In that it's the same as a normal one but it's red.

Fine then!
I have no other tips. My friend had a crap time with the student barclays account when he hit overdraft though. He was hounded. Like a dog. That was probably his own fault though.
do the rail card now 5 years free which can't be bad really.
I had/have a hsbc one since they offered the rail card previously and offered an ace deal on overdrafts, I don't forsee a time when I might need a £1,750 interest free overdraft but I have the ability.
you can always swap to a different bank if you need more overdraft though so go with Natwest.
i've got a natwest one. but don't forget to activate the overdraft...i haven't yet. Its also good because you get a free student railcard that entitles you to one third off rail fares...its quite useful really
Overdrafts are retarded. You think you're going to pay it off by the time you graduate? You're not. You think you're going to pay it off when they upgrade you to a graduate account with £5000 overdraft? You're not. You think your 4 years worth of 1/3 off train travel is going to be any consolation for the abject despair you're going to feel when you realise your bank owns you and all you have to show for it is a couple of hundred chucked up kebabs? It's not.
Don't have interest because Islam frowns upon interest or something, or at least in the classic sense, I don't really understand. I expect it works some other way.
(although saysing that makes me sound a bit boring doesn't it?)
It's a useful safety net but it's important to remember it's not free money and, if you don't keep a track on it, you'll get a letter from your bank about 2 years after you graduate to suddenly tell you you're about to start paying interest on all that money!
I banked with Barclays but, to be honest, that was just 'cos I was already with them and they had a branch in my Uni. What they offered was decent enough compared to everyone else but this was back in 2000 so it's difficult to know what it's like now. Plus they have a tendency to do something really annoying on a regular basis.
But then they do make up for it for having really nice bank managers. The two times I've had a problem with my account (when someone cloned my card and withdrew £1, 200 of money I didn't actully have and when I urgently needed to transfer some money for my rent) they were fantastic about it.
And unless you know someone does then it's best to go with either whichever bank's most conveniently located or whoever offers the freebie you fancy the most!
railcards, is it true that they actually dont count for long journeys. So from Norwich to Newport, wales it wouldnt be any use?? My friend said he gets something stupid like 50p off from Norwich to Bristol because its such a long journey. This does seem a little unfair.
because i thought they cant be THAT bad, do you know what!!! I think the shit head lied to me to make me travel with him on the plane which he prefers. Blah!!
Thanks guys, for letting moi know.
So you recon this one is better value to me then the 10 cd's one? Kinda just is isnt it really. They say this rail card last for 5 years aswell! oooo!
thankyou. I think i will go for the rail card. and i think it is called a young persons railcard. Like yours. Its strange when your shopping around for a student bank account and you're basing it on the freebies, lol.
I'm not a student but I am a "young person" and technically I can get the account which offers the free railcard thingy, but it seems I have to prove I'm going to university or something?
so £100. But I think I can actually get the account and just not the railcard. I'm 19, the minimum wage is less for me and seeing as I'm working and not a student I might actually be able to pay it back. Damn them.
Go for the freebies!
HSBC might still give you a student railcard which is dead useful. They extend your overdraft by £250 every year too starting from £1000.
pah
I have a railcard!
I have a RAiLCARD
number 6
*smug*
This is a special red one!
In that it's the same as a normal one but it's red.

five year long one?
natwest

Barclays were alright.
I got about £70 of HMV vouchers and the overdraft is the same old £1000 in the first year and extendable by £250 each year after that.
yeah
i've got a natwest one. but don't forget to activate the overdraft...i haven't yet. Its also good because you get a free student railcard that entitles you to one third off rail fares...its quite useful really
I think natwest and hsbc are both the same
5 year railcard, ever increasing overdraft.
They're mostly all ok for customer support. I had no troubel with Natwest really.
Stick to Natwest
I've never had any trouble with them.

Stealthy, i think that's possibly the funniest post i have ever read!
*hands over some kind of trophy*
Islamic bank accounts
Don't have interest because Islam frowns upon interest or something, or at least in the classic sense, I don't really understand. I expect it works some other way.
it looked exactly the same on the website
oah!
Well
I could be wrong, I'm neither a Muslim nor a bank employee.
:)
go for the co-op bank
think slightly more ethical investments from your banking.
plus you get a high overdraft (although means more to pay back at the end) of up to £2000
plus they have the loveliest staff
(i don't work for them. its just everytime i've had a problem they've sorted it pronto)
It is worth being careful on the overdraft
(although saysing that makes me sound a bit boring doesn't it?)

oh, you old man :)
to demonstate my complete lack of understanding of money, I read £1, not £1,200.
This is why I need help!
I know nothing about money either...
And unless you know someone does then it's best to go with either whichever bank's most conveniently located or whoever offers the freebie you fancy the most!
about them wee
railcards, is it true that they actually dont count for long journeys. So from Norwich to Newport, wales it wouldnt be any use?? My friend said he gets something stupid like 50p off from Norwich to Bristol because its such a long journey. This does seem a little unfair.
Peg x
no, that's not true
I always save a reasonable amount.
If it's the same as the young person's railcard
I save loads on journeys from London to Bristol so I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
PS See, ladyoftheflowers, I still qualify for a YOUNG person's railcard so I can't be that old!!!
yes, but it's your atitude that makes you old!
Grrr...
It's suddenly being told I had to pay back the grand I owed the bank or pay interest on it that gave me my attitude!
PS I prefer the term 'wise'!
I was gonna say "I prefer the term 'experienced'" but that would probably be read the wrong way.
And misleading. ;(
oh sweetie :p
:D
Ahhh right...
because i thought they cant be THAT bad, do you know what!!! I think the shit head lied to me to make me travel with him on the plane which he prefers. Blah!!

So you recon this one is better value to me then the 10 cd's one? Kinda just is isnt it really. They say this rail card last for 5 years aswell! oooo!
If it is a young person's railcard it's definitely less value
but potentially less fun.
"Less value"?
I meant "better value".
okey doke
thankyou. I think i will go for the rail card. and i think it is called a young persons railcard. Like yours. Its strange when your shopping around for a student bank account and you're basing it on the freebies, lol.
Yeah but...
...that's just 'cos we're all too ignorant about money to base it on anything else!
And...
all the overdrafts are about the same so frankly after the freebies it's all the same whoever you go with.
As long as you don't go for the bank run by the bloke carrying a bag with SWAG written on it.
What I don't understand is
I'm not a student but I am a "young person" and technically I can get the account which offers the free railcard thingy, but it seems I have to prove I'm going to university or something?
I think it's 'cos it's specifically a student account.
You can buy a young persons' railcard from any trainstation. Forgotten exactly how much it is but I know I definitely save a fair bit.
£20 a year
so £100. But I think I can actually get the account and just not the railcard. I'm 19, the minimum wage is less for me and seeing as I'm working and not a student I might actually be able to pay it back. Damn them.
