I say the one on Guerilla Radio by Tom Morello because quite honestly who the hell can make a guitar sound like a harmonica?

But everybody, please share your thoughts.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

queens of the stone age: feel good hit of the summer
shudder to think: red house

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea by The Cure.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

out there - dinosaur jr

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The best guitar solo is on Master of the Universe by Pulp from their second album Freaks in 1986 - everyone with an ounce of brain knows that and if they dont they are sorely lacking in every normal function

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I know this may sound a bit obvious but,

'Star Spangled Banner' - Jimi Hendrix.

He was the daddy of making guitars sound different, and although, we may all pay lip service homage to this track, it is difficult to imagine/remember how unusual this track was at the time, he pioneered many sounds that were totally new.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The Funny Bird by Mercury rev. Without a doubt.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

That is an awesome solo. Spiralling, intense and noisy as hell.

Also - REM - Flowers Of Guatemala
Yo La Tengo - Sugarcube

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The Flowers Of Guatemala - yes! So simple but so wonderful. The bridge just leads into it so naturally. It makes me blush.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The bridge is amazing too in that song. "Don't look into the suuuuuuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnn...."

What a fucking ace album Lifes Rich Pageant is! Best first four tracks on any album I've heard, I'd say.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Creakyknees, weren't you around back then??

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

But guitar solos aren't just about that, otherwise everyone would be saying Eruption by Van Halen. We can't forget passion, delivery, timing, song positioning, suitability, etc. Technical fireworks are one thing, but sometimes a two- or three-note solo can be so brilliant in the right context.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The Auteurs : Light Aircraft on Fire

2 bars of heaven

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The snooker theme, gets my foot stompin' every time!

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Too true, but he did also have the timing, delivery, passion, and even a social/political context for the song, but I know what exactly what you mean, showboating can be dreadful.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Jonny Greenwood, on Radiohead's "Paranoid Android". Probably a load better than that but hey...

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I'm usually not a big fan of guitar solos, but i reckon i'd pick something like Ash's "girl from Mars" solo- uses every cliche in the book, but i sing along every time. Also Weezer "say it aint so" and Stone Roses "ten storey love song" for similar reasons

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

it's obviously jimi hendrix. everyone else is shit by comparison.

picking bands like Ash and Mercury Rev is...

...just....

awful.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I vote the second guitar solo in Stop Breaking Down by the Rolling Stones. That's a classy one, awesome vibrato.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Yes John_Brainlove

But

You

Would say that.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I just know you guys are gonna just hurl when I say this, BUT:

On that DVD of Warren Zevon making his last record, The Wind, Bruce Springsteen comes into the studio, straps on his Fender Esquire, and, with Warren sitting not two feet away, does the most
passionate, heartfelt, soul-stirring, kick-ass solo these ears have just about ever heard. It just goes on and on and on, too - like he doesn't ever want it to stop, cuz when he does, he knows it's over. His last solo for his dear friend, Warren.

But when it IS over, Warren is pretty much speechless. He goes, "Whoah. You really ARE him!" And Bruce leans over his guitar and kisses and hugs his friend.

Word.

Guitarists and guitar solo afficianados everywhere owe it to themselves to witness this one. Even if you think Bruce is pants. This one'll make your ears (and heart) bleed.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I don't 'do' solo's but if I have to, the only cool ones are those on Marquee Moon by Television.

And if you want RAWK cheese....

We Will Rock You - Brian May.

Sweet Child o' Mine - Slash.

Enter Sandman - Kirk Hammet

Communication Breakdown - Jimmy Page

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Yep, Sweet Child O'Mine is a classic, and how you you also forget:

Just - Radiohead (what a fucking solo!)
Beat It - Michael Jackson feat. Eddie Van Halen
We Will Rock You - Queen
Anything by Kirk Hammett

And if you want to know what the public think:

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Muffin Man-Frank Zappa. Great song. Starts as a joke and ends with one of those solos where you just keep going to your mates 'listen to this bit...no what about this bit...'

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I like Frank Zappas solo on What's New In Baltimore ?, the instrumental version on Son Of Cheep Thrills.

Slayers Captor Of Sin is good, it starts with a solo.

Is this unusual, or are there lots of songs that start with guitar solos ?

The best 12 string acoustic playing has got to be Leo Kottke.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The solo on The Stooges No Fun is quite hard to beat.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

But it is beaten by Wacko Jackson's Beat It

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

smashing pumpkins geek usa. And also the aeroplane flies high. Not too technical but hella effective

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

More importantly, who the hell wants to hear a guitar made to sound like a harmonica?

Too many guitar solos are horrible cases of valuing Musicianship over Music

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I know I would. The first time I heard that song I was like: HOLY SHIT! THEY PUT A HARMONICA IN THERE! THAT'S AWESOME! But that's just my opinion.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

1970 by The Stooges; two different guitar solos coming from the two different speakers and mad acid sax over the top. Also, Dirt by The Stooges...actually every song on Fun House has a stellar solo.

Same goes for Marquee Moon by Television. Aside from Hendrix (which is obvious) I don't really listen to bands who play solos though there's one on Getting Bright At Night by The Icarus Line which slays so hard.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

randy rhoades....paranoid

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

If we're talking geetar - Janie's Got A Gun - Aerosmith

Best solo ever - The Kiss by The Cure

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

i love crap solos, like the one in diabolic scheme by the hives. all over the place and messy as anything, barely working. thats a real solo.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I have to agree with that statement, though there are some exeptions. I hate really pompous solos which are just there to show off how good the guitarist and add nothing to the song.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Mine has got to be Jimi Hendrix - Machine Gun. That song is 15 minutes of Jimi making sweet love to his guitar.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

all the solos on Propaghandis "Todays Empires, Tomorrows Ashes" get me going fucking nuts....

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, anyone? Eddie Hazel = dude.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Speeding Motorcycle (i think) by Yo La Tengo has a really long one note solo. track three off 'i can hear the heart beating as one' anyway.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Carpenters - Goodbye To Love
Zeke - Live Wire
Focus - Hocus Pocus
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
Monster Magnet - Twin Earth

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Sugarcube?

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

yeah sugarcube is great, deeper into movies is also good. dave pajo at the end of good morning, captain! but lou reed on run run run is probably my fav

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

I posted Sugarcube earlier in the thread, but come to think of it I think Stockholm Syndrome (track seven on the same album) has an even better solo! I'd say at least the first eleven tracks on I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One are nearly perfect.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

My favourite track is probably either Damage or Autumn Sweater. No guitar solos, but beautiful.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The Kinks - 'You Really got me' of (the guitar did not sound dirty enough, so they cut the speaker cone) fame.

Also I know it might not be considered a guitar solo, but the guitar bits in the following make me go a bit funny

Buzzcocks 'Everybody's happy nowadays'
Radiohead ' Iron Lung'

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Jeff Buckley on just about every song (though, maybe, not technically a 'solo'). And I gotta add this: Hendrix always sounds like he's tuning the damn thing, to me.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

"Hendrix always sounds like he's tuining the damn thing"

1. He does not. have you tuned a guitar? It does not sound like Red House.

2. He is the geatest bow down!

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Re: Have I tuned a guitar? Erm, yeah. But I only get it right when I cheat with one of those l'il machines. Cos I suck. :-) But boy-o do we have fun out in the barn destroying Bowie, Stones tunes. I do a particularly terrible EATB Killing Moon I'm proud of. :-)

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

MACHINE GUN or by Hendrix

also if anybody has the Hendrix box set track seven on disc two the instrumental Bold as Love is just about the best piece of music ever recorded and probably contains the best solo also

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

"Starless" by King Crimson. One note. Again and again. For about five minutes. The tension is unbearable.

or "Firth of Fifth" by Genesis. Sheer beauty.

N.

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

On that note, my favourite solo is either '21st Century Schizoid Man' or 'Travel Weary Capricorn' by King Crimson.

Robert Fripp is a genius legend dude awesome YEAH

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Bastard! I was gonna say Robert Fripp. :-) Good call!!!

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

The live version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" on "If You Want Blood...You've Got It" by AC/DC

Re: Most Awesome Geetar Solo

Hey Lanky! Good call with "Firth Of Fifth"! Proper killer tune.
