I don't even have my own computer...

The Mars Volta will step out from behind that velvet curtain that keeps their prog-rock lab so well hid with 'The Widow', due for release on February 8th.

The single - which is quite good, y'know - will be an iTunes exclusive. That makes no sense to me whatsoever, but you Internet-savvy kids will no doubt set me straight.

The single is the first to be taken from the band's forthcoming Frances The Mute album. It's also quite good, y'know.

Frances The Mute is out on February 21st. Apparently.

The Mars Volta release download-only single

Although I do like the Mars Volta, the Widow is sub Bon-Jovi MOR bollocks. Where's the bonkers drumming/guitars/keys eh?

Re: The Mars Volta release download-only single

I never thought I would hear The Mars Volta and Bon Jovi in the same sentance, but you have found a way...

itunes my rectum. good bands against download-only!

The Mars Volta release download-only single

In fairness, as far as I'm aware, The Mars Volta (or, at least, Omar) have spoken of the desire to never, ever have to release singles. He said releasing 'Inertiatic ESP' was degrading, or something. Obviously this is about as close as they can get.

The Mars Volta release download-only single

They're not releasing it only on download apparently; Gold Standard Labs are going to release a 12" with The Widow on it. Other than that, a CD release is unlikely.

The Mars Volta release download-only single

Yeh but The Widow is the most "accessible" 'song' on the album. Hopefully the rest of it is nice and bizarre and weird like it's supposed to be.

Re: The Mars Volta release download-only single

It is, and furthermore, it's fucking amazing... according to someone whose taste in music I trust implicitly. The finished version could well be the best thing I've ever heard.

The Mars Volta release download-only single

I somehow doubt the Mars Volta had much to say about the download release, or, quite frankly, care very much.
The album is the important thing, no?

Re: The Mars Volta release download-only single

I think they release their music on their own label (Gold Standard Labs), right?

Re: The Mars Volta release download-only single

Nah. Their first EP came out on GSL, but then they signed with Universal and everything since is put out by them.

So, y'know, they should quit whining about singles, really - if you're gonna sell yourself to the big boys, you gotta play by their rules..

The Mars Volta release download-only single

Is it me, or have I got a review copy sitting in my house right now? With artwork and everything. They went to a canny effort to pack up a download-only just for me.

Re: The Mars Volta release download-only single

9 times out of 10, download-only singles will still have proper promotional material and everything. It still needs to be reviewed after all.

im sure i just saw an ad in fly or something saying the album was out that day too. downloads are gay

The Mars Volta release download-only single

You mean to say download only singles are gay. Downloads are alright, if you've got broadband.

The new Mars Volta tune, while good, was a little disappointing.

As for the whole itunes shite. I'm a little shocked. There sound is so unique and yet they're doing what everyone else is doing-going all new age internet savvy.

Is it just me or does anyone miss going to the actual shop and picking up a single, listening to it so many times your ears might just bleed and then finally picking up the CD?

The Mars Volta release download-only single

the new album is sweet. l'via is fast becoming my favourite mars volta track. anyone going to brixton?
