Man Who Saved the World
Nirvana - Molly's Lips
Nirvana - Son of a Gun
Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah takes some beating.
What about
bands who make their name by covering a classic and passing it off as their own. Blazin Squad with their version of Crossroads was funny. Ha.
I remember having an argument
with my Beatles-hating friend at school over the Vines and he used 'I'm Only Sleeping' as an example of Craig Nicholls' songwriting skills.
"Mr Blue Sky - The Delgados"
i played this when i was DJing at the purple turtle on friday and it REALLY PISSED OFF a chap DJing later, so he went and played the original at the start of his set.

emanuel: iggy pop's, "search & destroy."

Polysics - My Sharona

Anything by....
.....The Moog Cookbook
Hendrix
