Hands up if you hate Athlete?

Its almost become a ritual standing joke amongst the cogniscenti of the indie-than-thou elite to pour scorn on the Deptford four piece. And yet up to now (but more of that later), I have always failed to see the point.

Sure their music isn't gonna inspire 15-year-old spotty boys to hastle their mum and dad for a 'V' shaped stratocaster next Christmas, and its not going to inspire stagediving on a level that would put those 853 people to shame. But then, when did Athlete ever promise such things in the first place?

For all the people who supposedly found their first record 'Vehicles And Animals' dull and uninspiring, it sure as hell shifted enough units to warrant making a follow up - about 300,000 and rising at the last count.

For those of us who actually found 'Vehicles...' quite appealing, Athlete represented a band who hadn't quite found their niche yet the early signs suggested that here was a band who exhumed a similar resonant blend of quirkiness to that of The Beta Band, and that if their second record was half as good as it's predecessor then their elevation to the dizzy heights enjoyed by oddball luminaries such as Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips could be just around the corner.

Sadly, 'Tourist' is only half the album that 'Vehicles...' hinted at, and that is where the problem lies.

One accusation that has always dogged Athlete right from their humble beginnings three years ago - and probably had as much to do with the fact they share the same record label as anything else - is that their music sometimes sounds in danger of being Coldplay-lite, in that occasionally they can be guilty of one forlorn heartfelt ballad too many a la Keane, Dido and Melua. In other words, not good.

And that is the main problem with 'Tourist'. Athlete seem to have found a formula in the studio and left the autopliot in reverse, as the building piano introduction and protacted vocal pronunciations abound throughout 'Chances', 'Trading Air', 'I Love' and 'Street Map' make it difficult to actually tell the four songs apart after half a dozen listens.

When Athlete veer away from any trodden path, such as on current single 'Wires' or the call-to-arms stand-off of 'Modern Mafia', they sound like a band who clearly want to escape from the wrought iron bubble they find themselves in yet the head of marketing at Parlophone records won't give them the keys.

When Joel Pott sings "It's time to tell you honestly, so we can alter history" on the laconic 'Yesterday Threw Everything At Me' - by far the nearest Athlete get to the reverent collage of 'Vehicles And Animals' on here - it serves as a reminder that this band still has it in them to be special, to be relevant, and even dare I say it, pioneering.

It's just a shame then that 'Tourist' isn't the record to accentuate Athlete to a high level of acclaim just yet, but at the same time, it isn't the gut-wrenching, stomach churner that would put people off for life either.

I'm indifferent to Athlete, but I can see what's coming, and so I proclaim...

    "LET THE FLAMING BEGIN!"
    • Re: Athlete - Tourist

got the album, in a word, rubbish or should I say Coldplay?
    • Athlete - Tourist

I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the five or six tracks I've heard from the album. I liked Vehicles and Animals, I found them fun live, the sort of fun where you don't go expecting to be blown away every time (lets face it, precious few bands do), and they were good. That was just before V&A was released, though. I'm not taken with this too much, it seems to have taken the cheery summery indie-pop of stuff like You Got The Style, Westside and El Salvador, and replaced it with sappier stuff than the otherwise marvellous Beautiful. After their first album, a few people refered to them as the Deptford Steely Dan. But I just don't buy it with this album now, it's too sappy and Pott isn't a good enough lyricist to make the album work as an emotional journey (witness him blabbering on about corridors on lead single Wires). So, sorry Athlete. Sophomore slump indeed.

i liked their first album, i didnt find it "dull and uninspiring" at all.

but their latest single seems dull and uninspiring to me, and if their album is any more of that i might just die of boredom listening to it.

I really like wires, but this review has put me off buying this though. i shall have to hear more.
    • Athlete - Tourist

Vehicles and Animals rocked my socks in a gentle, chilled out way.
If this album is as bad as the review says, I shall be a sad, sad man. And Wires didn't seem promising, sure it was very good... but no El Salvador, or Westside, or Beautiful, or You Got The Style, or Out Of Nowhere for that matter.
    • Athlete - Tourist

Why bother reviewing such a palpably shit band?
      • Re: Athlete - Tourist

        ah, the morons have landed.
        • Athlete - Tourist

does anyone else think the singer sounds really simple in the way he sings? And (as an afterthought), they sound like coldplay but not as good...
          • Re: Athlete - Tourist

            fuck off
            • Re: Athlete - Tourist

I know what you mean by that.

I fall on the 'liking them' side of the fence, although I haven't heard the new album yet.
            • Athlete - Tourist

Its simplicity and subtleties are what makes Athlete so popular to people. They will always be more popular than stuff like Bright Eyes in the UK.

This record has some truly nice touches - especially when they play to their strengths (the synths and beat fx).
              • Re: Athlete - Tourist

Like it or loath it, I personally think that this album is going to make Athlete HUGE in this country this year... I may be proved wrong, but it's not a bad album. Not great, but you can see that it might just take them snow patrol popular...

The thing is though, that compared to 'Vehicles & Animals', which at least tried to break boundaries and take chances, 'Tourist' just plays safe in the land of Chaplin & Martin that was built for accountants, car salesmen and secretaries the land over.
                  • Re: Athlete - Tourist

                    ah, vindication
                  • Athlete - Tourist

Not heard the first album but think Wires is a really nice song.Nothing earth shattering, just good enough for background music.

will be interested to hear more, based on this very good review.
                  • Re: Athlete - Tourist

Just what is it with the music taste pigeonholing and stereotyping? It's so lazy!

And maybe the accountants etc will buy Tourist, then check out Athlete's first album and broaden their music horizons a bit by checking out a few other bands.
                    • Re: Athlete - Tourist

I can see it too. Everyone - stop saying you like Athlete otherwise you're going to start getting all kinds of abuse from the taste police. Someone will probably start a '3 things I'd like to do to Athlete' thread soon as well.
                    • Re: Athlete - Tourist

You're only saying that because you are a middle manager with a job title like Production Control Assistant though, go on, admit it
                  • Re: Athlete - Tourist

If you listen - properly - to this record, it really isn't just another bland, straight as fuck Coldplay clone. There's so much depth to it: the space, the fantastic arrangements of synths and the quirky little moments that are Athlete's trademarks. They were always destined to be Coldplay-massive in this country and this record will put them there.
            • Athlete - Tourist

first one was ok, should i buy this one or not???? that is the question.
