London / Manchester four piece Engineers have made the grand statement in their biog that "We're not like anyone else".

What they mean is that they're a million light years away musically and indeed stylistically from such peers as Bloc Party or The Others. The understated 'Forgiveness' will not secure them rave reviews. Their anonymity will not see them set upon by style magazines or Sunday supplements.

So, in that sense, Engineers certainly aren't like anyone else. The hushed vocals, sighing strings and ambient atmospherics bring to mind Elbow or Air (especially on the B-side 'Stake To Glory'). Fans of these two groups may find something of interest here but those who demand something more substantial will find 'Forgiveness' hard going.

Engineers - Forgiveness

I think that this is lovely. But then I do much prefer Elbow to the 'more substantial' Others.

Re: Engineers - Forgiveness

you're right it is lovely but i thought it just didn't have that killer hook. i'd rather listen to this than the others any day.

Engineers - Forgiveness

chilled out and really nice but nothing special. I think Elbow are much better.

Engineers - Forgiveness

I have to say that the reviewers on this website are second only to NME journlists in musical bigotry, illiteracy and lack of flair and imagination.

To imply that buzz bands such as Bloc Party and The Others are 'more substantial' than Elbow or Air is just plain idiocy! If anything the reverse is true, especially in the case of The Others who are surely the ultimate example of style over substance.

Re: Engineers - Forgiveness

That was pretty much the reply I made, but got this reply from the author:

"i'd rather listen to this than the others any day."

So I guess that we both read into it an implication which wasn't meant to be there.
