Sometimes it’s right to question ‘authority’: broadsheet broadsides have implied that this comeback single from the Nick-less Queens Of The Stone Age is some kind of bolt from the blue; that contemporary rock needs this dirty rush to reinforce its dangerous reputation diluted by so many would-be/could-be showboaters. Well fuck rock’s reputation because this won’t change shit – ‘Little Sister’ is an A-grade single and nothing more. And that’s A for ‘average’.

Here’s another A: arseholed. Oliveri’s drink- and drug-fuelled benders may have seen him tossed from the good ship Stone Age, but with him went the feeling of euphoria that ran riot throughout the band’s earliest material, right through to ‘Go With The Flow’. This single, whilst suitably saturated in filthy guitar licks and a squealing, almost childish keyboard sound, lacks the acid-burned smile of records past. Its sobriety is its ultimate downfall, as without his clown prince beside him, Josh Homme’s songwriting is workmanlike at best and purely average at worst.

A-grade he may be, but it’s indefinite detention for Homme until he gets his substance-enhanced swagger back, naturally or otherwise.

  • Queens of The Stone Age 5 / 10
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

    Nonsense.
    It's a fabulous record.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Apparently its the worst song of the album.

Bodes well that i really like this then :)
    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Yeah, I read that this was one of the first songs Homme wrote for this record, so I imagine there are much better ones to come.
This isn't a bad song by any means - it's just that it feels a little too by-numbers, y'know?
      • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Perhaps. Olivers added something even though Homme writes 90% of the songs.
        • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

          Oliveri. *ashamed*
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

this chorus smacks of Catch the Sun by Doves, and that can't be good.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

This is incredibly bland as a comeback single...sounds like the kind of song I would have thought Josh could write in his sleep...
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

indeed, 'tis one of the weaker tracks on the album, but i still love it.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Spot on review. It needs an injection of the rock that only that bearded bastard could provide. I'm not too worried about the entire album being crap, that seems unlikely, but the screamy Oliveri tracks will be missed.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

The Oliveri tracks were boring as hell vocally, only enlivened by Homme's amazing guitar bulldozery. Now he may have robot-rocked himself into a corner where he builds songs like a ginger builder building Barratt Homes.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

this song is rubbish .... its got non of the feeling or fire that made queens of the stone age and rated r such fabulous records.

im not holding much hope for the new album, looks like its following the radiorock route that parts of (the very patchy) songs for the deaf hinted at.....shame they used to be awesome
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Songs for the Deaf wasn't exactly patchy, maybe a couple of fillers on there
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

i like the song, the album im still waiting to hear from it, but although olivieri did bring sokmefin special to the music, we cannot expect a band not to give into evolution. thats why we love music!!
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Possibly the most ridiculous review I've ever read.

Nick wasn't on the first album, therefore, you know nothing.

This song was written around the time of Rated R, therefore you know nothing.

As someone said, Josh has always written 90% of their stuff, therefore you know nothing.

You're perfectly enititled to dislike the song, but please do a little research before writing a pointless, lazy, uninformed piece of nonce sense review like this.

    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

      well said.

it still isn't a very good song, although Josh's modern day Elvis face in the video looks very cool.

and do you mean 'nonce sense' in a Chris Morris/Phil Collins sense?
    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

"This song was written around the time of Rated R, therefore you know nothing. "

iv heard its an old song ... but have you ever thought why the quality control process in joshs head kept it off two albums ?
maybe cos its a lazy boring song with non of what made stuff like avon , regular john or better living through chemistry so damn good

I found this pure balls, it disappoints me that one of the guys behind the legends that were Kyuss, and the first to QOTS albums can produce such unmitigated turd. Songs for the deaf was wank. This is wank. Little Hope more like it.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

    Indeed I do.

    FUKD and BOMBD

It's a catchy little ditty. I didn't like it too much at first, but it gets better with repeat listens. Weird solo too.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

did Oliveri do much on the earliest stuff? i thought he came in later. so comparing the newest stuff to the oldest in terms of oliveri's influence would be most apt because he would not be a factor in either?
    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Yeah, he wasn't present at the very start.
      Bit of an ERROR there.
For 'earliest' read 'stuff what propelled them into the public ear'.
But it's not really his presence that I'm referring to specifically, more that Homme's songwriting seems to have lost the joy of that earlier work, on the basis of this single anyway.
I am yet to hear the album.
      I have my fingers crossed.
      Cos I love(d) QOTSA.
      • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

        album's proper qual
this song is quite good but it sure ain't da best innit
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

ive checked quite a bit of the album, sounds quality, like songs for the deaf part 2, which we all kno was quality. an album i hated at first but has such an awesome sleazy rock feel to it once u kno it. an uncomfortable but irreplaceable bedfellow if you get me
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

I just created an account so I could post about this review, looks like jesus_quintana got in before me. Awful. Iim quite liking the song mind, album's decent too.
    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

It ain't a classic, but it's a grower. That said did anyone else think 'No One Knows' was some way off being the best track on 'Songs For...'?
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Josh was in Kyuss and Nick was in the Dwarves. The single isn't bad, i have all of the QOTSA albums. I saw them live during the 'Songs For The Deaf' tour with Nick on bass, and i'll never forget him smiling at me in the the audience. He has sadly gone the same way as Neil Busch has from the Trail of Crap. It always seems to be the way, the ones with the big personality are booted out, must be envy, man.
    • Re: Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

Nick was in Kyuss as well.
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

yeh nick played on the almighty blues for the red sun
  • Queens of The Stone Age - Little Sister

apparently josh threw nick out because he was beating his GF. He's a fucked up party animal but that's really drawing the line and i'm glad josh stood up for women. hard rock can be too macho and QOTSA have alwasy stood for something more openminded and liberal that's why they called queens to confuse meat head metallers
