Cliques And The Future Of Music

Does anyone else feel bands like The Libertines, The Others and the rest of the Rhythm Factory scene are becoming a bit of a clique phenomenon?

There is this big "for the fans" philosophy, but on some levels it doesn't seem to work. It's hard to explain but I feel as though the die-hard, obsessive, "we go back to the singer's flat" fans shut out anybody who's trying to get into the music. It's hard to put into words, but there is something about the attitude of these bands which doesn't make me feel entirely comfortable. I like the music, just the attitude to me feels the opposite of inclusive.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Its the old "I discovered them. They are my band not yours" effect methinks

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

whereabouts near leeds are you from?

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Little posh town called Ilkley. I'm the stereotypical middle-class indie boy. Sorry :(.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

i'm with you on that. You're spot on.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Definitely, when i'm out in certain places in Southend (Essex) with mates it's very like that with bands that are shite... and half the time they're into The Libertines, Jet - bands I feel can be within the 'clique phenomenon'. People like that seem to think that they're artistic and different when they're just conforming to an ideal fed to them through, i dunno - fashion, music and other media... this is why NME piss me off...

The bottom line is that when I get into a band that these type of people are into, they want to shut out me and others because they 'were the first' or 'i saw them when they just started', whatever...

Sometimes I think it's a fine line between an actually cool person and a 'clique' induced person. It's an attitude thing I suppose...

I dunno, i'm fuckin stoned and trying to remember the subject is proving quite difficult. I hope this makes sense cos it's a long post an' that.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Exactly. People get so elitist cos they know the band or whatever, in the end though it seems rather like groupie-ism. The thing is, it's very hard to explain the line between a closed club and a cool scene.

And in the same way, people are often told they can't like something because it's not "in", and doesn't fit with the rest of their music taste, and well, i suppose it's always been happening, just with all this parties in flats and guerilla gigging it all seems particularly exclusive.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

And thinking about it what's been happening with Mr Pete Doherty (who at first i felt sympathy for, but am now sick of) is that same thing. Doesn't turn up for gigs even though he's for the people, and then plays for his groupie fan club in his flat...

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

I just read that article in the NME.. :). Anyway. I know the feeling of liking something that isn't in. I get quite a bit of shit for it actually. Thing is, Jet and the like aren't exactly exclusive anymore because everyone... mum, dad, son, daughter seems to love them. And yes, Mr. Doherty has turned into quite a sour and selfish man .

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Tis true, tis true...

It was a similar situation when Hope Of The States (who, incidentally, were complete and utter shite...they owe me 45 minutes of my life) played Reading last year. All the girls down the front who had to make sure that EVERYONE in the venue knew that they were friends with the band. Well done ladies....what a great achievement. Now shut up and watch the fucking show. Man, I hate people.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

it'll be over by christmas to borrow a phrase - of course its a clique mentality and its nothing new to the clammy corners of London where these cliques reside for a few years and then grow up/die - if the music is shit then i see now reason to feel like yr missing our on anything

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Hasn't Ilkley got a huge fucking moor and aliens with a predilection for nabbing coppers? Fair play, not even Valhalla.. ahem, London has that.

Is Wales still fashionable now or has all attention swerved over to the Micronesian ragga scene?

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Yes it has got a moor, Wuthering Heights style. It also has aliens.

It also has a lot of middle-class southerns living in cheap, big houses (me), and old people.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Wales is always fashionable

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

All the fookin' time. With all the yobs and old people it's well good. Trisha this morning is a perfect example of how cool Wales is

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

On Ilkley moor bar t'at

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

Places round Leigh... sunrooms is ok, the range of music in sunrooms saves it. proper stoner place. i can handle that.

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

If they still do them, the spanked monkey in the scumrooms is sublime

Re: Cliques And The Future Of Music

They have scales in fornt of some clubs in hoxton and shoreditch and if you weigh over the suggested weight - ie 6 stone - they stab you with shards from old toyah records whilst sucking in their cheeks like a nightmare featuring Gerald scarfe caricatures
