Who's writing good lyrics these days?

I was just reading the review for Interpol's 'Antics' and people seem to be really hung up on his lousy lyrics. Someone said that nobody writes good lyrics anymore but that can't be true can it?

Which bands still producing music do you think write really good lyrics?

First i thought of was The Walkman

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Wilco. Tweedy is damn good. The Streets, of course, too.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Ian Brown
Damien Rice
Primal Scream

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Absolutely. Jeff Tweedy is probably the best lyricist of his generation, the way he twists words and phrases until they acquire meaning is quite amazing. Mike Skinner is class too, yeah.

Other great lyrics - listen to the Wrens. I dunno the name of their songwriter (in fact I think songwriting is shared around the whole band) but they do a great line in bitterness and poignancy. Look at the lyrics for 13 Months In 6 Minutes or Everyone Choose Sides for an example. Ex-Girl Collection too, that's one of the wittiest and yet most affecting songs of the millennium.

Brand New's Deja Entendu album is a masterclass in how to write GOOD emo lyrics, which is something almost no other band can do. Yeah, it's whining and bitter but it's so damn sharp you can't resist it.

If you're looking for something a little weirder, try Modest Mouse ("are you dead or are you sleeping? god, i sure hope you are dead!") or Xiu Xiu ("cremate me after you cum on my lips"). Both excellent.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Ex-Girl Collection - absolutely! I fucking love the lyrics in that song. So wry.

Anne slams in/Another lightning round begins/This could get interesting/Where's Anne been?/She pours herself a don't-ask gin/No ice and light on the bitters/"I'm done with quitters"

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

The Streets are fantastic...

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Bright Eyes
Saul Williams
The Roots
Rufus Wainwright
The Faint
...erm... blah.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

And without sounding biassed, the lyrics on the thisGIRL album are really lush and create little worlds which unfold around the riffery.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

I think it's hard to say what qualifies as good lyrics, because it all depends on the context, i mean the nature of the song kind of determines how important the lyrics are. I love At The Drive-In's lyrics, they're enigmatic to the point of being ridiculous, but in their case it doesn't matter. With bands like Interpol lyrics are just so much more important.

Also, i completely agree on the Walkmen, 'When i used to go out i knew everyone i saw, now i go out alone if i go out at all' (there are plenty of other examples too) is just so simple, but complete genius.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

It was me who said lyrics had gone downhill. Perhaps I was exaggerating. There's plenty of people out there who write good lyrics, but the whole new rock revolution and its style over substance attitude seems to ignore that in favour of whether they've got the right jackets. The Streets, The Libertines, The Flaming Lips, Sufjan Stevens, Devendra Banhart...there's plenty, just no-one ever fuckin' talks about 'em. Except in this thread.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Those who've said Jeff Tweedy are absolutely spot-on. In the rock pantheon at least he's way ahead of the pack.

Hip-hop's where the real action is, though - my personal pick would be Sage Francis but Vast Aire, Brother Ali and Aesop Rock all have that certain special way with words...

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Ben Gibbard, whether Death Cab or Postal Service is a brilliant lyricist

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

James Mercer - The Shins, there's nobody better at the moment in my opinion

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Pete Waterman
Peter Andre
Cathy Dennis

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

I'd agree with that about James Mercer. Intelligent and Meaningful without being pretentious. The best lyriscist's do appear to be American at the moment. Of course, for sheer comedy, Britain is best. Falkous anyone?

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Frank Turner of MD fame and i agree with the BrandNew commenter...

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

um...Mountain Goats.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

I second the Ben Gibbard motion, the guy is nothing short of a legend. His lyrics on Give Up are awesome.

(All the company calls amount to one pay check)

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Ben Kweller
Simple Kid
the White Stripes

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

i really think daniel fell of the argonauts is a great lyricist. Swords & Words, 2 Sides and Turning The Corner have good lyrics but my favouarite is Just A Ride.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

You guys probably aren't going to take me seriously because I exaggerate everything about Bad Religon but Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz are two of the best songwriters ever, if not the best. But other good writers are Black Thought (The Roots), Kanye West, Dave King (Flogging Molly), whoever the hell writes for The Hives, and OutKast, although personally I likes Big Boi's lyrics are better.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

I've always liked The Shins' lyrics; kinda witty and just clever tbh. Other than that, currently, Fugazi (assuming they're still going, I'm not sure), Interpol (when Paul Banks gets it right, he gets it very right), Devendra Bandhart (sp?). Hmmm....and Cedric from Mars Volta, purely for the fun of trying to figure out what the fuck he's actually talking about.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

DIZZEE ;)

add the killers to the "lousy" list too. excruciating.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Bill Callahan is a lyrical master in my view.

The libertines - definitely.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Hell yes! McClusky! "All your friends are cunts and your mother is a ball point pen thief". Geniusssss.

Also responsible for the best song and album titles ever. How can you not love 'The Whole World Loves Me And Is My Bitch'?

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Dermo from Silent Partners writes great lyrics.
"The way you dance, is the way you fuck, the way you feel, is the way you look."
I think that's great anyway.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Jim Bob of Carter USM wrote some of the most clever, venomous, topical and touching lyrics of the 1990s. And so many clever pastiches.

No, I am serious.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Always liked Billy Corgan's lyrics.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

SMUG, SMUG, SMUG.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Oh, you are! Let's see, William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Chris_undereducated, David Bowie (cos it's my post!), Shelley. Pass the Bushmill's:

I met a girl from Kansas City
She had gumballs on her titties
She could sing and she could dance
She had a mustache in her pants.

"Bartender, either it's me or my friend Chris here--but one of us needs a cab!"

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

FIERY FURNACES BY FAR

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Not a bad call. A bit rambling, though. I do love 'Blueberry Boat', so I shouldn't argue too much.

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Cedric Bixler
Damien Dempsey
Conor Oberst
Tim Kasher
Issac Brock

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

Re: Who's writing good lyrics these days?

The Mars Volta (eh? what was that sorry?)
The Libertines
Ben Kweller
dont expect they'll be bringing out anything new, but i love crash test dummies lyrics.
Bjork - a lyrical genius
