Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

My Bloody Valentine. I wish i'd seen them :(

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Discharge - anything by them.............

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

I went to see some band called hopesfall and they were in turn supported by another totally horrid band called Nora I think they might possibly be the loudest most horridest band i've ever seen/heard, has anyone ever heard of them Oh yeah i obviously told the band afterwards how much i like them.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Lake Of Dracula, Boredoms or Part Chimp

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

i second partchimp

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Hopesfall!

I'd forgotten they existed.

The loudest horridest sounding gig i've been to was.. (i dont think many will agree with me on the horridness)... Oceansize.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

The Valentines Holocaust section (the noise part of You Made Me Realise) averaged about 10-15 minutes...it kind of crept up on you without you realising how much they were pushing the dials. I think they only did the 40 minutes llength in the US once but everytime it felt like a lifetime.

The whole depate is totally dependent on venue size etc...but for my money some of the most powerful bands, in volume, were The God Machine, Bardo Pond (supporting Mogwai at the Astoria...dull but fuck were they loud), Dinosaur Jr, Ministry, AC/DC and Wire. I guess Pansonic and Mercury Rev are in there too.

Top of the list though must be Mogwai when they played Brixton. It was louder than MBV with people sprawled on the floor at the sides. Kevin Shields congrutalated them afterwards for their loudness.

I always think Part Chimp are louder than they actually are. Must be the bass frequencies. Still fucking loud. But feel Ligamant hit the treble pain level more so, along with Prolapse and probably th' Faith Healers.

"Top of the list though must be Mogwai when they played Brixton. It was louder than MBV with people sprawled on the floor at the sides. Kevin Shields congrutalated them afterwards for their loudness."

i SECOND THAT Majorleague! I couldn't speak for 25 minutes afterwards. Felt like Alex in Clockwork Orange after the brainwashing.

part chimp definitely win points for loudness

prolapse! i hate you :( i hate you :( i hate you :( i'd give sore sums of money to have seen prolapse at their best. sob. whimper. choke.

only seen bardo pond once, i can concur with the dullness point but they didn't seem all that loud. that said, they weren't supporting/competing with mogwai.

mogwai are generally pretty loud when i've seen them. lightning bolt were fairly loud, though less so than i expected. wolf eyes the first time i saw them. pelican & mono disappointed me on the loudness front [and indeed on the goodness front - two bands i like lots on record, but not live - pelican HAVE been good live - not lately though]. minus are pretty damn loud. dj speedranch! he's BLOODY loud.

Bardo Pond

Saw them at ATP last year, bored me rigid! They weren't noticably loud though.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Amen, brother.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Spinal Tap-They go all the way up to 11

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

its manowar, theyre in the guinness book for it.
but anyway, the loudest band i ever saw was mogwai, i got worried when my ears were still ringing 4 days later. icarus line come a close second.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

You're right about Manowar (132 decibels!) About the equivalent of sticking your head inside a jet engine at full power.

The Blood Brothers gig I saw really was insane though -took a whole 7 days for the ringing to stop. I'm still amazed it did!

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

ORANTGE AND BLUE STARFISH FRATERNITY BLUES BAND SHITE

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Keane. Tom Chaplin makes Lemmy look like a 108 yr old pensioner with incontinence.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Isis....Loud. As. Fuck

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Part Chimp are LOUD! Same goes for Pelican and Mogwai. Considering what I'd heard about Explosions (and despite their complete and utter brilliance) they haven't been that loud either of the times I've seen them. Didn't think Isis were especially loud either.

On reputation though (and having heard live mp3s) I'd have to say My Bloody Valentine. They used to turn their monitors to face the audience and there would be people throwing up in the front row due to the noise. And I've heard the song that descended into 40 minutes of feedback.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

yeah gotta agree with pelican like

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Ah, MBV's live reputation...sadly before my time. I can't remember what song they used to make 40 minutes long though...I think it was one off 'Isn't Anything'. Don't hold me to that though.

Out of bands I've seen...one of four:
Oceansize, Explosions In The Sky, Muse, or Mono.

A tough choice. EITS were fucking loud as..well...fuck so I will, for now, go with them.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

One of the times I went to see My Bloody Valentine they turned the 40sec noise bit in the middle of "You Made Me Realise" into what felt like 40mins of hell. I've no idea how long it actually was though. Don't know if that is the track you are thinking of.
It just ended up really pissing me off. It meant that a huge chunk of their set was taken up by something that was actually painful to listen to... even with earplugs!
AND it probably fucked up my ears permanently (so don't be too sad that it was before your time!)

The nearest I have come to thinking I was going to throw up because my insides were vibrating so much was at (bizarrely) a Eugenius gig in Greenock, when they were still Captain America. Though I think this probably had more to do with someone hiring far too powerful a PA for such a small venue, rather than there being any intent by the band… so I don’t know if this counts.

I think My Bloody Valentine should get my vote for their consistency - several days of tinitus after each gig was part of the package.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Yeah....that's the one I meant! And to think some journos compare Snow Patrol to MBV.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Surprisingly, Mogwai are the loudest band I've seen.
I don't get ringing ears after most gigs but it took 2 days for my ears to get back to normal

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Deftones.

The tracks from the 'Deftones' album are just plain loud!!!!!

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Yeah, 'You Made Me Realise' is definitely the one they used to turn into a 40-minute noise-trip.

Who the hell compares Snow Patrol to MBV? Surely they'd need to be deaf.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

MBV - Cardiff Rollercoaster tour 1992 - I actually started to get scared during You Made me Realise and saw some girls crying next to me. apparently that night the 'chord from hell' was one of their shortest versions on the tour - ah.

Mogwai in 99 - also very very brilliantly loud

Quietest band? the band January at Death Disco (when it was called Radio 4) so quiet that the singer heard me slagging them off and when he said 'thanks for those who DID listen' he looked directly at me with a death stare and then the audience gave me dirtys too - whoops

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Journalists who think that Coldplay saved music.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

I think officially its man-o-war at a concert in NYC, before them it was the who, its the like official record

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

haha, o man my sides are hurting,

"this guitar is known for its sustain just listin to that sustain"
"I dont hear anything"
"Thats cause im not playing it but imagine if i was just imagine the sustain"

o man spinal tap, that was a hillarious movie

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Doves - Brixton academy Dec 02

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

doves? loudest band ever? most whiney crap indie band ever maybe

truly loud and truly fucking brilliant - The Hunches

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Loudest band? Redjetson were quite loud tonight.

Um, Melt Banana or the Boredoms.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Hardly mate! Heard Paper Cuts? They are loud

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

No, you're all wrong, the loudest band EVER are Simply Red.

Loudest band

not lousiest!

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Paper Cuts were no challenge to the title when I saw them support Instruction. They fucking rocked, but no way are they louder than Mono, EITS, Oceansize, etc.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Never saw MBV and their legendary 'Death#' chord; but I can't believe there's ever been a band louder than Atari Teenage Riot. Saw them at Cambridge Junction, October '99, and was subjected to 2 1/2 hours of mind-splitting noise. The support band (Lolita Storm) and the between-band music (ATR frontman Alec Empire's somewhat illegal but engagingly enthusiastic total annihilation of Elvis Presley's back catalogue) were as loud as ATR, making it impossible to talk, think, or breathe. Every single Junction employee had been ordered to wear earplugs, including the bouncers outside. Marvellous.

It was also my first date with a new girlfriend. She liked Cradle of Filth. She wasn't my girlfriend for long.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

atari teenage riot for a first date?
you old romantic.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Got to 2nd the vote for ATR. Saw them at Reading a few years back and they managed to wake me up from a drunken stupor. They actually managed to wake most of the field I was in and I was a long way from the stage. Managed to make to the arena for most of the show, truly amazing.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

YES YES YES.
And you will be able to hear for yourself Englishmen... end of September. Oh yes.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Actually, mr. soundcheck has a point. I had those damn "wheeee" noises in my ears for about three days. Bloody good gig.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Ten Benson

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Dinosaur Jr in Cardiff 1993 (start Chopping era..)
They were so loud the songs were all but unrecognizable then about 40 minutes into the set they blew the power- all the lights went off- the amps cut out and all we could hear was Murph still drumming as he took a couple of seconds to come back to reality..
The band left the stage- half the audience left and about half an hour later they came back- with the house lights on as the lighting rig seemed to have had it! they played Freak Scene, Start Chopping etc. and suddenly sounded great- if a little quieter...
I missed MBV but they always had the reputation at the time- I know people that had to sit them out in the foyer as You made me realize was just too painful!

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

After Part Chimp I had tinnitus for a week afterwards.
Close second are Six by Seven, who always really fucking make my ears ring.

Honorable mentions to Wolves! Of Greece and Hey Colossus as well.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Thank god I'm not the only one whose had tinnitus for a week after a gig! The Blood brothers are sure to be ingrained on my mind, and cochleae, forever more.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Oh yeah, I forgot about Wolves! Of Greece. I think they may have been a whisker louder than the Locust, mainly 'cos they were in smaller venues both time I saw them.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

bardo pond!!! though the mogwai at brixton was utterly noismazing x

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

The Locust. My ears tingle just thinking about it.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Merzbow, Disobey Club, Upstairs at The Garage, sometime in the mid-90s. Very loud indeed.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Girls ALOUD.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

blood bros?
what the fuck?
practically EVERYONE apart from kings of convenience is louder than bbs.

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

You must be kidding.

Well I'm no expert on cochlea liquidisation so you're probably right. If that comes from personal experience, I hope you have some decent earplugs!

Re: The Loudest Band on Earth

Having been too young and foolish to ever see MBV before they died, the loudest gigs I remember were Flying Saucer Attack at the Electric Ballroom, circa 1996, we were standing in front of whatsisface's guitar amp and I couldn't walk in a straight line for about 3 days afterwards, not to mention the crippling nausea. Also Dinosaur Jr in the Junction in Cambridge in about 1997. J Mascis had 9 amps on stage and again we were rather foolishly standing directly in front of them.

Part Chimp are always a good bet though, as are Wolves and Fixit Kid, if you're talking about current bands. I believe there's a review on this site of Part Chimp and Fixit Kid playing together at Silver Rocket. A lot of people had their hands over their ears for that one. Not because they were shite, I'd like to point out, but both bands appeared to be trying to blow the roof off the venue.

I'd rather cut off my own ears than sit through an hour and a half of a mogwai gig so I can't comment on their volume. Mogwai supporting Ligament at their last ever show was the silliest support slot I've seen! Luckily Ihad a book.

One time the manager of the Garage came upstairs and bellowed "this is intolerably loud" at us (you have to imagine it in a Dutch accent), hands over her ears. We were only playing records, but we had to turn it down a bit, at least until she went.

Part Chimp

wolf eyes

i remember the first time i saw them at atp(first nightmare i think)600 people with fingers in ears
otherwise swans at liverpool planet x.50k rig in a tiny tiny venue.made me projectile vomit along with many others

funnily enough...

...gallows actually hold the record for loudest band now.

http://www2.kerrang.com/2007/06/gallows_become_the_worlds_loud.html

no joke. to think lags used to be in my dad joe!

god

those comments are amazing.

Kids today!

"U AN IDOT THER BETTER THAN THE GALLOWS I ALSO LIKE MCR BUT UR AN IDOT HAVE U HERED MCRS FIRST ALBUM ITS ALOT LIKE THE GALLOWS IN PLACES BUT I BET YOUR JUST ON OF THOSE FOLOW ALONG POPPOLE WHO ONAY LIKE MCR BECASE THEY THINK THERE COOL BUT THEY DONT CARE WEVER THEY LIKE IT THEY JUST PRETEND [X]X[X]"

Who does their PR?

They've done a great job

Regardless

Manowar are still officially the loudest band on planet earth.

I think

I might be beginning to hate Gallows more than any other band ever.

Overreaction?

Melvins

With 2 drummers!

A measure of loudness isn't how long your ears are ringing for. That just shows that the soundsystem at the venue wasn't up to it and was distorting like hell. You can have LOUD through a decent PA and have next to no ear ringing.

What about Converge?

When I saw them at Brighton they were so utterly inconceivably loud that I got tinnitus for two days despite my earplugs. Concubine live is simply ridiculous- because everyone's just hitting their instruments as LOUD AS FUCKING POSSIBLE.

seen melvins a few times

and don't remember them being that loud (volume wise) - they are loud in general though for sure :)

(nearly broke my back seeing them in yoof while crowd surfing even.. was last time I did it in fact - haha)

loudest band i've ever seen

is actually some shite oasis wannabes playing at turnmills. they had their amps turned up ridiculously loud even though there were precisely 6 people in the audience

The Bronx

Seem To Remember

Killing Joke being very loud live.

CTRL+F 'Sunn 0)))'

oh dear. YOuve had since 2004 to mention THAT DiS

Several people told me Swans

DJ Speedranch had the most sickening bass rumble I ever heard.

Three years on..

and no band I've seen has come close to the loudness of the Blood Brothers. I really should see Part Chimp sometime to gain some perspective.

leftfield

.. people were being sick the bass was so loud

MOGWAI

are most likely the most consistenly loud band i've ever seen... only time my ears were not ringing after was at ATP in the main stage (the big tent).
