well, that was good. The 'head weren't quite as OMG AMAZING as i'd expected unfortunately :( they were pretty damn good, but i only had a couple of moments of stomach-turningness.
i had serious moments of "wont you shut the fuck up i'ma just trying to watch the band" RAGE though, which manifested themselves in a nice left hook at some bloke who shoved into me during "everything in it's right place". Fucking CUNTS talking right through all the songs...grrrrr
Beck was AMAZING though. I think he outdid radiohead by quite a bit. The puppet show was there (as was a puppet tour of edinburgh), there were dancing rapping bears, there was a salad JAM and there was Loser, Black Tambourine, E-Pro, Devil's Haircut and Where It's At. mmmmmm
Deerhoof didn't really suit the venue. They were good, but sounded a bit tinny. However, they pretty much entirely made up for it in cuteness, brilliant dancing and Milking and Milk Man in a row.
All in all, a rather good night. I am absolutely knackered. BED.
Wow.
That sounds great. Beck seems to be a better live act, from what I've seen.
beck
is one of the best live performers going, so i'm not surprised performance wise he out did radiohead. his midnite vultures show at Reading in 2000 remains on of the best things i've evarrrr seen, with costumes, a horn section, a keyboardist dressed as elvis, and it all ended with him dressed as an air traffic controller and covering the stage in "police line" tape which took the crew nearly 20 minutes to remove :D
i really wish i was seeing him at shepherd's bush...
The above-mentioned Reading performance
Yes. One of the best festival sets I've ever seen.
never before then
and never after has beck ever done a tour as good as the midnite vultures one was.
well
the seachange gigs were as much in keeping with the mood of the album as the midnite vultures ones were.
i'd like to see this new one, anyway, i think it could give give the MV dates a whipping. puppet shows!
i doubt it
setlist too heavy with odelay tracks i've heard/seen too many times plus complete wank from his last album. the inclusion of all the odelay hints at desperaton to hold onto his commercial fanbase.
or
it could be a bit of nostalga on his part, as the album is 10 years old now :o)
anyone who has to do
an album nostalgia tour *cough manics* is on their way to the dustbin, just trying to drag back the fans who remember them in younger better days. unless they're iron maiden, in which case its allowed.
i never said a nostalga tour
but a lot of acts plunder albums for live sets around the time it hits 10...
natch
according to wikipedia, there's a 10th anniversary edition of Odelay out this year.
you forget to mention
DJ Swamp playing classic rock riff by scratching records. genius
At times last nite
Radiohead were amazing and i know it's a bit of a cliche and will get be lynched by the snobs amongst you, but their older stuff was unreal. Having said that, their stuff from Kid A onwards sounds much better live, they just played too much of it. The Bends was sorely under represented...at least they finished on Creep. The whole gig was bizarrely early - having rushed from work, i still missed a bit of the Beckmeister. Shame. Still, good warm up for Muse on thursday...(*awaits blood-boiling backlash*)
They don't play much from The Bends because
It. Is. 12. Years. Old.
Besides, they can play what the fuck they like.
There you go.
and. it's. so. overrated.
The. Full. Stop. Thing. Is. Nice. Ain't. It?
i find it hard
to sit through nowadays. the production is very dated and a few of the songs (sulk, bones) are a bit too pablo honeyish for comfort.
but then i do like pablo honey, so i'm obviously talking rubbish. sorry.
Overrated my arse...
...
that must have hurt
I pay their fucking wages...
they'll fucking play whatever i fucking tell them to play. Fuckers. Is there a fucking time threshold after which albums should not be fucking played? 12 years? It's not like they're promoting a new record, lazy fuckers.
Fuck.
yeah
all lazy bastard bands go on tour without anything to promote.
what would you rather - a band playing what they want and feel comfortable and will enjoy playing, or a band sleepwalking through a bunch of crowd pleasers?
no but they've had
four albums since then, all of which are better than the bends, and all of which i'm sure have songs on that they haven't already played 5 million times as no doubt they have all the big hits from the bends.
you don't pay their wages. you pay to be allowed to be in their presence.
...at £27.50 a pop,
I pay their cocking wages...
Saying they've had 4 better albums since the bends is the biggest load of arse i've read on here for at least a day...and you knows it.
To Guntrip, it's not, they're touring constantly and banging out the bends and Ok computer night after night...if that were the case, i'd understand. It's just that the bends especially lends itself to liveness. Arses.
Guntrio...
that should have read: 'it's not like they're constantly touring...' Apologies.
...and that should have read
Guntrip. Jesus...
SIGH
"Saying they've had 4 better albums since the bends is the biggest load of arse i've read on here for at least a day...and you knows it."
wrong wrong wrong!!! The bends is great, but continuing to hail it as their best album is ignoring some of their most beautiful work. I got the most shivers from songs off amnesiac last night. and it probably would have been hail to the thief if i'd known the album better. They are simply much better songs. The new songs they played were all very good too.
The bit after they'd finished Karma Police though, when the crowd sang "for a minute, i lost myself" to get them to come back on. that was ace.
Creep was lacklustre, i wish they'd just finished with everything in it's right place, which was gorgeous.
The Bends sucks
When I saw radiohead it was like ALLLLL electronica stuff and beautiful. And they finished with Idiotheque. And everyone was quiet. And it wasn't outside. i Win.
I'm not saying it's their best album...
but saying the 4 albums post-bends are better is incorrect. I actually prefer Ok computer and granted, some of their most beautiful work has come in recent years, i just don't think the consistancy of the bends and ok computer has been matched. I might be wrong was superb...
Maybe they should have finished on No surprises...
well its
your opinion i guess. lots of us feel that the bends is completely boring, overplayed and overrated in comparison to some of the incredible work they've done since, and i expect the band would agree, and so thats why they play the stuff from them. to be honest most of the kid A and amnesiac stuff i've heard live has been amazing, so its not even like that stuff doesnt work live in the same way as the bends stuff does.
they played half of kid a
at the first night at hammersmith and most of it sounded amazing. idioteque fell a little flat but i think that was due to venue acoustics more than anything.
As i said...
Stuff from Kid A and Amnesiac was much better live than on the record...especially you and whose army...but i just wanted Black Star, that's all. Is that too much to ask? Kharma Police was truly amazing though, complete with impressive crowd singalong which tempted them out for a second encore...
i agree
I'm not of the opinion that the The Bends is boring but I'd rather hear the newer stuff. To continually hold The Bends aloft as being *the* album does a disservice to all their albums since.
Given that the few tracks played off The Bends were murdered by the crowd and played unenthusiastically by the band (relatively speaking) then yep, I'd much rather hear different material.
Don't get me started on Pablo Honey fans either - there's no credit in claiming to be an old school Radiohead fan and I heard a lot of that last night.
I would have given anything for the last line sung not to have been "I don't belong...ah fu.." as Thom lost interest.
to clarify
That reads terribly, but basically Thom pretty much went "ah, fuck it" and gave up singing but he reigned it in and didn't complete the sentence.
People who like early radiohead
are so stuck in the 90s it's hideous.
they all have really dated haircuts too.
Isn't that a bit of a bizarre statement?
I don't have especially strong opinions on Radiohead to be honest but isn't it entirely reasonable, givne they've made very different albums, that someone's preference might be an early one.
Accusign people of being 'dated' for happening to prefer one of their albums to another is just silly.
i was being a bit flippant
but i do think that early Radiohead does sound quite hideously of its time, so one can presume that people who *only* like it tend to be fans of mid-90s music?
hey
i have a dated haircut and hate them in the 90s! hairist!
This is what I posted last night but failed because the internet cut out, still feel it has to be sa
Agreed about Radiohead being a tad underwhelming but Beck is a pretentious wanker with his head up his scientologist arse. Also I saw a girl punching a guy quite late on in the set so it may have been Pretty Vacant, a bit violent don't. Concerning Radiohea I was underwhelmed by their complacency and lack of passion, particularly johnny greenwood who's presence I felt was almost entirely lacking from the stage. I felt they failed to pull of some of my favourite songs like Paranoid Android (mostly the solo), Idioteque (the relentless beat was far too weak) and How To Disapear completely (The Orchestra is what makes the song) I stand by what I said about Beck, a lot of my friends loved it but I think he's a talentless git.
Also,
As far as the Bends goes, though I usually preffer OK Computer Fake Plastic Trees was the best song of the night for me.
Radiohead
were amazing - that's all I have to say really! Just amazing!
Well worth the million quid they were paid.
you PUNCHED someone?
i hope it was a big fat man.
what happened? did he cry? are you ok?
she's gone to see A Scanner Darkly *jealous*
And she sounded fine.
Peevee can be scary sometimes
I went
It was really quite amazing I thought. I agree, not as much as I thought, but it still outdid everyone by quite a long way. By the end of it I couldent stand up. I felt completely empty like after listening to a great album, but for ages.
This morning I could hardly get up. I feel drained in every way possible, and more too.
Weird how they stopped halfway through a song to tell a guy off for moshing. Cool.
The crowd werent very good, but in my head, for a minute there, i lost myself. I lost myseeeeeelf (fade out, though really)
And beck were entertaining. The video was great, and the whole table thing and bear suits were really fun.
Cool
