Reviewers at DiS HQ have been getting down and dirty. Fighting in their masses to get ahead in the lines to review The Arcade Fire. Why? Because, quite simply the plaudits are running out, and the last people in will have literally, nothing to say that hasn't been joyously preached before. And so it goes, with the second single from the quite wonderful 'Funeral' LP that it's only our fine perspicacity that allows us to find words to sum up our excitement (still) at hearing this song coarse it's way through our speakers.

'Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)' is awesome; awe inspiring in its ability to be driving yet somehow soothing, intimate yet grandiose, catchy yet utterly unique. It's that thudding kick drum, the deranged scream melding with the lead-guitar bassline, the fact that in four minutes, it stops and starts like a beautiful old motorcar and sounds totally now. But timeless. Naturally.

Singer Win offers strangely affecting gothic lyrics "Ice has covered up my parents / hands don't have any dreams don't have any plans / Growin' up in some strange storm / nobody's cold, nobody's warm," and, as we wrap ourselves up warm by the fire, with the warm glow of the Arcade Fire in front of us, be safe in the knowledge that they're a proper band. An important band.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Single of the year so far.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

If you don't have the album already, go and bloody buy it!

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

'An important band'

Too bloody right. I marginally prefer Laika to this, but it's streets ahead of anything else that'll be released this week. Or most weeks for that matter

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Geek question: is Laika in reference to the beautiful sounding band by the same name?

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

i think its about the dog.

Laika are indeed wonderful. better than this lot anyway - i might be more forgiving if everyone hadn't made them out to be better than sex beforehand i spose.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

What's on the b-side? Is it any good/worth the purchase?

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

How is it released on the 18th?

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

If you don't already have the album go and buy it!... and buy this too, it may have extra tracks.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

I posted twice somehow meh!

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

feel like i'm missing something with this band. saw them on jools holland, and just thought...they..weren't...very...good. don't hurt me

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

your missing out, borrow a copy of the album, sit back and enjoy, seriously good

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Yeah, I thought they were disappointing on Jools. Having seen them at both Kings College & in Bristol, I think they're absolutely stunning.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

i thought they were pretty damn good on j00lz actually.

awesome single, by the way. and album.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

This is not even the best song on the album and it's still brilliant.

I have yet to see them live :-( I hope they do another UK tour. Please come to Nottingham, guys.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

the second track on jools holland was really really good, i havent really 'got' the singles though.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

joy! joy! joy!

that is all.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

do people on DIS only like wierd shit?

bought the last single was most impressed with the A side and B. so before i get a torrent of abuse, i was only asking.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

>do people on DIS only like wierd shit?

It's healthy to like a bit of everything I think. I do find myself constantly standing up for the 'mainstream' on here, so to speak. But one man's 'weird' is another man's 'normal', isn't it?

I mean, if anything, they remind me of Talking Heads. And I thought this before I discovered that they're covering them (with David Byrne guesting) on the B side.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

I love this song. It sweeps you up and carries you along before depositing you on shores of happiness. Nothing wierd about that.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

"Reviewers at DiS HQ have been getting down and dirty. Fighting in their masses to get ahead in the lines to review The Arcade Fire."

Not me.
Arcade Fire kinda wash over me... though I do sometimes find myself pounding my thighs with drumsticks in time to a few tracks. The ones what have BIG drums on 'em.
Mostly, though... bovvvered.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Musically, I think they're great, but I'm not overly convinced by the singer. I'm a bit picky about singers who can't actually sing: for example, yes to Jason Lytle, no to Wayne Coyle.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Yeah great song, shall have to buy in order to get the B-sides. They were great on Jools I thought - good to see a bunch of Canadian weirdo's dressed in 1920's style clothes amongst the usual bunch of R'n'B stars who Holland sucks up to...............

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Worth buying for the yummy glow-in-the-dark 7"

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

baaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, bleat

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Yeah I get wafts of Talking Heads whilst listening. Strangely, I never feel like listening to the album but when I stick it on I remember how good it is. It's not really a record you stick on for quick fix hits. It's more of a lay back and take it all in album. Good stuff.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

This was enough to encourage me to splash out on the album. Today.

Must say I'm impressed, but who wouldn't be?

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

no five stars ?

what sort of bsides does it have ?

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

This song is just too damn good! And i thought they were unbelievable on Jools Holland, it hurt me deeply that i'd missed them the week before in bristol, due to lack of funds. And last night i was told they played for an hour then did an hour long encore.... sometimes i wish i wasn't such a macho manly man, so i could cry.

Re: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Whoever told you they did an hour long encore is a lying bastard.

However, it was probably the best gig I've seen, so feel free to cry anyway.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

The Arcade Fire are the classic example of a great word-of-mouth success that the mainstream media have now claimed as their own. I found out about them via Pitchfork and Rough Trade shops, picked up 'Funeral' last November and absolutely loved it. I still do - it's a beautifully crafted, intense and uplifting record, but many people seem to have become sceptical of its merits following the belated endorsements of the NME et al. It needs to be heard in its entirety - perhaps the tracks don't work that well as singles. They are stunning live - much instrument swapping and real energy. The King's College show was fantastic - gig of 2005 so far!

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

I think they're ok.

I can see why some people like them, but I can't see why there's such an overwhelming response to their music, as if their music just flooded the world and are killing off all bands, even the good ones, that just aren't....quite.....as....good.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

I think they're quality, and while i do prefer Laika, this is still a brilliant track, the videos pretty cool aswell:D

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

just an amazing band, best i've heard in a long, long time, amazing musicians, amazing songs, i smile every time Power out comes on my MP3 player. Saw them in Bristol recently, 'twas mindblowingly good. I heard of them last year through insound.com, a great American indie site (i think) that has introduced me to countless great bands, such as The Decemberists, check it out

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Saw them in Manchester and can safely say they are the best band I have ever seen. Just totally unique and brilliant.
