The Microphones

their album 'The Glow, Part 2' is having the same effect on me that Neutral Milk Hotel's 'Aeroplane' had on me when I first heard that. That is;

1: wow
2: why haven't I heard this before.
3: WOW

  • :)))))

  • this happened to me

a couple of weeks ago. lastfm played me a microphones song (samurai sword) and it was the first time i've been really excited about something i'd heard for AGES.

i went through stages one to three. and then 4. why can't i afford to actually buy the album? soon though, soon.

  • You really need to hear No Flashlight and Seven New Songs.

I love Phil Elvrum far too much.

His folder in my music is 986MB.

    Word.

  • The Glow Pt.2

is AMAZING. Easily in my top 5 of the decade so far. However, everything else I've heard of his seems to be nowhere as good. The Mount Eerie album is possibly the most pretentious thing I've ever heard, the No Flashlight songs I've heard seem a bit pointless and the first album just copies (and covers) Eric's Trip quite well, but I'd rather listen to them. I was really looking forward to seeing him at ATP and even that was a complete disappointment.

Oh well, maybe I just don't get it.

    • oops

I just realised It Was Hot.. isn't the first album but the third. Sorry.

    • i've got

it was hot, we stayed in the water. it's pretty damn decent. i shall have to purchase some more alvums soon.

i believe that phil elvrum is the drummer for old time relijun', who ARE fucking good.

    • interesting

I have 'it was hot...' and it's seriously one of the lamest albums I own. It just doesn't click with me.

It made me too scared to check out The Glow Pt.2.

Might seek it out after reading your thoughts though.

  • That's weird

i was just listening to them for the first time on Epitonic. I agree it's pretty damn good, interesting stuff

    • Phil Phil Phil

I really like all of the Microphones stuff. They're all great, but I think the last two albums recorded under the Microphones moniker, the Glow Pt. 2 and Mt. Eerie, are bonafied classics. However, most of what Phil Elverum has done since then I've found to be kind of boring.
In fact, when he came to Austin he played some of those boring songs. A few jackasses back grew impatient and began talking. Phil then proceeded to do one-minute improvised songs about things in the room and how rude people were being. It's rare that I feel cheated out of something that I paid $5 for, but that was definitely one of the times.

      • and he wouldnt let me

take his photo in the cake shop by the luminaire :(

  • I like this album a lot

must get hold of some more Microphones/Mt Eerie stuff.

    • I get really angry when Microphones fans diss Mount Eerie.

I know it's silly, it's all taste and opinion and what not. But Mount Eerie is just the sound of Phil stripping his songs donw to their intimate core. It's the same Phil, singing about the same things, but more direct, more honest. Someone called No Flashlight pretensious. I think it's the very opposite of that, if you just listen to the opening lyrics you'll realise that he wants to communicate his ideas and thoughts in the simplest way possible, the very opposite of pretension.

Mount Eerie / The Micophones probably take up at least a third of the music I listen to. Mostly because there's so much of it and it's all amazing, but also because of the depth of the songs.

  • Yes.

This album. Yes. It's amazing. Really *swoon* and *love* and whatever else the kidz say these days with apparent conviction. I'm going to listen to it now for the entire evening I think.

  • I love this album to death

but have stupidly never got any other of their stuff

    • Microphones

i also have heard a few Microphones' songs and defiantly need to get their album, any album which someone compares to "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" instantly shoots to the top of my most wanted list

  • yes

the glow part 2 is amazing
personally i like mount eerie the album a little more.

Can't get into no flashlight for some reason. But whenever I dip into it it seems great. I really like 7 new songs of mount eerie, anyone got 11 old songs, is it any good?

    • 11 Old Songs

always gets slagged off a bit. It's alright, but nowhere near as good as 7 New Songs.

The Glow Pt. 2 is brilliant.

      • 11 Old Song is horrendous.

It's the worst thing he's released by some distance. Horrible casio versions of a bunch of amazing accoustic songs. He uses the same casio beat about five times and doesn't even bother singing properly. Much better to get Live In Coppenhagen which has all the same songs but in their far better original form.

If anyone finds No Flashlight too dense and weird after the Glow Pt. 2 they should check out Singers first as a much easier transition into the Mount Eerie sound.

        • I'd say sparse, not dense.

The Mount Eerie sound is basically the Microphones sound but without any of that cumbersome creativity and effort stuff.

          • Lyricall]y and thematically dense.

There's an incredibly amount of effort and creativity there. Just listen a little harder,

            • I like the out of control

drumming on some of the microphones stuff but I think I prefer Mount Eerie stuff on the whole
