All the best songs tell a story. They have a beginning and a middle eight and a huge rousing end that makes you want to fight or dance or have a little cry. 'Club Hoola Hoop’s Walls' is no exception: it’s the tale of a couple of hipsters trying to get it on but being so cool they almost miss each other. In the hands of Morrissey or Jarvis or emo this would be a tale of derision, sung with a sneer. With the frenetic energy of Cherubs however it becomes something not only danceable, but also life-affirming.

Staale’s vocals range from a drawling ennui to a yelping delivery that makes him sound like a Julian Casablancas** who gives a shit, and the whole thing is played with the bouncing urgency of Kaiser Chiefs. Containing as well the ‘STOP- has it ended already or are they only playing with us-START’ that everyone loves, this single has dance-floor-filler elegantly scrawled all over it.

The hipsters do get it on in the end, incidentally. Sorry to have spoilt the end, but all the best stories have a happy ever after.
