but i was only there for a few hours (in a crazed cross-country dash to try and find a truck ticket) and it was term time, so the place was full of intimidating looking students.
it was a bit posh for me, but i'm scruffy and northern so these things tend to make me uncomfortable.
It's just millions of assorted exotic anthropological items pinched by victorians and cramped into a fairly small museum without worrying much about how to classify it all. I dread to think what the Anthropology PhDs think.
oh it is actually classified quite systematically.
Basically lots of things from different places that are kind of similar are put together, like a case full of pots, or a case full of statues. It links in with 19th century ideas about social evolution which I cannot detail now because I have to go and see a play about Richard Nixon.
Its all about the shrunken heads and the witch in a bottle.
you are probably in oxford on two of the worst days, however when the 'best' days are i dont really know. if you were there a week later (monday 1st) then you would be in time for my housewarming party. foals are playing in the basement.
instead go to a pub called the star and drink lots of rum in the garden.
...
- Get an education.
- Stare in wonderment at the surfeit of tall people.
...
tall people huh?
right, i'll stay clear of them;)
any gigs?
foals are playing on friday
they're well good. but that's of no use to you whatsoever either.
i think i'm going to leave this thread alone now.
ps- there doesn't appear to be much else on over the weekend.
NO! WAIT!
sunday 27th august
port mahon, oxford
WAIT FOR CONISTON
A jagged but delicate dose of art rock in its most distilled form.
BUGBRAND
Gorgeous drones, crunching beats and and home-made instruments are our three favourite things, and Bugbrand delivers them all at once with love.
GRUDLE BAY RIOTS
Wonderful electro goodness from the people who brought you P.Y.E.
5pm start.
8pm finish.
that looks alright, no?
...
alas no foal action for me:( rather it's south sheilds that calls this friday eve for family wedding (oh-joy!)
the above does sound interesting though, and has been noted.
thanking you kind sir/kind peoples for suggestions:)
My friend told me it was like Hogwarts, but I have yet to go
so all in all not very useful.
when i went it scared me a little bit

i'm sure this hasn't helped at all.
Go punting on the Cherwell
If it doesn't rain, that is. You can do punting until the start of October...
Have a drink at the Turf (it's hard to find. Go to Hertford college and find the little alleyway by the bridge)
Go to the Covered Market
Go up towards Jericho, see something at the Phoenix, sit in one of the rather nice pubs / bars on walton street
Sit in christchurch meadows and have a picnic
Look for rude gargoyles
Pitt Rivers museum
In the back of the University Museum in Parks Road.
Help yourself to a nice steaming cup of exoticism. You will come out a Victorian.
Ah yes
That place is great :)

It is? Can't say I noticed!
But then, I was mainly just gawping at the random stuff, to be honest. Not terribly academic eh.
The shrunken heads are one of the best things, for sure!
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THAT PLACE :)
saturday is where its at!
Get there a day early to see Jeremy Warmsley, Francois and loads more at an all dayer at the Port Mahon!
Alternatively Wait For Coniston on the sunday will be rather amazing too!
when me and t'pig went
there were lots of people running around in multi coloured robes. Just like hogwarts, jasmine. It was quite exciting.
oxford is a great city
for indie music
I don't know waht is on this weekend (because I no longer live that way) but there's bound to be somehting great.
