Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Man of interesting past, Eric Clapton, is to headline Glastonbury in 2007, according to a report on C4’s (very good) teletext site, Planet Sound.

Apparently, old Slow Hands phoned Michael Eavis to ask if he could perform this year, but with the bill already booked, Clapton’s had to settle for a slot the next time the festival takes place. The site is to take next year off in order to generally ‘sort itself out’. Speaking of the former Cream man, Michael Eavis said "Eric's a favourite of mine, he'll be brilliant."

Blimey.

imagine having the kind of festival power where you can turn down eric clapton ... jus picture it ... bloody hell

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

my mum will be there like a shot.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

our TV remote's broken, so i can't get my daily-fix of C4 Teletext Planet Sound. it's slowly driving me mad.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

now eric clapton.... he actually is the most over rated musician of all time. Somehow he's managed to become legendary without actually doing very much at all, and none of it groundbreaking.

Re: Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Agreed! Anyone can wank out a shitty blues solo like Eric. Cocaine? Wonderful Tonight? Crap!

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Layla anyone? fucking class tune

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

I agree - Layla is amazing.... but not the shit guitar part.
I'm talking about the piano but at the end bitch!(the part wot Clapton never wrote, it was the drummer).

It's used to good affect at the end of Goodfellas.

What do you mean I'm funny?

Re: Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

He's in a mental hospital now - the drummer

2008 - Dire Straits
2009 - Gary Moore

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Thank fuck. I thought it was this year.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Hopefully Eavis will keep putting it off til the ne><t year so that Glastonbury doesn't turn into some sort of middle aged suit fest

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Somerset Mud doesn't really do suits any good

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Calpton = total gash.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Eric ClappedOut. Great.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

hmmmmm, i wonder what's on the other stages

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Cream were quite good. Its all been downhill since then, really. Weren't they going to reform?

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

They're reforming for a four-night residency in London at the Royal Albert Hall for four nights on May 2-3 and 5-6.

Is Glastonbury 2007 a benefit show then?

That talentless twat (ok Cream were good) would turn up to the opening of an envelope filled with envelopes if it meant he could play another generic blues riff in some kind of arse-kissing jam session with some much more talented musicians! The Band! Bo Diddley! Dylan! Tom Waits! Roy Orbison! Muddy Waters!

He's like the friend you don't really like but he keeps turning up everywhere and annoying you, but you don't have the heart to tell him to fuck off 'cos his kid died...

Fuck off Clapton!

Excuse me.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

It was funny when he went crazy and ran off with George Harrisons bird.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Amazing how you can rip off dead blues artists and do cover versions of stuff all your career and get away with it under the pretence he's a serious artist. He's no better than Jamie Cullum.

Jesus Quintana neglected to mention Robert Johnson as well, he ripped off him too.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

I was mentioning the much more talented people whose stages he has invaded. Then raped. Repeatedly. In the backside.

But what they hey. Back to the car-crash that is the NME awards...

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

If it's Cream, I'll go watch. If 'Wonderful Tonight' is involved, I'm leaving the country that weekend.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Ah c'mon. Yes I know hes overrated but to call him untalented as a guitarist is silly.

Re: Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

erm... i'm not that disappointed he's playing... i quite like him... in fact i might call him a bit of a legend...

Clapton was good at one time, back when he was with John Mayall. The Mayall Beano album was the best thing he ever did. Cream was massively overrated, had some good enough pop songs, but was massively boring to see live. Oh, and he played nicely on the Bonnie and Delaney On Tour album... But as a singer-songwriter he would never have been able to put an album out if he weren't already famous for being Eric Clapton. And he didn't write Cocaine, by the way; it's a JJ Cale song. Just one of the mellow songwriters he became attached to after kicking heroin. The best reason not to get addicted: you tend to become a veg in the aftermath.

this is an absolute disgrace for glasto

Ditch the oldies!
Menswear for 2007!
Reclaim the stage! Reclaim the stage!
Who's with me?

BTW, lovely to see Planet Sound's name get dropped like a bomb. Their letters page makes me happy.

Jeers in heaven: Clapton to headline Glastonbury

Sounds like I am going to be alone watching Clapton. Talented as hell. Everyone one that has been around as long as him has released some wank. You should know by now that at least one headliner isn't for the kids.

Clapton and Free?

My money is on Clapton coming on with a reunited Free. He and Kossoff were a massive influence on each other - it would be perfect!
