Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

by DiS News
Maybe it's because DiS still frequents said things, drinking cheap lager and waving their arms in the air to terrible songs, but that idea that BBC Radio 6 are attempting to find the best indie disco in the the world ever warms our hearts and chuckles our cockles.

Or possibly it's because we're banned from our favourite ones for falling over and breaking a man's leg whilst trying to do a one legged hop-spin-pirouette to 'Born To Be A Dancer' by the Kaiser Chiefs and now we need to find a new one...

Regardless, why not get on over to this linked bit on the BBC site and vote and share your memories. Or do the old 'I really can't remember - it was so long ago, but the mid nineties were a golden age and everyone dressed like Brett and Justin!' type thing...

Oh and you can probably win stuff as well... so that's always good.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Can we do one for worst indie night?

I vote for The Waterfront in Norwich, it's turned into some youth club for 14 year olds playing skate and goth shit all night.

"Burn down the disco... hang the blessed DJ"

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Its painfully bad.
And slightly surprising that there isn't any good "alternative" disco action in Norwich, when it has such a lovely local gig scene.
Unless the night Nykie Colk used to run still runs at what was The Light Bar not so long ago.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

The whole Norwich club scene at weekends is competely overrun with cheesey rubbish, whether it's r'n'b, garage, goth or skater shite... it's all the same MTV driven muck.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

indeed. some nights used to be half decent, but now there's all expensive things and hipster clothes partolling around, it's pretty sickening.

The best is blatantly the Fan Club in Leciester. It's now closed I hear and I'm still in mourning.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Um, Fan Club was open the last time I went, Oxygen is the one that shut.
It's alright but I always seem to turn up on 80's night and have middle aged women trying to grope me.
I usually go to Mosh cause Fan Club is a bloody long way from where I live.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Fantastic...that 80s night caught me out a few times too, Fridays wasn't it?

Mosh is good. Typical that they open it when I've moved away. Mozzy Coast on Mondays though...they were the days...

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Ramshackle in Bristol's pretty good, apart from the fact that the lager promotion is only on Carling - which tastes like piss - and the other drinks are prohibitively expensive.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Ramshackle is shite in birmingham,

It is the same night isnt it?

The one run by steve gerrad

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

It has a DJ called Dan who is enthusiasm central... and after the first few months it now gets a decent attendance. Plus two other rooms with more jazzy or more metal stuff, depending on your inclination.

I believe the same people run it. Never been to the Birmingham Academy, although I will be doing so in June to see Weezer...

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Dont know of a dan in brum(maybe thats what we're missing), but it has to be said that sounds better than ramshackle in brum: the venue's soul less and only has one other room. Used to be alright in the second room, sorta sixties/indie, but the guys who ran it were able to get there own night so they've left now.

I've not been to ramshackle since (although im bound to at somepoint) although the new dj's in the second room are claiming to play sixities/electro/indie so should be alright...

But there are better nights on in brum at the same time, resurrection at subway city and snobs or red ballon every other week (luckily they're on alternate weeks), both are as cheap if not cheaper, with more variety and a better crowd of people

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

It is the same night, and it is run by steve gerrard.

Generally pretty busy in Bristol too - normally about 1400 people+ when students are about

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Is that at the Basement? Bang your head on the ceiling-tastic!

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

slightly off topic,
is there a photo library that DiS uses for all these quality drunkard pics?
i'm loving the one on the notting hill piece with the guy's head in the bucket!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Oooh ooooh...
I found that one.
*pushes chest out with pride*

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

No, but google is our friend.
If you have any pics, please do send them in.
New site will allow for photo galleries and better crediting :)

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Snobs in Brum is usually a good night.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Agreed....

At least i think its a good night...

Often cant remember that much about it, but that may have something to do with the 50p shots

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

God, I hate Ramshackle. It's just too big, and the DJ appears to just play Sabotage by the Beastie Boys over and over again. And it's filthy and disgusting and they charge you £2.20 for a ridiculously small bottle of water. I'm liking Resurrection at Subway City a lot though! Everyone dresses up and makes an effort, it's cheap, and there's lots of exciting rooms. Well done Shaun Walsh!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Did you ever go to laid?

Shaun's night before he did resurrection, used to be at the dance factory and then moved to snobs on a thursday where it died a death because people seem unable to get their heads round going to snobs on a thursday, despite better music than wednesdays (particularly at the time) and the same prices.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Hmm, went to it once at the dance factory, but I didn't like it - far too loud and too much Stone Roses/ Charlatans/ Oasis etc. Resurrection is great as it's much more varied.

Did you ever go to the short-lived Rollercoaster at the Sanctuary? That was brilliant, especially the room at the top with experimental djs in, and the nice bit with patio furniture!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

I never made it to rollercoaster, used to have ridiculously early starts for work on saturdays and sundays, so i didnt get much chance to go to clubs at the weekend. It sounded good though : ( Did make it to groovy garden once, but ended up looking after my friends so i didnt really get to enjoy the night.

Agree about ressurection's varied nature being really good, just wish that getting to subway city didnt involve having to negotiate the underpass/bridge/chancing it across the queensway. Then again its a neccessary evil, i really like the venue itself. Lots of nice small rooms.

This is making me homesick now : (

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Ah, if you don't live here now, maybe that might explain why I don't recognise you! Although that's probably not right, as I'm presuming you have lived here while I have (in the last 5 years). Did you go to that Hefner gig at the Medicine Bar a few years ago? I stood behind John Peel. Ace.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Im a student (although not for much longer) so i'm sometimes in brum and i'll be moving back there when im done studying, which is probably why you dont recognise me (that and the fact that my photo is a bit silly on purpose so i retain some anonymity).

That hefner gig was brilliant, i was so gutted that i had to go home instead of going to the afterparty. I'd promised my mate a lift and he really wasnt up to staying out.

Still got to see hefner, so its not like i can really complain

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Although i've been there a few times and know Birmingham well, i actually have no idea where it is!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

No idea where what is?

Medicine bar is at the custard factory in digbeth (very close to the coach station)
Ressurrection is at subway city. Go to snow hill station and walk down the road to the left of the entrance, get over the bloody big road and keep on going and subway city is on your right (in one of the railway arches)
Ramshackle is at the academy.

Does that help?

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

cookie club in nottingham and the friary in derby are both *okay*. pretty much killers killers killers all night though.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

The cookie club is awful, fucking awful!

Rescued at The Rescue Rooms and Liars Club at the Social are the best indie nights in Nottm.

The liars club is attended by a lot of pretentious dicks though!

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Rescued is pretty cool if you don't go too often. It gets boring quickly.

Special mention to Crash on Tuesdays at The Rig as I dj there.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

is cookie club next to wetherspoons? i remember getting threatened with death in the pub before being subjected to a stone roses medley in the club - nice. not been to nottingham since....

evol in edinbugger is alright - even if it isn't free from stone roses medleys itself.

did anyone ever go to britpop at visage in doncaster on a saturday night? it was class! (in a shit i'm suick to the floor!3 VK for 2, bargain! i swear i didn't know s/he was 14, honest! kinda way)

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

you would say that, you're in a shit band. DDF? Ha! Fuck 'em.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Its alright, but theres far better elsewhere.

Its not big enough, drinks arent cheap and theres only one room.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

one of these days I might put the 'local hot spot' saying to use, by settling my local hotspot on fire...

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Hey we don't even get 'indie club nights' down here, you be grateful.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

The Brush in Rayleigh. I'm not saying it's great, but I'm pretty sure it's the only time The Brush will get a mention on these pages

Legend has it that it was the first ever alternative venue in the UK, and that people used to flock from Liverpool etc just for a night out. Roll on The Brush!

It's actually called The Pink Toothbrush if anybody cares

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

In London terms, I would have to nominate FROG. Mainly cos it's got decent DJs and cheap booze. Just enough bits to keep you dancing, nodding your heads and no Stone Roses....

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

No Stone Roses:
Good Point. Why do I always end up being asked to play The Stone Roses, The Smiths, The Cure etc when I dj, usually by people who are far too young to remember them first time round anyway? Is it some sort of retro cool thing that I'm missing out on?

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Personally i request at least two of those bands because i like their music, doesnt matter whether its 'cool' or not, the fact is that i enjoy those bands. Equally who gives a shit if they're not current and they released records when i was in nappies, surely if its good music, its good music. I enjoy dancing to the smiths and the cure when im pissed (and sometimes the rosed too, but i dont tend to request them), thats why i request them, its got fuck all to do with retro cool.

And this from a person who gives the beach boys four out of five at the grand old age of 22 : P

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

I heard that one of the DJs at FROG smelled like wee wee and liked to ROFL a lot.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

"no stone roses"

which is an ENORMOUS point in its favour.

i'm sorry, but like them or not, you can't dance to them. no you can't. shuffle about a bit maybe, but not dance. where's the shape-throwing?!

alas, i would have to disagree on the cheap booze front - if you don't fancy the offers, it's pretty expensive - i'm a double vodka girl and it slays me :(

nevertheless, i like frog.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

When Groovy Garden was on once a month at Sanctuary in Birmingham it was good, with Biffy and Har Mar.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

as for best....stonelove in newcastle

as for worst...ku club sunderland

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

in brighton it has to be the pav tav...it just does. my friends though used to run a night called punk trap which was ace and was more alternative guitar rock than indie pop. but i would dance so i remember it as an indie club. not quite sure of the logic...but yeah, pav tav.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

i am in utter agreement with the Ku thing, its horrific

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

I usually go to Buttoned Down Disco when I'm in London, much cooler laid back clientele, and a great lack of playing to the scensters. I've found FROG and Death Disco to be hugely overated, especially when compared to Smile at the Star and Garter in Manchester. Unfortunately, the Hair Brigade have been sneaking in recently, so I'm hoping it doesn't go too far down the shitter.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favou

Evol in Liverpool would be a fucking bosting night, if it wasn't populated by pretentious twatbags would refuse to dance or even step 5 metres away from their own reflection. When it used to be at Heebie Geebies is was the best night around bar none, boss tunes, boss venue cheap drinks, good clientele, now it's at the Lager Academy its all gone down the shitter.

I have to make do with Panic at the Barfly, which suffices for cheap crap beer, and thats about it. Liquidation Pop Club is so shit nowadays its unreal. Full of twathead students who can't handle their Kronenbourg

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Fools Gold in Glasgow? Its pretty cool, lots of drunken hairy psychos and a lava lamp light thing on the wall to stare at. Usually a bit too empty though...

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

haha, all these people talking about shaun walsh. thats great. his night laid, at the dance factory was great, although there was usually only about 40 of us there. Ressurection has really taken of, and its better than anywhere else ive been back home in birmingham....much better than snobs and ramshackle is essentially bad both here in bristol and in birmingham...except here we have Dan from propaganda so we get that un-ending, relentless jumping, smiling and camera-clicking. so i guess ramshackle is worse here maybe.

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

KU club rocks out with its cock out man!!!

thats it see ya

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

ahh i remember going to the groovy garden thing to see thisgirl.. was great night i do remember..

ressurection at subway is brilliant tho i agree.. compared to ramshackle.. the music is much varied and more room etc
plus its cheap! and fun-er..!
its great fun once you manage to find it hahha..

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

I don't like Subway City for the fact its a cunt to get served at their shitty tiny bars.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your f

Thats fair, but its not like it isnt a cunt to get served in either snobs or the academy either....

Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

why has noone said silver rocket is good? i am going to cry...

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

It really is a fucking good night in fairness.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

I'm never drunk there, though.

SO... best drunken night out USED to be the Crazy (Krazy?) House in the 'Pool.

Dancing to Busta and ODB on two-for-one MGD. Class.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Thank you crablin. I'll dry my eyes and put my fishing rod back in the cupboard.

Michael Diver when were you ever at the Krazy House? We used to go there every week, back in the day.

I've been drunk at silver rocket, every time. One day i'll learn how to dj when sober (get paralysing stage fright unless hammered)

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

Most weekends between the years 1999 and 2002.
I was meant to be getting an education, or something.
Failed.

Re: Drunken nights, lagered fights - what's your favourite indie night?

I expect you told me this, once, but I also expect I was drunk for some reason and forgot.

We were there, er, a while before you... we went to the rock nights on Fridays and occasionally the indie-schmindie one on Thursdays. We revisited the Friday night club a few years ago and found the crowd had moved from slightly-moshy-in-the-name-of-fun to full on wankers trying to hurt people for no good reason.
