Artists: Youthmovies
DiS favourites Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies are in fact set to re-press last year’s thoroughly impressive mini-album 'Hurrah! Another Year, Surely This One Will Be Better Than The Last; The Inexorable March Of Progress Will Lead Us All To Happiness' on May 9th - not, as we previously said, re-release. The Fierce Panda EP/LP will as previously stated, include new single ‘Ores’ (released April 11th), and a 65DaysofStatic remix of ‘…Spooks the Horse’ will be included.

Alan English of YMSS told DiS: "We’re really keen to stress that Hurrah! is not being re-released. It is merely being re-pressed. We have sold out of the first 2000 limited edition versions and so are re-pressing the record with new artwork.

We were always going to have to do something new once the handmade versions were all gone and we don’t want people to think they’re being ripped-off.

'Ores' is available as a CD single, the video is available to download for free and we will be making the 65daysofstatic remix available on our website for anyone who bought the original version of Hurrah! and understandably doesn’t want to shell out for the re-press."

So there

Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Not impressed with this. Fair enough if they'd just include Ores, but including something exclusive stinks a bit - I'd have expected better from YMSS / fierce panda, to be honest...

Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Well I'm sure if you ask them very nicely they'll do a special version without the exclusive track just for you.

Re: Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

I'm sure if you just wanted the tracks you could download them from some clever mp3 shop, infact as of later today I could say you could get them from the new drowned in sound mp3 store.

Re: Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Or you could go suck a pony instead.

Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Hurrah! I mean, yay...The fact that Ores is going to be a single next month anyway is a little shocking but still, I think I'll be buying that.

Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Does this mean my original copy is gonna be worth something? I almost spilt tea on it last month, soggy cardboard is horrible.

Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

Fucksake!

I didn't buy the original copy just so I can wait a few months and be screwed over by a reissue.

Thank goodness Ores is coming out as a single though. Cheeky muthas.

Re: Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

How EXACTLY will you be "screwed over" by this?

- if you want 'Ores', buy the single
- if you want the video for 'Ores', download it
- if you want the 65dos remix, it'll be on their website so you can download it
- heck, if you want the cover artwork for the repress, it's on their website now

maybe what's "screwing you over" is an obsessive need to own every piece of ymss-related paraphernalia going (in which case, join the club :-)

Re: Hurrah! YMSS to re-release

The original story didn't say repress it said rerelease.

This is a good thing.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

so in what possible was is there a difference between a repress with new tracks and a rerelease with new tracks?
i mean, really?
it really doesnt make much sense to me, and it certainly doesnt make me happy. how limited will Ores be? what chance do i have of picking it up?
mp3s are all very well, but not everyone has access to downloads, and CERTAINLY not everyone likes compressed sound.
it seems somehow to be rewarding people for not buying the original pressing,
ALTHOUGH
how many tracks will be on the Ores single?

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

Three tracks on Ores single.
Session tracks I fink.
Not too sure.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

session versions of hurrah material?
and how easy is it to come by the old albums/mini albums?

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

Sometimes I think about putting Al in my pocket and taking him home.

Then I think to myself: 'That's probably kidnap you know. Not such a great idea. Have another beer and stop talking to yourself freakface.'

And I do. And I forget. And then I nod slooooowly to Spooks The Horse until it gets to the end and then I go 'DER DER DER DER DER DER DEEEERRRR DERRRRR DEEEERRRRRR DER DER DER DEEERRRRRR' and spill whatever remnants of pissy lager I have on my trousers.

YMSS are awesome.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

'Sometimes I think about putting Al in my pocket and taking him home.' I know what you mean, he is very sweet ;)

As to the discussion, I don't know what all the fuss is about. YMSS are a fantastic band, who I go to see play whenever I can. I am also happy that there will be a new single and a repress with extras to buy, as will most fans I think.
Bands like this need support, encouragement and record sales!

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

it's also quite possible they weren't expecting to sell 2,000 copies of 'hurrah!' in the first place and as they're obviously more proud of it than the first ep/mini album, it only seems fair to make it more widely available to accomodate their growing fanbase.

so there.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

not saying they shouldnt repress, theres no reason why they should limit the amount of people that can own their records, but i dont know why theyre so keen to not have it called a rerelease.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

I don't recall saying that it should stay limited and that I want to be as l33t as fuck, nor anyone else here. Perhaps you could point to where someone does?

The point it is, like, I bought this album months ago, and it's just a bit short changing to see a rerelease with material not available elsewhere on it. I don't like rebuying things because, well, that's £8/£9/£10 I could spend on another CD - I don't have unlimited amounts of money, but there seems to be unlimited amounts of music for me to spend it on, so rebuying things is a waste of time and resources.

Plus, they SHOULD repress 'Let's Get Going...' ;-)

Anyway, y'know, congrats to the band for having the guts to put the 65days remix for free on the website, that's decent of them.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

Bands like this need support, encouragement and record sales!

Yeah, but c'mon - so do other bands. I already bought the record once, so why should I buy it again?

Obviously, I know the band have said that's not what they expect, and it makes a lot of sense to include Ores on the repress as well [standalone single, so doesn't bother], but it just agitates me when any band rereleases something with extra material I can't get elsewhere - as I said initially, it's just not what I expect from bands who have control over the output and seem to value their fans as much as YMSS.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

But the extra material is available elsewhere!

The remix will be available for free on our website (as you mentioned in your other post!) and we have offered to make copies for anyone who asks for em.

xx

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

I was replying to Chris' post and saying how I disagree that "fans would be happy" to rebuy something if extra material was involved, and also attempting to explain why I had that attitude in the first place.

As you've pointed out, you've rectified it and I'm more than happy, but it doesn't mean I won't back down that cash-in reissues with new material are horrible in principle, and the information initially available *did* make this look like one :P

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

oh.. the copies changes it for the better.
still: what is this fundamental difference between a rerelease and a repress that youre so keen to define?

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

(sorry...update emails don't show the whole thread)

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

to be honest, i think its great news. the original is great, loving the diy nature of it, and its good to know that they have become popular enough to justify it getting repressed.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

Surely the fact that more people can get hold of this brilliant record can only be a good thing? Or is it better that only 2000 people should be allowed to bask in the glory of being able to listen to it?

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

We're keen for it to have it called a repress because that's what it is.

A re-release reeks of cashing in and that certainly isn't what's going down here.

We have no 'record deal'.

We have to take everything as it comes.

Fierce Panda told us that Hurrah was going to sell out and asked if we wanted to set about hand-making a bunch more sleeves. We chose not to because we wanted to keep the first edition special. We all sat round our kitchen table for a week putting each individual copy together. We never expected that they would sell out.

We like the song Ores.

We want as many people to hear it as possible.

We asked if it could go on the repress of Hurrah! because only 1000 copies were being made of the single.

There wasn't enough money to put the Ores video on the single, so we asked if that could go on the repress too.

Our friends 65daysofstatic had done a remix for us. We have no other releases in the pipeline after the repress of Hurrah!...

So we could put it on that, or sit on it until someone somewhere decides that they might possibly want to release something else by us.

We're not pissed off, it just feels that this is slightly unnecessary criticism y'know?

Alcxxk, I know you have been around for a long time and for that we're truly grateful. But we don't want anyone to buy Hurrah! twice, that isn't what this is about. Nor do we want to reward people who didn't buy the original pressing.

It was just an opportunity for more people to hear our music... And we figured that if we had the opportunity to, then why not let them hear as many songs as possible?

And for anyone who already bought Hurrah! and really wants to hear the 65daysofstatic remix, but doesn't want to download it... Send us a SAE and a CDR and we'll make you a copy next month. Email band@ymss.org.uk for the address.

Ymss xx

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

All of that is fair enough - thanks for the honesty and open attitude, it's an ace chance.

I don't think anyone was ever saying that you're evil bloodsucking fiends, it just seemed a little... off.

One question, though - why not just include the 65days remix on the Ores single? Or are you expecting a bone-crunching, disco-stomping, hand-clapping surprise hit with it and didn't want to threaten it's chart eligability? ;-)

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

Ores is released in about 2 weeks and unforunately we only got the 65 remix on Monday.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

Ah, fair enough - I asked cause I remembered Al talking about the possibility of something else "special" and "unreleased" on the Hurrah! reissue a while ago on the YMSS board, that's all..

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

i guess its kind of situation thats gonna have its disadvantages either way. it all makes a lot of sense, and its inevitable that theres gonna be some dissatisfcation, and you seem to be making every effort to appease that, so good on you.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

and that, it would seem, is that.

ores is rather good, only just got round to these guys but looking forward to hearing more.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

yeah. awesome, inventive band. likeable guys. bad haircuts.
The polar opposite of Franz Ferdinand?

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

I have an original copy of this. So fooking what? It really irritates me when the exchange value of a chunk of plastic gets pushed up beyond all proportion. The effect of this is that the music becomes a slave to commodity fetishism, which is boring.

A while back, the first Boards of Canada ep (vinyl) on Skam was going for a vast amount on ebay, like £200 a copy or something. Then Skam re-pressed it with the same artwork and you can now get it for a fiver in Selectadisk. I like this attitude.

Let the collectors covet their nice cardboard sleeves; everyone else just wants to hear the fecking music.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

You missed the point - I *was* talking about the music. The packaging is nice, but that's hardly what I give a toss about.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

"Let the collectors covet their nice cardboard sleeves; everyone else just wants to hear the fecking music."

Seconded.

(Although i do like a good piece of CD artwork. Gives you something to play with while you listen...)

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

Yes, and I was complaining that I wouldn't get to hear the 65days remix unless I rebought the album. How is that obsessing over the packaging and not the music? :P

As it stands, it's all good now, cause the band are good sports, and I do feel a little silly for having to go on about this, but people seem to keep missing my original point and it's a little frustrating to be labelled as a collector nerd with a fetish for corrugated cardboard and paper fasteners.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

I wasn't labelling you thus. I understand YOUR original point. Luckily it seems you will get to hear it one way or another;)
I also like a bit of unusual packaging.
I guess I just wanted to have a big fat dig at people who are obsessed with something's value as a collector's item, really. It's even worse with electronica/techno music: people will spend £50 on an original issue even when the repress is available! Muppets.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

To be fair, everyone should buy Ores simply for the crazy synth bit, dancetastic :D

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

everyone should just shut up moaning and buy everything this band releases because they are the best band in the country. FACT.

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

Or you could just visit the Post-rock section of your local record shop and buy all the albums from circa 1999. Then you'd have the original versions. :D

Whenever I happen to bump into YMSS I feel like I'm in a time warp. I guess no-one else is doing it now so it's still valid & interesting and all that, but I do feel like someone is covering my teeneage record collection!

Maybe this is what getting old feels like. :(

***

Reissuing with extra stuff in an 'unlimited' version so more people can hear the music is surely a good idea. When the Corrs etc. do it they do it for profit, I'm guessing the lads are doing it for love of music.

Remember how annoying it is when you discover a band only to find out all the tracks you like are on an EP/LP you can no longer get? And then stop quibbling.

<goes to dig out Come On. Die Young et. al...>

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

hmm, while i respect the fact yr tryin to stir controversy i have to say, YMSS are nothing like cody era Mogwai.

ymss don't really on guitar pedals to keep you intrested.

ymss put emotion into their music

you can tell the difference between one ymss song and the next.

ymss dont call other bands to compensate for a lack of talent or inventiveness

i could go on...and i will

the songs dont sound like 3 random notes, repeated for five minutes until someone steps on a distortion pedal before fading out into the same notes but played in a different way.

at ymss gigs people dont just stand there scratching their beard, some people actually move.

(as you can tell, i ain't a mogwai fan)

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

"ymss put emotion into their music"
WHAT? Are you saying that Mogwai don't. Go and listen to Ex Cowboy or Hunted By A Freak then tell me that there is no emotion in the band.

(For the record I think both Mogwai and YMSS are great)

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

I prefer Arab Strap (and Silver Mount Zion). :p

I can hear elements of loads of different artists (CODY was just the first album that came to mind) the above two, anyone on Constelation records, even lo-fiers such as Urusei Yatsura all come to mind.

I was hoping to bump into them at a festival again this year to see if the sound had developed - I'm guessing I will, and that it has.

At Truck I went because people who know what I like told me that they played my kind of music. They just didn't wow me. That said they are more interesting that the majority of music around, and definitly better than Hope Of the States.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

actually (i think) hunted by a freak is actually a good song, i know a lot of people wont agree but
i think that the verse chorus pattern works well.
still, i dont think its really emotional, jus the sequence of notes makes a nice melody.
maybe i went a bit overboard, jus defending YMSS and purveyors of intresting music thats right.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

I'm always open for musical discussions with like-minded people!

UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

Ooo, this date is getting closer by the minute.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-release

I got my mits on the reissue/whatever on Friday.
It is nice.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

No you didn't. You looked at it, but didn't touch. You just lied to the nation Diver. Lied like a fox.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

I said my mits were on it.
They were.
That is no lie!
I opened it and everything.
(You're just jealous cos everyone except YOU gets a thank you.)
(That said, I guess Al thanked you himself...)

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

Tee hee... *blush*

I'd prefered my thanks.

Re: UPDATE: Hurrah! YMSS to re-press, not re-relea

One day to go, ooooo, the tension, I better win a copy or else I'll have to part with some money.
