Support came in the form of elementary 3-piece post-rock noise, with melancholy vocals to match. The inexplicably-named Supercoolwater followed with some catchy alterna-punk guitar thrashing in the vein of Daydream Nation era Sonic Youth - the set started and ended well, but became a little turgid in the middle.
Despite being currently unsigned, Billy Mahonie (not a bloke but a band, for those wondering) played a strong varied set which demonstrated that they're still one of the most innovative and lively bands around. The style as always is hard to categorise - post-rock, indie, punk, jazz, lo-fi... instrumental songs, and as with all good instrumental bands they made vocals seem unnecessary. The songs varied - sharp bursts of irregular rhymthic attack, indie-rock jamming with an echoing trumpet adding extra layers to the powerful guitar work, and classic post-rock guitar songs that build up from quiet beginnings with all the intense power of Mogwai or David Pajo at their best.
We welcome any new material, and look forward to a new record deal (someone sign them, now!) and hopefully a new album.
