They are more of a rock band. I prefer to have the songs relatively stripped down.

Molina changed the name in 2003 with the release of...'Magnolia Electric Co.'

Live, he still plays some Songs: Ohia material as heard on the Trials and Errors live album, but generally he tends to play newer material at live shows rather than reverting back to older songs. It's doubtful we'll be hearing Captain Badass live again.
Either way, i'm wetting myself with excitement about these shows.

Me too!!! I've been pestering the folks at Secretly Canadian for years to have them include the UK. I've bought for London, and Bush Hall is such an intimate little place too.

Also, of the early Songs:Ohia albums, which is the best to get?

My big fave is The lioness. It's basically just Molina and the two Arab Strap guys and was recorded in Scotland. It's about desperate love that just falls apart with such a fragility, and i totally adore it! I have all kinds of live stuff and singles containing awsome songs like "How to be perfect men" or "Naopleon". His S:O stuff seems to be characterised by his shaky relationships with women, with the move into MEco dealing more with decaying industrial Mid-West communities. He captures an incredible feeling for loss and desolation, and the album "Didn't it rain" is so brilliantly filmic when you close your eyes.
I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!

This is Jason Groth from Magnolia Electric Co. (guitar player). Let me clear some things up. The entire band that is now called MECO was Songs: Ohia before it changed it's name. Jason Molina has always, for the most part, just played new songs at shows. The live record was recorded as Songs: Ohia in Brussels in 2003 when we were all fresh in the band. Songs: Ohia does not exist anymore, but the music would have been the same, new band or not. Molina's just moving in the direction he had been moving since Didn't it Rain. Like you all have said, the real difference is that he is treating it more like a band now, as in we are the same members who have been in the band for two years. But just to set the record straight -- we have never played anything older than stuff from Didn't it Rain, and Jason writes so many songs that we have to play new stuff at shows just to keep up. Looking forward to meeting you all there!
