Free MP3s... Excellent
Sounds like a nice album, but doesn't the 'limited to 500 downloads' thing strike you as rather arrogant/pointless? I mean, this isn't some indie snob's limited edition vinyl run, it's the internet... if you want people to listen to your music on the net you've got to go out of your way to make it accessible to them, especially when it's small bands... i mean, do they not want people to hear their stuff after 500 hardcore fans have downloaded it? plus the fact that downloading a whole album is going to take those of us who don't have super fast connections the best part of a day... I mean I'd probably buy that if it was out on CD, but I don't know...
hmm sorry about the random rant, tis no matter really-

"I mean, this isn't some indie snob's limited edition vinyl run, it's the internet... "
you absolute fukking cock-end! doesn't it occur to you that the reason why small labels put out limited amounts of vinyl records is because they maybe can't afford to press loads? it's not an intention to make it limited edition (at the end of the day, who cares? most DIY labels are lucky to sell all copies of the records that they press without losing money), and it's not a case of being snobbish either. think about it, and then grow up.-
Re: Free MP3s... Excellent
On the other hand, since a lot of indie labels can't afford to put out more than 500 records, what better way to appear indie than by putting out only 500 records? If a band thinks indie is great, and wants to look as indie as possible, then they'll put out limited edition releases. I don't want a big fanbase, because that'll make me a sell-out, etc.
Of course, the same also applies to (a) bands who know they'll only sell around 500 copies but want to hide it, and (b) bands who think they can make more money out of fans by selling limited edition singles/albums/box sets at ridiculously hiked prices.
And, apparently, people who want to thwart their own attempt to get music heard on the net.
love,
Lanky

Re: Free MP3s... Excellent
Umm... yeah that was basically my point. If a label actually can't afford more than 500 copies I don't have a problem with it, it's when bands or labels who could afford a decent run decide to make it an 'exclusive limited edition' or something, especially when it's someone I like but don't like enough to go down to london the day their single's released...
Anyway, you didn't answer the point about the internet thing, which was what I was actually posting about. They could have as many downloads as they like on the internet but they choose to limit it. To think all those (mostly) great artists have gone to the bother of recording covers and they're only going to let 500 people hear. Strikes me as indie snobbery but there we go.
