I’ve never liked the saying “less is more”. I mean, seriously, what’s that about? Will I really benefit from having fewer chips with my sandwich or a shorter summer holiday? I always assumed it was the cynical quote of a penny-pinching politician, not a potential ethos for musical artists, but the more I think about it the idea sits firmly in the latter. Just take young Londoner Tom Vek’s latest single, 'I Ain’t Saying My Goodbyes': three minutes of straightforward drumming, tinny guitar, and non-sensical lyrics comprises one of the most infectiously exciting singles you’ll hear this year.
Stripped of all frivolities, the song focuses around a simple guitar-drum tandem that drives the song while Vek crows and shouts along for the ride. With a little electronic conditioning to keep things clean, 'I Ain’t Saying My Goodbyes' basks itself in the genius of its basic composition, and invites you to do so too.

Hey Heliotrope! I realise that everyone has an opinion, but to simply say 'a bit shit'!! Well i mean, not really constructive is it! Why you think it is shit would be better don't you think?
I mean, i see you are a streets fan! Well i really dislike the Streets and think they are SHIT! I think he does write reasonable lyrics, but the musicial content holds nothing for me. And once I'veheard his 'words' once or twice it simply becomes boring to me. If the music was better, then i would listen more! But its not, so Yaaaaawwwwwnnn!
Please, just think first ok! Where would we all be if people didn't offer a critique, and simply said it was CRAP?-

well, i find him bland, derivative, and frankly, when i saw him live i was just looking foward to the end of his set. there was just nothing about the music to make it stand out.
besides that, he seems like a cocky bastard too...-

personally i think he's much better live than on record as the bass is more evil-sounding. If that makes sense. -

Not seen him live yet but absolutely loved 'If You Want' and the new single is even better. Sounds like a one man version of The Rapture. OK, it's a bit cut and paste, but hey what isn't these days (-waving old man stick).
Reminds me of when i heard the first Badly Drawn Boy EPs... -

I've got tickets to go see him live next month, and i'm really looking forward to it. Got a few of his tracks on MP3 and i'm quite impressed.
This new single is incredibly catchy, but have to say, the video is a little erm... dodgy!

Tom Vek will be appearing at Mike Hand's Weather Club on Saturday 2 April at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn WC1.
He will be supported by The Pipettes, Elwood Grace and the Not Cricket DJs.
