welcome to the black parade

You’ll feel better once you accept this, really; it will be okay, I promise.

My Chemical Romance’s rise has peaked, somewhat, with this single: freshly installed at number one in the UK singles chart, and rightly so considering its nearest rivals, ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ is the most attention-grabbing lead track to precede a much-anticipated album since Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android’ and OK Computer double-header back in the mists of indie time. Immediately recognisable as a MCR jam – super-sized pop-rock hooks are shoehorned into drums that pound like a Saturday morning hangover – but possessing newfound facets of over-the-top indulgence, ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ is, probably, the best number one of the year since ‘Crazy’.

Where Gnarls Barkley’s breakthrough arrived stealthily, though, propelled to its success on the back of a timely television advertisement for some DJ or other’s radio show, MCR’s most-brilliant offering to date was shrouded in thick veils of hype. That it emerges unscathed by such pre-release talking-up is a testament to its overriding qualities: this is loud, brash, tuneful, fun, disposable… it’s perfect pop disguised as some newfangled sub-genre feared by middle-class mothers and fathers across the land.

Your sons and daughters won’t hurt themselves to this song; they won’t mope about the house, sad eyes and disaffected scowls upon their faces. They’ll be air-guitaring like Brian May and battering invisible skins like the ghost of John Bonham. This is rock music absolutely in the tradition of Queen and Led Zeppelin: ridiculous in its pomposity and fantastic in its smile-inciting execution.

Best get used to it: My Chemical Romance is pop’s New Favourite Band. Stuff your mainstream-confusing pigeonholes full with bands that mean nothing, as this quintet’s future holds nothing but acclaim beyond the rock and indie press and success enough to propel them to the stars.

A far more positive review than I expected

but spot on!

This track is marvellous, although I would argue your claim that it's best lead track since Paranoid Android.

downloading it at the moment...

... just to make sure that claim is as ridiculous as it sounds.

It says 'most attention-grabbing', not best...

...like, 'Whoa, this is MCR?'

I don't like it...

I think the melody just sounds like a more upbeat 'I'm Not Okay'.

I don't think it's particulary attention grabbing, its nothing new or exciting.

Also best number one of the year since Crazy it may be, but this is no feat at all....

# Sandi Thom - "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)"
June 4 for 1 week

# Nelly Furtado - "Maneater"
June 11 for 3 weeks

# Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - "Hips Don't Lie"
July 2 for 1 week

# Lily Allen - "Smile"
July 9 for 2 weeks

# McFly - "Please, Please"/"Don't Stop Me Now"
July 23 for 1 week

# Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean - "Hips Don't Lie"
July 30 for 4 weeks

# Beyonce feat. Jay Z - "Deja Vu"
August 27 for 1 week

# Justin Timberlake feat. Timbaland - "SexyBack"
September 3 for 1 week

# Scissor Sisters - "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'"
September 10 for 4 weeks

# Razorlight - "America"
October 8 for 1 week

I think only Deja-Vu and Hips Don't Lie come close...

I'd put good money on the album being absolute tosh.

Beg to differ

I don't think it sounds at all like I'm Not Okay. Might just be me, but that's not what I think of when I listen to it. In fact, I don't think of any song. It's unlike any song I've ever heard before. Also, most of those songs (if not all, there's one or two I haven't heard of) are from a different genre and therefore nearly incomparable.

.

that song and is one of the most embaressing things i've ever had to listen and watch...brass-tings

good review,

I agree :)

Yeah

this is possibly the most pleasantly surprising single of the year so far.

I am confused

isnt this the sort of single dis slaughter, not that i have anything against the track mind. Probably does deserve number one spot ahead of Razorlights "America".

probably? PROBABLY?

ANYTHING deserves number one spot ahead of Razorlight. C'mon, I mean, really...

anyways, its a good song, in its way. I'd never listen to it, but I'd much rather this filled the ears of the kids than any volume of glossy shite R&B or turgid arrogant "indie" courtesy of borrell and his walking band of cancer.

Good review, bravo.

Cunts.

This is the worst song of the decade.

But you're obviously being really open-minded and cool stating otherwise.

Ridiculous.

what are you talking about?

there's no agenda here, someone likes a good pop song, get the fuck over yourself.

Ignore Him

His profile states that "Music Tastes" are My Chemical Romance, then states that its the worst song of the decade.

Although maybe cos he is only 16, we should give him some leeway.....

This is awful though.

And who the hell is Cody Jefferson?

Aw fuck

Wrightylew's back.
Thought he went out the window along with England's Euro 2008 campaign! ;)

13

I almost find that offensive considering I'm 13...

Matter of opinion

That's your opinion. I happen to like the song.

No sir, I don't like it.

But at least it's better than Razorlight.

You just quoted Mr Horse from Ren & Stimpy

and I claim my five pounds.

What?

"‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ is the most attention-grabbing lead track to precede a much-anticipated album since Radiohead’s ‘Paranoid Android’ and OK Computer"

That must be some kind of joke?

And MCR dropped massively after "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" and have gone downhill ever since.

Ewww

Saw them do this song live on "the MTV Awards for some nonsense." It was horribly derivative. Imagine if Queen were really bad at what they did. That will give you an idea.

Well I love My Chemical Romance...

...always have.

First time I heard this song on their MySpace I hated it. Like "what the hell have they done?!", but I think it's so OTT and knowingly so, that after 2 or 3 more listens, you come to appreciate it for what it is. Or maybe thats just me...

Don't take it all so seriously!

.

I see what you mean about the Queen thing with all its grandiose pomposity. I guess the song's cool if you like glory.

Yeah this songs good

But they are appalling live, saw them at Leeds, not really main stage material

not been a fan before

but im excited about this album after the amazing single!

well derr

of course its good
its them

Says the idiot...

...with the MCR user name.

Perhaps you should keep posting on the MCR message board, where such deep, cutting analysis will get you pats on the back and some \m/xEmOhORnSx\m/ rather than the verbal mauling I should have issued you.

By the way

this track can burn in hell. I just don't care about it.

Hear! hear!

What a selfindulgent piece of crap. Of course, you could probably shoehorn most similar pseudo-emotional music into the same classification. I hope to God they HAVE hit their peak. 'Nuff's enuff.

pish

this song/band is one, weedy step above McFly, boring, bland unoriginal and irrelevant. that Radiohead comment is a joke, right? this is American radio fodder at its worst. i'm off to watch Razorlight live in protest.

its stupid

sounds like a charity single colaboration between queen and greenday. and not stupid in a good way, like mark lawrenson. it does make me laugh though, so myspacekudos for that.

Yes

I watched the video on the sight and I thought the same thing, a mix of Queen and Green Day.

okkkk

was this aimed towards me???
cuz if so then sorry for having and opinion
obviously you do too and if you dont like my chemical romance then dont post a note or whatever on a thing about them.
and i have that username cuz i couldnt think of anything else at the time
why dont i just go and change it for you so you dont have anything else to complain about

I pretty much agree

this is just a really good single.

Black Parade

Nevermind Radiohead. Listen to Bowie's '5 Years' - it's massively influntial to Black Parade.
R.I.P Off

So, We're All In Agreement

That DiS has severely overrated this song.

It's ok

but it does sound like i'm not okay, their last pop hit. most certainly better than Kasabians 1st single off of their overhyped album too!

I like this song

And I like the video even more.

And I don't care that they're not cool.

What a claim

Most Waited (cant spell Ant...) Album since Radiohead's double header. That kind of statement makes the review seem a tad dubious.

I expect these sweeping statements in Q or NME not DiS

I've not heard it yet

but I find this ridiculously hard to believe. This is a very C-minus band....

Wow

Everytime I come on here i'm reminded of how fucking miserable 'indie' fans are. Waht the fuck is wrong with a little joy and OTT theatrics in a pop song you scenester cunts?
Wallow with your 'challenging' Squarepusher bootlegs all you want, but i'm going to put MCR on again and fucking SMILE.

Asses.

I have just

listened to it for the first time.

I like it. I can see the Queen comparisons in structure if not, obviously, in sound.

This could well be the best number one for some time, it's what popular music is meant to be.

Having read all this I decided to go on their myspace and listen to it.

Not really sure what all the fuss is about. It's ok. The guitar is really annoying. It's not a particularly special pop song. In fact it's quite annoying generally. For good pop songs in this vein I'd rather listen to Blink 182 or All-American Rejects or something. This going to number one isn't anything to be pleased about. I much prefer Sexyback and Smile.

Scenesters? Please.

That's the only reason little emo-kids listen to shit like this- because people keep touting how important, and more importantly, "cool" it is to listen to. The only scenesters I see associated with this bilge are the same scenesters associated with any similar shit. Not liking this song doesn't mean I'm an "ass," it means I have taste, and am discrete enough not to sign on to this little bandwagon.

Cool to like MCR?

I must have missed that memo

Uh-huhhh

me as well. This song is so bad it's hilarious.

cock

.

Bless you

thankyou

.

i dont ....

understand how people can possibly say this is bland and boring. I can understand it might not appeal to some people or they might not like it. Though the fact of the matter is that this song is quite daring and brave because it is a bit different and very OTT. I cannot believ someone is going to listen to razorlight in protest! If this is bland then razorlights new single must be the blandest song of all time.

People grow up and allow MCR the credit they deserve for writing such a great song. Good review aswell.

x

More like the Bleak Parade

I went to their myspace as well--to see if the their was any truth in it
All I have to say I that I'd rather listen to Razorlight's America than listen to that again...and that's saying something. It's perdictable, dull, and if possible-worse then "The Ghost of You"

.

This is bland. And yes, Razorlight's new single actually is the blandest song of all time.

I'm sorry, but

this is a fucking stinky track. Trying to be clever for the sake of it, smothered in autotune, awfully mixed, and generally cluttered to fuck.

I am really surprised this hit the top of the charts. Seriously now, its just an ordinary wank emo song with a bit of tatty marching band bollocks thrown in for good measure. How experimental and daring is that? It's been done a thousand times before, a thousand years ago, and (you guessed it) a thousand times better.

It just isn't good music.

I've just heard it for the third time.

It gets worse at each listen.

i agree with rspce

you are an ass mancubomega! ffs all you indie people that continually slate anything slightly mainstream are just the same as the emokids that listen to MCR - in fact youre worse! not only are you listening to underground indie cos u think ur cooler but youre taking music too seriously - SMILE u only live once and who cares about the fans of MCR just enjoy the song!

Great song,

Rock needs theatrics, rock is great when OTT. Love it.

awful review

i can't believe that this awful song has been compared to the likes of Led Zeppelin and Queen! this is just a terrible song that has been over hyped. It just sounds like every other My Chemical Romance song to date, except its about 5 mins longer!

A review

not echoing your own opinion doesn't make it "awful".

Led Zeppelin

and Queen are just as bad.
