by DiS News
Scottish pop fopsters Franz Ferdinand scooped two NME Awards at the annual music magazine awards jamboree.

Ferdy added Best Album & Best Track to their recently collected Brit Awards, and 2004's Mercury Music Prize.

This year's event took place at London's Hammersmith Palais. New Order, who won the Godlike Genius Award, played a four song set. Songs played were new single 'Krafty', 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', ’Blue Monday', and 'Crystal' which Bernard Sumner dedicated to The Killers. No, I don't know why either.

Pete Doherty didn't show - sensible boy - but Carl Barat did to pick up the Libertines' Best British Band award which he then dedicated to his estranged band mate and friend. The award was presented by Graham Coxon who picked up the Best Male Solo Artist.

Finally, former DiS Records signees Kaiser Chiefs bagged the Philip Hall Radar Award. Well done lads.

Here's the award's list in full - yes, even the 'silly' ones:
Best British Band – The Libertines
Godlike Genius Award – New Order
Best Album – Franz Ferdinand ‘Franz Ferdinand’
Best Event – Paul McCartney/Glastonbury 2004
Best Live Band – Muse
Best New Band – Razorlight
Best Solo Artist – Graham Coxon
Best Track – Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Take Me Out’
Best International Band – The Killers
The John Peel Award For Musical Innovation - The Others
The Phillip Hall Radar Award – Kaiser Chiefs
Best Video – Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’
Best Music DVD – Oasis’ ‘Definitely Maybe’
Best Film – ‘Shaun Of The Dead’
Best TV Show – ‘Little Britain’
Best Radio Show – Zane Lowe

Best Dressed – Brandon Flowers, The Killers
Worst Dressed – Britney Spears
Best Live Venue – London Carling Brixton Academy
Best Website – NME.COM
Hero Of The Year – John Peel
Villain Of The Year – George W Bush
Sexiest Man – Brandon Flowers, The Killers
Sexiest Woman – Gwen Stefani
Worst Album – Busted’s ‘A Present For Everyone’
Worst Band – Busted

DiScuss: NME readers predictable? Whatever next? Since when have The Others been musical innovators? Since when does shouting a lot on the radio merit an award (and yes we're talking about you Zane Lowe)? Go on - have a damn good bitch, below...

Franz Ferdy make off with two NME Awards

Razorlight?? THe Others??? Pah!

Franz Ferdy make off with two NME Awards

Why the hell has Stefani been voted "sexiest woman" when she seems to be intent on looking like Donald Duck...and she's shit.
Didn't think DOHerty would turn up, surprised that Carl did though.
Shaun of the Dead wasn't funny
I see that Zane Lowe won an award that Zane Lowe dedicated to Zane Lowe because Zane Lowe loves Zane Lowe and can't stop talking about Zane Lowe.
I think Muse's trophy cabinet must be full from winning "Best live band" repeatedly.

All in all Typical NME, surprised that Libertines/Babyshambles didn't win the whole damn thing considering that you pick up a copy of NME and Pete's on every single fucking page.

Zane Lowe.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Haha - musical innovation!?! By doing what?

If it's the guerilla gigs thing, then Embrace were doing a similar thing about two years before them.

If it's the bassist's haircut, then Robert Smith was doing a similar thing 25 years ago.

If it's writing songs 'for ver kids', then Sham69 had that covered about 20 years ago.

If it's being able to 'sing' like a wounded walrus, then I think, again Embrace had that kinda covered early doors.

If it's sounding like a baking tray being dropped in a bathroom, then hey, innovative you are lads.

And Gwen Stefani is not an attractive woman. She may be 'cool' and 'on the cutting edge', but she ain't pretty. But it matters little.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

'Gwen Stefani is not an attractive woman'
I'd do her but as long as she didn't sing.
thought i'd share that with you.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

thank you.

The Others are dire, but then again i wouldnt understand them because i grew up reading the Daily Express. i'm the kinda person theyre hoping to destroy.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

NME.com was always gonna win best website award, right? But how the bloody hell did Brandon Flowers win sexiest man? That's just so wrong.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

re: 'how the bloody hell did Brandon Flowers win sexiest man? That's just so wrong.'
i'd do him just as long as he didn't sing.
ahem...

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Hahaha!

Lots of girls seem to fancy Brandon Flowers. Deserving winner I'd have thought.

Better him than his older brother, Mike.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

bada boom, bada bing! aah mike flowers pops... whatever happened to them?

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

If I recall rightly, The Killers are named after an imaginary band in the video to Crystal. I don't know why I remembered that either.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

ooh, nice knowledge. 3 brownies for you!

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

"The John Peel Award For Musical Innovation - The Others"

Poor bloke is probably turning in his grave.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I got an email today from someone who overheard the following conversation between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the urinals:

Simon: Whatcha doin?
Nick: Peeing through my cock!

I find that much more interesting than the awards.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

i should know this but, er, who's nick frost? is he any relation to jack frost? or michael? sorry, that's very poor...

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

He played Mike in SPACED, and Ed in Shaun of the Dead.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

ah I see. thanks.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

worst dressed -Britney Spears?

It's an OUTRAGE!!!!

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I've already post this question on a different thread, but im going to post it again.

Busted ‘A Present For Everyone’ won worst album, does that mean alot of NME readers bought it?

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I buy NME and yes i do own the album, ok my Nan did bye it for me but i'd like to make the point that just listening to the crap on the radio really can determine tht that album is shit and has therefor been voted for.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

er...hang on. how can you say an album's crap if you haven't heard all the tracks on it?

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

useless bit of trivia. The killers took there name from the fictional band that feature in the video to the New Order song 'Crystal'.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

nice try but iainf got there first. no cake for you. :)

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I have nothing nice to say about Zane Lowe.

He is a fucking dick and should fuck off back to New Zealand. He loves himself bigtime.

And as for this Pete Doherty - what a wee shite he is.
Why so much coverage? He is a talentless smackhead.
I hope he gets over his drugs habit, gives up on trying to be a rockstar and goes and works in Matalan so we can all forget about the greasy haired, rotten teethed stinkbomb.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

raises handbag - ooooooooooooooooohhhhhh. get you.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

He is fit though!!!!

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Hey, weren't the awards all a big surprise?

I prefer the eGigs awards - http://www.egigs.co.uk/index.php?a=10803

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

The question is, how fucking dare they take John Peel's name in vain? Innovation? The Others? They should all be fucking shot.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

a TRUE insult to the memory of john peel.
im actually cranky now.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Best Website – NME.COM

they won their own award. anger.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

The full title of the award was Best Website That Gives A Scarily Unbalanced Amount Of Attention To Pete Fucking Doherty.

Seriously, count the articles mentioning him in the past 200 news articles on the site. It'll shock you.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Yeah! Can't believe nme won the best site award when it is the worst site I have ever been on!
A) The functions don't always work,
B) Staff don't reply to problems in emails especially with passwords loss, meanin you have to start new accounts again and again,
C) U subscribe to the emails about particular artists and they don't arrive,
D)U don't exist when u log in
E) The messageboard has gone!

Anything else?!!!!!! Worst site ever!

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

i'm sure the man Peel would have revelled in an event that solely awarded 3/4/5 piece indie rock bands in the post punk-indie tradition and nothing else..... hmmmmmmmm

they were a joke, but we knew they would be. thats why i'm at dis and not nme.com

nice to see graham coxen get something though, and Paul McCartney

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

John Peel would be spinning in his grave so fast you could attach a dynamo to him and power a medium sized town. Fucking hell I wanted to climb inside the TV and commit genocide.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

As said above (slightly differently) by moscow - razorlight, the others?
get bent...

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

New Order...did they win Godlike Genius just because they've been around for a few years? I fucking hate New Order!

Also, the bassist from The Others is possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen. Ever. Is it me or is he about 45 and gaining the pounds fast?

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Next Year we should make sure that DIS wins best site. I think that in some ways The Others deserve the musical inovation award, not for their music but for guerilla gigging which is a pretty cool idea.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

They may as well not bother having a website category becausxe bloody crap nme.com is just gonna win every year. What a waste of time. You could have fucking written it out before the prize list was announced.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

to be fair to zane lowe, when he used to do the hip hop on xfm he was quite funny. but then, i think he's probably more knowledgeable on that, so taking the piss out of the records and the awful promo stuff he got sent was a bit easier/less likely to result in career suicide as the record labels were in america.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

What a shit awards, no surprises.....the bands that win everything are the bands that the magazine's spent all year licking the arses of...hmmmmmm coincidence..........we need to sell more magazines captain..

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

The John Peel Award For Musical Innovation - The Others

You have to be fucking joking.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Hero of the Year - John Peel

I don't mean to disrespect Peel or anything, but I do have an inkling that a certain cockney smackhead might've won if Peel hadn't died first...

And his death seems to have been the cue for the Brits, NME et al to take his name in vain.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

They're both Scousers actually...

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Villain Of The Year – George W Bush

how topical.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

New Order may of dedicated Crystal to the Killers as in a new order video (I cant remember which one) The Drum Kit has "the Killers" written across the bass drum.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

And do you know where The Killers got their name from?

It was taken from a fictitious band in a Mountain Goats song.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I used to have some mild respect for Zane Lowe on XFM when he used to do some mildly daring things (for a radio presenter)...it was all going well for his Radio One thing when he started playing entire Explosions In The Sky songs...now he's basically the bitch of every NME bands that comes alone. Shame.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

i know we repetitively slag the NME for everything, but really someone needs a fucking slapping for The Others "innovation" mockery. To use the word "innovation" is upsetting enough but to have to include John Peel's good name in the matter is going too far. It's a DiS early april fool's right?

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Talk about slapping your own back with the website award! That's just fucking unbelieveable. They could have rewarded some bands who aren't in the NME every week for once. I mean Best Track - Take Me Out- that's not even in my top 20 of last year no way. The main riff's crap, every time I hear it I change the station or the channel. Best TV show- Little Britain- obvious or what?

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Am i the only person on the planet that thought Mcartney was shit at Glasto? - admittedly i was completely loaded, but it just seemed like a 'Hey i'm a legend! let's go through my back-catalogue and ass-rape each one of them - and you working class scum can sing along and get delirious as soon as any Beatles tracks come out of the woodwork!'

and another thingzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
*men in white coats move in after darting the delirious moose*

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

NME = SHIT

A once great paper is now a fucking irrelevance.

This list is horrific and so predicable of the last few years of it's appalling editorship.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

Lol I think its great they gave an award to their own website. Personally, I think Mike Davies should of got best radio show. I mean, Zane Lowe is ok in small doses like Battenberg, but half the time he rambles about utter bollocks. Lol about Muse getting best live band. Why? For having an hour long set of one song which is feedback and whining vocals. Pricks.

NME Slating

I really don't know why everyone on this site insists on slagging NME off at every oppurtunity. Granted there are other sites such DiS who give better reviews and don't give in to hype.

but the fact remains that the NME is an important part of the british music scene, always has been, always will be.

The NME awards is the only credible awards ceremony out there at the minute, and it is voted for by the people. and whilst you argue that most of these people are trendy boy/girl idiots who also follow hype (explains why Franz always win. is anyone else sick of them?) YOU yes YOU could have done something about it when voting for nominees and winners.

I myself buy NME along with a lod of other magazines and i frequent NME.com along with other music websites.
Read about a bit people and get a load of different viewpoints to think about.

Re: NME Slating

"The NME awards is the only credible awards ceremony out there at the minute,"
well I guess so, but it's only because they have the money to promote their brand. The sad fact is that the Brat awards used to be an alternative to the Brits, celebrating acts that would have had no chance at the Brits. Look at the winners this year, most of them won something at the Brits. Where's our alternative now?

And yes, I did waste 5 minutes voting in the poll, and obviously none of the artists I voted for won.

Re: NME Slating

oh yeah, forgot to add. what's so original about the Others? Playing gigs in tube stations, causing chaos for other people who want to just travel somewhere?

Shit! I'm turning into an old woman. Where's my knitting?

Re: NME Slating

Well i've never heard of a band playing a tube station before, have you?

think that makes it pretty original

Re: NME Slating

that doesn't make it worthwhile. should they do a tour of trunk road laybys ?

Re: NME Slating

For some reason I wasn't convinced by all this talk of guerilla gigging. One reason was/is NME harping on about it all the time. But then I read an article on something unrelated that made me even more certain it was nonsense. It ran something along the lines of 'What is spontaneous about a gig that a load of fans/journalists were invited along to in advance?'

Re: NME Slating

Good point. I spoke to this crazy old bloke at the weekend and he said that people were setting up guerilla events YEARS ago (not sure when, he said it was "back in the day"). They called them "raves" and rather than getting 50 people and 50 journalists on a fucking tube train there'd be tens of thousands of them in fields and shit! Every weekend! And what's even more amazing is that the NME had absolutely nothing to do with it. Apparently, back then it was written by blinkered indie no-marks who didn't have a clue about this so-called "dance" music fad. At least that's changed!

Re: NME Slating

I don't think sites like DiS insist on slagging people like the NME.
Its more a case of providing a reasoned alternative to the prescribed "holy gospel" that appears to be laid down by the populist tabloid element of the music press.
The NME are probably one of the reasons why eac and every one of Drowned In Sound's contributors bothered to care about music in the first place.
Unfortunately, their recent descent into promoting derivative faeces such as The Libertines, Jet and Kasabian renders their contribution to the development of new music futile at best.

Re: NME Slating

Not entirely fair, and for the risk of sounding like a London Cnut, I've met a fair few NME writers, and almost universally, they're pretty cool people. I think the days of DiS blanket slagging what the NME does is, I hope, over. Especially as only a fool would fail to notice that the bands our writers seem to speak most favourably of are currently very similar to those that the NME are showing faith in.

Like Dom said above, it was reading the NME that made me want to do something with music, so it will always have a special place in my critical soul.

Ahhhh. such playing nice.

Re: NME Slating

you couldn't voet for anyone though, could you? the best album i bought last year was by Polly Paulusma and my favourite gig was josh ritter. but in order to vote, i'd have to pretend to like U2 or the killers. and DiS is only slightly broader in its coverage than the NME, really - and has a far lower standard of writing ...

Re: NME Slating

NME is a great illustration of how nostalgia works.

For everybody everywhere, the NME was better when they were younger. I'm the same. I make no secret of the fact that NME was my music bible for a considerable period of time. I mean, if I'd only ever read things like Pitchfork and Stylus, would I ever have discovered some of my favourite bands - the Manics and the Super Furries to name two? Probably not.

And yet still I indulge in the NME slating of which you speak. Why? Because I'm convinced that, in the last few years, it has got worse. The writing is worse. The reviews are a fraction of the size they used to be. The paper itself is smaller and slimmer and dominated by graphics and photography. And, in spite of all this, it's way more expensive.

I still buy the Christmas issue every year. I hold out hope for it. Joking aside, it is something of a national treasure, and I'd hate to see it disappear forever. But ever since it got its monopoly with the death of Melody Maker, it's been in steady decline, and sadly is coming to be replaced with vastly superior online alternatives, such as this one right here.

Re: NME Slating

to be honest i can't remember ever truly enjoying the NME. when i read the melody maker [which was by no means perfect, but brings me far closer to nostalgia than the NME], the NME seemed sanctimonious and joyless in comparison, and now they're just a floppy cross between a libertines fanzine and a hoxtonised Heat.

and the live reviews - "what happens" - "what this means".... christ. are they writing for 8-year olds? [hopefully not, given their recent nationwide crusade to get everyone on shrooms.]

xxx

Re: NME Slating

I don't remember enjoying the NME, ever, either.
Melody Maker, granted.
Select, fo' shizzle.
But the NME...? Nah.
Still read mates' copies all the same, mind.
But it had no Mr Agreeable, and was therefore not worthy of my pocket money.

Re: NME Slating

I was a Maker reader all the way in my teens.

NME used to flip flop around far too often. Despising bands until they became cool and then liking them until they became mainstream. They probably still do - I only used to read friends copies for the gig listings and releases and now we have the net for that.

Sponsored by hair gel? Keep your awards you image focused tossers. I'll just stick to the music.

Re: NME Slating

It's weird, over the past year or so I've found myself reading and actually enjoying the NME a lot more. Tim Jonze recent piece on Patrick Wolf for instance was a great bit of journalism on an artist they maybe wouldn't traditionally be seen to be leaping on.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

did anyone see it on TV tonight? how great were Kaiser Chiefs and at the opposite end of the scale how fucking dire were The Bravery. Will someone please just answer us one question? WHY? The Bravery are total shite.

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

The Bravery are were terrible at the awards and the friday night project. their music is a bit too Duran Duran for my liking

Re: Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

The Bravery make boring boring boring music.

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

I kind of agree, but still don't see the really bad thing about kasabian and jet. Apart from selling their music to adverts I like Get Born.

But Zane Lowe... what an absolute arse. I turn on mtv2 to see him sat on a fucking couch with Kele, talking about... yep, you guessed it, himself...

If only he could die...

Franz Ferdy win two NME Awards

aww franz ferdinand are great they deserve the best album it is great.

but wtf is up with that skank out of the killers winning sexiest man hello people carl barrat!!!!

and how exactly does busted win best band when everyone slags them off and says they aren't a band!!!!
