'Goodbye My Lover' - y'know, one of many songs about some pretty face that ol' ugger James Blunt likes to bash one off to (possibly) - has been named the song that most UK residents would like to soundtrack their funeral.
Fifty-one per cent of those polled - of which there were 5,000 individuals - selected the song above previous number one 'Angels' by Robbie Williams. Which suggests that fifty-one per cent of those polled are filthy sadists who hate their families and friends.
After all, it's not like you can hear things - even spectacularly awful ballads - when you're dead.
The Bereavement Register compiled this top ten. Read it and die, already...
1 'Goodbye My Lover' - James Blunt
2 'Angels' - Robbie Williams
3 'I've Had The Time Of My Life' - Jennifer Warnes and Bill Medley
4 'Wind Beneath My Wings' - Bette Midler
5 'Pie Jesu' - Requiem
6 'Candle In The Wind' - Elton John
7 'With Or Without You' - U2
8 'Tears In Heaven' - Eric Clapton
9 'Every Breath You Take' - The Police
10 'Unchained Melody' - Righteous Brothers
Say the people at The Bereavement Register:
"(This) really shows how far we have come in terms of saying goodbye. Gone are the dirges of yore, instead we are seeing contemporary music that is easier to relate to. Everyone has a favourite song that means something very special to them, often connected to a particular time and place."
I want
I am the resurrection by the stone roses
People are so miserable
Euk I find it all a bit depressing. Why dont they want something to cheer people up, rather than make them cry more?
because...
it's a fucking funeral, maybe?
alive
alive and kicking - simple minds....
WHAM
wake me up
(before you go go)
best suggestion
ever :D
at a funeral for a friend of my brother-in-law
they ahd Heaven Knows I'm Misreable Now by The Smiths as his funeral song - best choice ever.
'I've Had The Time of my Life'
yes and its reached it apex by being buried or burnt to a crisp. Oh dear.
For me it is either Steptoe & Son or Lovejoy - I want people to laugh and as I won't be there there is no point my going "Oh I want some Elliot Smith and a bit of classical music I heard in a film once" etc
Unchained Melody
is a beautiful lament ruined by being in the film 'Ghost', so all the plebs have it atalltheir seedy family occasions which just debases the fragmented mournfulness of this song. And to think of a Phil Spector production being played in such ugly houses and venues makes my skin crawl.
I'd have...
...Heaven Is A Halfpipe
How about
'Highway to Hell'
or
'Disco Inferno' ?
Only at a cremation, mind
True story
I guy I know was djing for a benifit of the families of the stardust fire (A nightclub that burned down on valentines day 20 years ago) and after the speeches the first song he played was disco inferno.
'Buried Alive' by Cradle of Filth
or 'Burning from the Inside' by Whitesnake probably. Though its more likely to be about his massive penis than burning alive
haha
ace
I'd have..
Into My Arms by Nick Cave
A+
this is a fucking fantastic choice of song
yep
high five!
wut?
no November Rain?!
surprised
whiter shade of pale by procul harum isn't there.
personally i would go for tourettes by nirvana.
All these people are missing the point
Blunt clearly wrote that song about a Dorset farmer.
Also "Gone are the dirges of yore" - how ironic.
funeral marches
i think i want 'my father my king' by mogwai. not only do i like it a lot, it'd also annoy people at the same time. it'd have to be played very loud as well
high five
for that. people would have to sit there for so long, and some people would be able to do nothing but rock the fuck out.
"i've had the time of my life"?!
AHAHAHAHA.
hahaha.
I can't believe
so many people would ALL choose that song, they must have made them pick from an already bad list...
i was once supposed to go to a funeral
at which My Heart Will Go On was to be sung.
KILLED BY DEATH
MOTORHEAD
or
the benny hill theme
We had
Niel Young's version of 'Imagine' at my mums... I think it was a nice choice. We made people sing.
We
had to listen to My Heart Will Go On at a memorial service for someone who died in my school. Except I went to a Welsh school where they didn't want to play the English lyrics so they played a PanPipes version. It was all rather silly.
Been to one funeral
The song was 'Days' by The Kinks. Quite beatiful.
*beautiful
That would be my choice
I think.
i want
Going Underground by the Jam
I'd have...
...Paranoid Android. That'd cheer everyone up.
a friend of mine wants Fade to Black
!
Me too, and a friend of mine, just for the end solo.
I've always considered 'Symathy for the Devil'
All my friends would know they had to sing the 'woot woos' or I'd haunt them.
A friend of my missus has 'Spirit in the Sky' at his funeral.
duh - 'Sympathy...'
.
I See
a Darkness by Bonnie Prince Billy
woooo
also a good one, but rather depressing
Anything by Radiohead
if you want to take a few people along with you. :p
I'd have
Stainless Steel by iliketrains. I'd like to imagine a fight breaking out just as it's reaching the meltdown bit
I'd have...
It's easy to sleep when you're dead by of Montreal
Remember Bladerunner?
I'm having the main theme by Vangelis played as the coffin's taken out, the experience finished with smoke machines and a laser show.
I'm going to have a portable photo booth style thing outside the church as well with polaroid cameras in it. Ladies I'm not related to will have the oppertunity to take some form of minxy polaroid picture(s) before the service and they will all be buried with me along with a flashlight and a mp3 player full of good tunes.
Thus if I turn out to just be really ill/hungover rather then dead I won't really mind about the whole being burried thing as I'll have Petsounds and pictures of all my friend's wive's snatches.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond
By the end everyone will just be pissed they've stood up for nearly 20mins.
my choice will surely be
the theme tune from Bod.
please note
i will have The Shins 'New Slang'
and people will cry DAMN THEM!
...
i knew someone who had Lark Ascending, very apt, but definitely not a dirge.
We Be On Fire - Sona Fariq...
My Uncle had...
Laura Veirs, which was quite nice.
I'd either go for something ironic (a la Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now or possibly The Ape of Death from the Boosh) or a bit of Ben Christophers 'youmyloveforyou' or Radioheads 'How to Disappear Completely'
I'd go with "It's a Motherfucker" by Eels
Self indulgent - yes
Tearjerking - yes
Swearing in a house of God - oh yes!
Motion Picture Soundtrack
.. by Radiohead. Depressing, yes. But what a song to go out on.
Mayonaise
By Smashing Pumpkins.
I'd also like under the bridge, despite what I think about RHCP.
Antony and the Johnsons - "Hope There's Someone"
Without a doubt, tears would ensue.
Aphex Twin
Ventolin.
Haha
Flaming Lips
Do you Realize?? for me. ive got a while though hopefully
If they played any of these songs at my funeral I'd haunt them forever.
I want 'going deeper underground' by jamiroquai. Even though he is shit.
I think
I'll have The Rise And Fall at my funeral.
Or the Benny Hill theme tune. No point in anyone getting too depressed, I'm gone, get over it!
My sister wants
Asleep by the Smiths.
I'll take Eyepennies by Sparklehorse or Always waiting for by Six by Seven. Or You shook me all night long by AC/DC.
Asleep? Depressing, indeed!
I've only heard the Xiu Xiu version, mind.
Hmm...
Tonite and Today by Xiu Xiu
Strawberry Marigold Joydrop
River Joni Mitchell
Rebellion (Lies) Arcade Fire
I've thought about this far too much.
If its Joni Mitchell...
...its gotta be The Circle Game, one of the best somngs ever written.
TRUFAX
wow
you win this thread
always
look on the bright side for me
monty python always go down well at a funeral.
i also want my ashes to be comedically knocked over at a dinner party or something.
you're all taking this too seriously...
it's your funeral. have a laugh. you won't mind, you'll be dead. saying that, if james blunt was at my funeral i think i'd come back to life and die a second time of severe boredom.
Suicide Machines cover of
"Its The End of the World As We Know It"
probably.
id want
Suga Free- Dont Fight The Pimpin.
id definately want something uplifting. maybe an Arcade Fire song would fit well, and not just cos of the album name.
if it had to be something a little more solemn then definately Debate Mandare by Sigur Ros
Perhaps we should be thinking context sensitive
e.g. if I die in a car accident - In The Backseat by The Arcade Fire, if I die in a house fire - Burning Down The House by Talking Heads etc...
If it was a heart attack...
'Total Eclipse of the Heart'
Bonnie Tyler
'I Love Lake Tahoe' by A
I've been banging on about this being my funeral song for years, but only if I'm consumed by something.
If I died in a boring way I'd want an hour of groaning and sobbing.
Better Idea
The whole of Reign in Blood in full, with everyone going nuts and stripping the church bare.
but then
your left-behind relatives would have to cover costs of said damage.
unless you left money for the church to rebuild, knowing as you did that the church would be fucked up.
I want...
Joy Division - Atmosphere
please
Zombification
The Mister Benn theme tune would be cool as you head into the earth, or furnace...or catapulted off an aircraft carrier.....
going underground
the jam
I was at a service and the relative had Edith Piaf, non je regrette ne rien. that was cool. as was old man river.
My Mum
is gonna have Muse: Blackout.
But me I've been trying to think of something more upbeat than Sparklehorse's 'Gasoline Horseys' for about 6 years
Hit 'Em Up: Tupac
Just for the bit where Mr Tupac's all miffed at the start "so ah fucked YO BITCH YOU FAT MOTHERFUCKER..WESTSIIIIIIDE! [fake money] etc. oh yes.
'Nobody Likes You (When You're Dead)'
by Zombina and the Skeletones.
Bobby McFerrin
Don't Worry, Be Happy.
i'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.
I'd have The Final Countdown - Europe
Id have...
anything by Curl Up and Die.
i'd
probably have 'welcome to the jungle' cos it'd be fucking funny
