Moby - he's got a new single out, hence this 'news' - is unhappy at critics who wrote that his 18 album sounded quite a lot like the album before it, the advertisement agencies' favourite, Play.
Musicrooms.net quotes the New Yorker - whose new single 'New York, New York' is out now - as follows:
"It did seem funny when 18 was released and a lot of journalists - especially in the UK - criticised it for being similar to Play.
"These are the same journalists who love Oasis - every record they make sounds the same. They love The White Stripes, and apart from the last White Stripes record, their records sound the same."
Bitch bitch bitch... I thought bald vegans were meant to be nice? Have you seen Moby on Cribs? He seems so nice on that show, so why all this hate? Some people...
knobs ahoy!
Moby is a knob but so are journalists.
He reminds me of Emily from Emmerdale.
END OF.
He's got a bit of a point
when he says that some artists get praised for rehashing stuff and others get a kicking for it...
yeah. i can understand what he means
And how some bands can also get a bollocking for changing their sound.
yeah
similarly with the Radiohead "oh no they aren't radiohead anymore" Kid A-stuff, lolz - http://www.drownedinsound.com/release/view/2419
that review
is legendary.
it is!
on a semi-serious note though, the whole creating something Vs being a middle-man who justs writes about stuff that other people do thing means even shit bands win these Critics Vs Artists arguments really.
I enjoy reading reviews and they certainly serve a purpose, but really it's like...critics = spectator sport/vicarious living
I'd like to politely disagree.
Writing about music can be just as original, creative and inspiring as being a musician. Exhibit A = Drowned in Sound. And while some critics can seem like they're trying too hard, and losing sight of the music (Careless Talk Costs Lives occasionally fell into this trap) I'd rather read something that's aiming to be a piece of good writing in its own right.
Also, to be blunt and sweeping, most musicians who carp about critics being stupid are making dull, uninspired, uninspiring music that deserves the kicking it's been given.
I'd like to impolitely disagree!
You poohead! :P
"Writing about music can be just as original, creative and inspiring as being a musician. Exhibit A = Drowned in Sound."
Are you joking? Creating music or someone who writes about it?
"I'd rather read something that's aiming to be a piece of good writing in its own right."
That's exactly the problem with bad music reviews (note: Pitchfork), it forgets it's purpose and ends up being about how clever the reviewer can prove they are. If you're a creative writer, go write a novel/screenplay/whatever. Music criticism should be about informing people about stuff they might like, not some cod-Hunter S Thompson guff or whatever.
I enjoy reading good reviews (here in particular) and being a music journalist must beat most other jobs, but it boils down to "writing about other people doing things cos I can't" It's a public information service, not an art.
You make it sound as if you'd rather read a review of something than listen to it.
I think we're gonna have to politely agree to impolitely disagree on this one.
:P
And I did say "some critics can seem like they're trying too hard, and losing sight of the music", a category I'd put a large wodge of Pitchfork writers into.
"Writing about other people doing things cos I can't" - plenty of reviewers are also making music themselves. Even if they're not, writing about music isn't an inferior skill to writing music.
"It's a public information service, not an art" - a good review ticks both boxes.
Pretty Girls Make Graves - Elan vital
another good example. "Oh no. Its not the New Romance so its shite and boring"
that was meant
to be in reply to the radiohead post
I like Moby.
He lives by what he believes in.
what
touching his knob against unwitting people in public?
You cant talk!
groper :P
all bald vegans are the same
to be fair, there are only two of them
Who's the other one?
I'm scared.
Him from Right Said Fred?
Oh, no: he's a bald gay.
Gays, vegans... I get confused.
What about the fella who used to present Crystal Maze
?
Bald, gay, vegan? Surely that's too much to ask for...
yeah true most bands write music
that is "There" sound ... but every moby song sounds the same
i swear he just changes key and plays the same song over and over
he writes a riff and thinks
i want this to sound more like a toyota advert!!
small mans complex
i know a gay vegan!
...but sadly he is not bald. Otherwise it would be a full set.
you should replace his shampoo with acid
it may cause some consternation at first but once you point him in the direction of the dis message boards all will become clear
most of 18
actually didnt sound anything like play, but the songs that did were such blatant and ridiculous rehashes (and all sounded so similar to each other, let alone the songs on play) it made the whole record seem like it. in this world has to be one of the laziest songs ever released by a "credible" artist. if he ever puts out a song with that same infernal mid-90s drums and i-cant-really-play-the-piano-but-i-try vamp combination i will hunt him down and kill him. even if it doesnt have an alan lomax field recordings sample on top of it
hang on
journalists praising every Oasis record? why are these people still at large?
Because
...ensuring you don't lose the popular vote means not potentially jeopardising your much needed advertising income, and access to artists with whom an interview will guarantee a decent number of sales of your paper.
Well, you did ask. :-)
To rubbish
all music journalists is beyond the pale. Obviously there are those out there that do it for the right reasons, you don't need to look far. But to be honest, I don't trust Moby, I find him sinister - like a snake wearing clothes.
OH FUCK OFF YOU HIPPY
that is all.
