A man in his mid-30s fell to his death this weekend at Camden Town's KOKO venue.

The man, who is yet to be officially named, was out with workmates for this past Friday's (7th May) regular Club NME event, when he fell from the first-floor balcony down to the dancefloor, sustaining severe head injuries. The whole incident occurred in front of a packed venue and before the first band had taken the stage.

KOKO was closed for the rest of the evening and the following night whilst an investigation was carried out by the Metropolitan Police. It was confirmed on Monday that no crime had taken place and that it was just a terrible accident.

The man died in hospital yesterday afternoon having been on a life support machine since Friday night and undergoing extensive surgical attempts by doctors to save his life.

The NME has yet to comment on the situation.

This evening's show with The Kills and a future gig featuring Death from Above 1979 are still scheduled to proceed as normal.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

Man dies at Club NME

I thought you wern't going to run a story on this?

Re: Man dies at Club NME

We didn't have any details then. Now we have official statements and information, it's fair to report upon.

It's a bit of an oversight that it's hardly been touched upon anywhere to be fair.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Although i think its fucking awful that the nme havent at least published a message of condolance (sp?) to the poor guy's family, the fact is that its the venue's fault not the nme's.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

I agree. It's not even necessarily the venue's fault, but the NME's failure to pass any type of comment just reeks of PR crappy crap.

I don't really think that should be the issue here though.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Yeah, dont think it should be the issue either. Just pre-emptively posting before someone starts nme bashing.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

so it shouldn't be too much to do with the nme?
so why make the headline about nme and not koko? i think a venue on the gig circuit says more than a weekly night run there. also there are a bunch of club nme venues...
i'd say it makes the story more catchy though.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

To be fair, if he only died in hospital yesterday, the mag ships on what, Tuesday? There'll probably be a mention in next weeks issue if there's going to be one.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

I get what you're saying, but there's no mention of it on the website either...

Re: Man dies at Club NME

perhaps awaiting official statements, much like DiS?

There are legal considerations around this kind of thing

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Or maybe its his fault for being a bit too drunk.

Man dies at Club NME

DFA1979 are playing there? Oh god, I might have to go now.

Last time I was at Brixton it was two days after someone fired a gun at a Nas gig and now I'm gonna go here after someone DIES.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

WOW! That's really spooky!

Christ. I was watching TV the other day AND SOMEONE DIED!

AND IT WAS IN THE SAME COUNTRY AS ME!

Man dies at Club NME

Death from Above? Bit of an inappropriate name don’t you think?

Re: Man dies at Club NME

hahaha

Re: Man dies at Club NME

hahahhahahhahahhahahahah etc.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

and The Kills is ... appropriate?

Re: Man dies at Club NME

How come The Killers aren't being arrested left, right and centre? They're asking for it.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Quick, get them to change it!!

Man dies at Club NME

Oi, don't get sarky Gareth :P

I was gonna make that DFA joke, but I decided against it...

In 1974, no-one died
In 1975, no-one died
In 1976, no-one died
In 1977, no-one died
In 1978, no-one died
In 1979, no-one died
In 1980, someone died
In 1981, no-one died
In 1982, no-one died
In 1983, no-one died
In 1984, there was the incident with the pigeon
In 1985, no-one died
In 1986, I mean I could go on

Re: Man dies at Club NME

The Day Today. It's better than falling off a balcony.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Look at the ground and say sorry.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Oi!

What's goin' on 'ere?

I'm trying to run a high class bureau de change - not some 2 bit Punch n Judy show down the seafront at Margate.

Man dies at Club NME

Colin's lost the F**king news.

Man dies at Club NME

Your lying in a grave Brian,

whats written on the headstone?....

Re: Man dies at Club NME

DiS Newsfelch: coming soon

Man dies at Club NME

NEWS!
Colin, thank you.
was gonna say how inappropriate the death from above thing was as well

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Alas ye.

Man dies at Club NME

If I was ever in Club NME I'd want to fall off a balcony too.

Man dies at Club NME

The kills isn't much better come to think of it

Man dies at Club NME

£3 to see DFA1979! I can lower my standards for that.

Man dies at Club NME

Some guy died. Stop being so f**king heartless.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Seconded

Re: Man dies at Club NME

"Some guy died"

FEEL the heart in that.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

very touching, wasn't it?

Man dies at Club NME

NME mention this?

Nope, new bit on Babyshambles tho...

Man dies at Club NME

considering a few of us are so quick to remark on the insensitivity of the nme for not making a public announcement about this (likely to be pretty futile anyway), this thread is mostly an embarassment to DiS and it's readership.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

In what respect?

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Clearly in the lack of respect being given to the guy's friends and family by people being so quick to wise crack about the band names and what have you.

I think we can all see the irony in the band names, it doesnt need to be commented on.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

People die all the fucking time. I don't feel sorry for any of them.

Its going to happen to me one day (apparently although I'm talking to my lawyers) and I dont give a shit about that either.

Culture of grief in this country means that we have to mope around all the fucking time. Death happens. Deal with it.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

you are an insensitive idiot who clearly has no idea what it is like to lose someone very close to you. this guy dies in the prime of his life and you're saying 'deal with it'.

one day you're gonna regret your utterly selfish comments just as a friend said similar things to me when i nearly lost a member of my family, 6 months later the table was turned and he expected sympathy. did he get any, no... but he bloody expected it!

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Its not mopeing. If I stabbed your mother in the face, then sent in some clowns to cheer you up afterwards, would that be ok?

Don't you dare be sad or upset son, otherwise you'll be conforming to this culture of grief we have!

Big up yourself for not caring about death. But some people do. Recognise that and grow up.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

I don't cry for dead people. They're dead. What use to them is crying? I cry for myself, however.

The pity I feel for myself when I realise that I have to adjust to the part of my life that they were involved in and I feel sympathy when I know the people that the dead has left behind and for the parts of their lives that they will have to adjust to.

The fact of the matter is that nobody on this message knows the dead guy or his family. I guess if your feeling of sympathy is that strong you can cry about it but surely there's better things to do in your life, like making the most of the time you have with the people still in your life.

So many people are crying at funerals because they simply regret what they didn't get to do.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

seconded.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

devendra felches monkeys

Re: Man dies at Club NME

err the crap jokes, finger pointing and ambulance chasing mostly.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Be fair: reporting the facts some five days after the incident is hardly ambulance chasing in any sense.

But yes, some comments here are a little, well, inappropriate.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Inappropriate? At least I've got one.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Christ, get off your high horse. Even Mel Brookes said:

"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."

Man dies at Club NME

i agree with the above statement

Re: Man dies at Club NME

which one would that be then?

notice the cunning use of the 'reply to this' button.

A Duck Smarter Than A Drunk

I know someone who was there. Apparently, he was drunk and saying "Will I break my leg if I jump off?"

It wasn't an accident. You have to climb over the rail to fall off. What a fucking idiot. Even ducks learn to fly by starting on the ground.

Duck Smarter Than Drunk.

Re: A Duck Smarter Than A Drunk

Doing something stupid does not = deserving to die for it.

Re: A Duck Smarter Than A Drunk

I didn't say he deserved to die. I just said that if you dangle yourself off a balcony at a club and you're drunk, what do you expect?

Re: A Duck Smarter Than A Drunk

"Apparenlty" usually equals, what I'm about to say is probably not correct/even happened, but It's interesting/I want something to say. You, as far as I know, weren't there, so you can't really spread stuff like that unless you know it is true. Not having a go, just think you should be 100% before you say stuff like that.

Re: A Duck Smarter Than A Drunk

"Apparently" equals "What I was told by someone who was there and wasn't drunk."

Jeez. It takes some effort to fall off there : climb over a balcony , let go.... come on! Use your common sense!

Unless he was leaning on a balcony that collapsed then he made a deliberate decision to climb over the balcony - it's not really such a surprise that he fell in the circumstances.

And why then, should I be sympathetic?

Man dies at Club NME

Suprised no one has linched Conor McNicholas - that seems like the reasonable thing to do, being as he's persoanbly to blame for all this.

Or maybe you'd nlame Mr Stella for making the beer that made the guy drunk enough to fall off the balcony?

Or maybe Mr Metal - the guy who made the balcony?

The new Coldplay single is pretty arse isn't it?

Man dies at Club NME

maybe we should find some way to blame the strokes!!!

Re: Man dies at Club NME

FACT ME TILL I FART

Man dies at Club NME

As ever when you get an exchange of diametrically opposed views, both sides miss the point.

We can't pussyfoot around death - it happens, natual and accidental. But we shouldn't be making jokes about it either.

I mean, the odds of someone who knows the deceased reading this are possibly small, but hardly remote. It's like when I read the other day about these kids who grew up with Yorkshire Ripper jokes being told to them, because none of the kids knew that he had killed their mother.

That's not political correctness, it's just being decent. Sorry if my line on this bores any of you.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Pre-fucking-cisely.

I don't see how the arguments of 'nobody knew him, its not like you're all greiving, lets crack out the jokebook' stands here. If you don't have anything to say in the form of a condolence, what is the point of even posting?

It was clearly for cool points, and that's a bit of a sad statement on many readers of this site innit.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

I was at the club to watch my mates band play when the guy appeared on the ground 10 mentres behind us. I can assure you that seeing a guy lying there obviously fighting for his life in pools of blood is no laughing matter and one of the worse things I've had to witness.

I wouldn't wish that on anyone and find some peoples comments on here disgraceful.

I feel for his family and friends, someone of whowm would have witnessed this awful accident

Re: Man dies at Club NME

Shouldn't be making jokes about it?

Are you sure? But death is really funny! And given the choice between po-faced "sensitivity" for something I have absolutely no real feelings about whatsoever, and a good joke, I'd choose the latter. Hell, I hope people say funny things about my death!

And yes, your line on this bores me.

Man dies at Club NME

Well said Babbel, what a bunch of cun#s.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

what right do these fools have to have a fucking opinion on this - its not a debate... Its been reported because there were so many rumours flying around and people who were there were concerned to know what happened to the fella - like you would be if youd witnessed such a horrific thing.

If people cant say anything "nice" then why bother commenting at all.

its called basic human compassion for fucks sake.

idiots.

Man dies at Club NME

Apparently he's not dead.

For all those concerned about the poor guys well being.

Man dies at Club NME

its a difficult one this really. of course to joke about someone dying isn't a particularly clever or indeed nice thing to do however i think its slightly severe to state that people lack compassion.

events that have no direct bearing on ourselves, as in do not directly affect us or our surrounds it it means its easy to be distant from, and indeed make comments that may be deemed 'inappropriate'. however, in reality comedy is used to make light of a situation, whether rightly or wrongly. nothing is meant by it, its just satire. so to be perfectly honest, i think its far from incompaasionate to make comments of the two bands playing the following day or making references from The Day Today. its morbidly amusing!!!

To call the bloke an idiot for falling off however, isn't especially funny.

Re: Man dies at Club NME

it's not funny. but it is true.

Man dies at Club NME

awful.

Man dies at Club NME

its all too awful
pete doherty sneezes-8 pages NME
carl's take on said sneeze etc.
guy presumably sucked in by the whole NME £1.90's
worth of not worthy to wrap chips in world of cheap mcgee

double tragedy

Clubber’s horror balcony jump

A CLUBBER who jumped headfirst from the balcony of a Camden Town nightclub on Friday night walked out of hospital yesterday (Wednesday).
Police had mistakenly earlier confirmed the death of the 30-year-old, who has not been named, after he jumped from the dress circle at Koko and landed headfirst on the busy dancefloor.
He is understood to have told a friend he intended to jump just moments before making his 20-foot leap at the Camden High Street club. Fellow clubbers at the NME-branded night rushed to his aid immediately. They included several staff from sandwich chain Pret a Manger, which had hosted a private function at the club earlier in the evening for all of its London employees.
One said: “I was helping him on the dancefloor but there was not a lot we could do. It was a terrible sight.”
The club shut shortly after the 11pm incident and stayed closed on the normally busy Saturday night while police investigated.
A police spokesman said: “The management of the club has been very helpful.”
A spokesman for Koko said: “Koko takes the safety of its customers very seriously and works hard with our security team to ensure a safe environment for everyone that enters the building.

Re: He's alive

wow,
impressive-he should do it every week, they could charge 4 quid
instead of 3-in fact get rid of the nme and all the bands too and just have him

Man dies at Club NME

Call me evil, I don't care. The dumb fucking cunt should've died and rid the world of an idiot.
