'Is Nu Metal dead yet?

I FUCKING HOPE SO.

Snerk: that sound you make when you laugh so much you lose your breath and end up doing a slight pig imitation. Not that I've heard it being called a snerk before, that in itself made me do a snerk of my own.

Talk about a generalisation. Most bands write about some kind of relationship, most of the emoish bands that i like have loads of songs about things other than love.

THE ICARUS LINE ARE NOT EMO. I have no idea why they're ever referred to as emo either. If you haven't heard much by them think The Stooges, The Jesus Lizard, Spacemen Three etc etc. Definitely not emo.

But the term was being bandied around long before Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot appeared on the scene. Korn and Deftones were on their second albums by the time Bizkit released their first and Linkin Park didn't turn up 'til three years after that - the same time as bands like Disturbed, Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm, etc.

Nu metal is the early Deftones/Korn sound - bass-heavy metal with hip hop influences in the rhythm section rather than the vocals. The heavy hip hop influence came in 1997 - the year Fred Durst appeared on the scene and Korn recorded "Follow The Leader".

So Bizkit are very much the Nirvana of nu metal: a bunch of Johnny-come-latelys who had some commercial success and then became so ubiquitous they killed the scene stone dead. But just as Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam can still put out albums (of varying quality, it must be said), so Deftones and Korn are still very active, within the limits of a decaying genre.
