Only is they are actually FUNNY and not contrived does this make them valid as entertainment? And anyway unless my username was Andrew_Tim0thy_Luk£_C00per surely my 'username' is just as contrived as anyone with a jokey persona - and anyway perhaps I myself am just one but stupid joke?

I say the more made up characters the better. Absurdity should be encouraged. List making should be banned.

Anymore?

Or ever. I just don't like them. I don't want to give some long convoluted psychological reason, because frankly I'm in a bad mood and can't be arsed to do so. But i find actual unintentionally funny comedy idiots a lot funner than made-up ones.

I'm off to burn down Asda.

So that's two things I like you don't like?

Did you know Asda means 'Associated Dairies'?

There are a lot more than

two, to be fair :)

And yes, yes I did. Soon it will mean 'A smouldering demolition area'. BURN ASDA, BURN.

Nothing

I'm just in the mood for petty vandalism, and that's the nearest shop.

fairly do's

with a bit of luck you'll catch Sharon Osbourne in there

you will NEVER catch Sharon Osbourne in there

Even the adverts are probably mocked up in a studio.

some are good

some are rubbish

I think properly formed characters a la Toby Masters are fun, Barney is a new lowpoint, of the world in general.

.

I've found very few

of the explicit comedy users particularly funny, though prole does make an interesting point - a vast majority of people on the board are trying to be funny on a pretty constant basis. Everybody is trying to create an identity for themselves, both on here and in real life. I was about to write that the only difference with comedy usernames is people hiding their identity, but do people have a 'real' identity anyway? Is personality not just a series of images, claims and experiments?

One of my favourite thinking points at the moment is about how humour is so much about the negotiation of power relations within social groups. Certain authoritative individuals come to dominate the view of 'what's funny' within a social group. In 'real life' I've often noticed how the sense of humour of a group will be dominated by one or two individuals who enforce their dominance, sometimes by literally refusing to laugh at things other people say.

The same is to a certain extent true of this board. When it comes to comedy usernames, it only takes a user with widely accepted comedy talent to say 'that's shit' in an articulate and withering way and a lot of people will follow suit. A kind of comedy consensus is built up. I'm not saying this is a good or bad thing. Its just interesting. Maybe comedy usernames are useful in the sense that they can challenge this orthodoxy. Shit am I straying from the point here?

Is it wrong that I did some little lols at barney? See the way I phrased that as a question, like I was afraid to admit it?
