Let's face it, Harlow isn't usually viewed as the location of choice for an evening of top quality entertainment but The Square, essentially a run down youth club, is a beacon of hope and salvation amid the crumbling concrete jungle. Here, 'ver kids' run rings around the grown ups while screaming their heads off or snogging each other senseless - and that's just the boys.

The partial reason for their excitement (the other part, presumably too many fizzy sweets) are the fantastic Fans Of Kate, a frenetic North London four piece, with looks and wardrobe straight from Indie Pop central casting. Plus, perma-grinning, barefooted drummer Nick Eburah looks like 'The Mighty Boosh' character Vince Noir. FACT. Then, there's the music, a sugar fuelled rush of sexy, sonic pop thrills best exemplified by dance floor filling monster 'Excuses, Excuses', and 'Tape 23' - the missing link between 'Pablo Honey' -era Radiohead and The Killers. New single, 'I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands' is not only brilliantly named but brilliant. Period. Fans Of Kate may not know what to do with their hands but several young girls know what they'd like to do with theirs if they ever got near singer Jez Dixon and co. WOOF!

All this puts Pure Reason Revolution in a tricky spot because no matter how good they are - and they are good - the hall empties visibly by the time the 11 minute 'Bright Ambassadors Of Morning' bubbles up from the ether. Like, FoK, Pure Reason... look great - a bit like the cast of 70s kiddie scaring sci-fi series 'Tomorrow People' - and sound brilliant. Unlike FoK, Pure Reason... are no instant pop buzz. With their vintage, analogue keys, 11 - yes 11 - effects pedals, gut-troubling bass and love of beard stroking prog rock, Pure Reason... require an investment of time and effort to appreciate fully.

Perhaps this is best demonstrated by the dedication shown by the two blokes who motored down from Manchester to Harlow just to see Pure Reason... in action. Say hello to Brian Selwood & Phil Childs, nice lads for sure, but given that this is the third time in 10 days they've seen their new found heroes one has to question their mental health. Surely Pure Reason... aren't that good are they? Well, no, but with fans like these Pure Reason.. will soon have an army of dedicated followers to call their own.

As for FoK, they appear destined to be chased by screaming teens everywhere. See you on CD:UK soon lads.

Pure Reason Revolution

Only 11 pedals?
Bah.
That's NOTHING.

Pure Reason Revolution

I was extremely annoyed when PRR cancelled in Bristol the other week - stupid louisiana with its newfangled 'limiters'

Pure Reason Revolution

It was well worth the trip to see PRR (even if I've been caught on every speed camera inbetween) but I wouldn't travel very far to see FoK. btw the names Phil but thanks for the mention Anthony.
Long Live the Revolution!!

Re: Pure Reason Revolution
