The Radio Times has this week named Jonathan Ross as the most important person on British radio.

Ross was praised for the success of his weekend Radio 2 show, topping a poll compiled by 70 figures in the industry.

He is followed by fellow Radio 2 presenter Terry Wogan and Radio 4's John Humphrys at second and third respectively, while Xfm's Christian O'Connell comes in fourth (the highest placing for a commercial radio DJ).

Radio 1's Chris Moyles and Zane Lowe also ranked highly. This morning, Moyles' "hilarious" idea was to smack one of his co-presenters in the nuts. Cutting edge, that.

The top ten looks like this (source: Radio Times):
1 Jonathan Ross (Radio 2)
2 Terry Wogan (Radio 2)
3 John Humphrys (Radio 4)
4 Christian O'Connell (Xfm and Radio Five Live*)
5 Eddie Mair (Radio 4)
6 Peter Allen (Radio Five Live)
7 Chris Moyles (Radio 1)
8 Zane Lowe (Radio 1)
9 Jane Garvey (Five Live)
10 Chris Evans

*O'Connell is to move to Virgin

DiScuss: Are there many radio shows that you regularly tune into? Any presenters really worth their salaries? Does Jonathan Ross tire of arse-licking his celebrity guests on the telly, only to slate their next movie on Film 200X?

This man is not funny
This man is not funny
This man is not funny
This man is not funny

This man is a Charmless Man who wont shut up. I'd say he was worse than Chris Moyles

Ross named most important radio personality

rob da bank

annie mac

huw stephens

very radio one i know but those three are worth a listen every time (and annie macs worth a look too...)

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

Annie Mac and Huw Stephens would be much better if they didn't talk all over the sodding tunes. Must be something they picked up from the unhealthiest man in radio, Zane Lowe.

I think Woss' problem is that a) he's trying WAY too hard to amuse and b) he needs a rest. His own TV show is going from bad to worse, and the whole "lisping, bumbling idiot" act (whether or not it is an act) is getting tiresome.

Plus, he beat Wogan, which should NEVER happen.
Surprised Moyles got so high, but there are people with low standards...

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

the tv show has been a shambles for the last two series its just not funny anymore, it needs a new format, a new day, and a new time

his radio show on the other hand is top class, they need to bump wogan off sharpish and get Ross on breakfast

And where the hell is Mark Radcliffe in that list?

Ross named most important radio personality

I'm quite partial to a bit of J-Wo every now and again but i can't see why Wogan has ranked so high. If John Peel was still with us he'd blow this lot out of the water.

Ross named most important radio personality

yeh hes not as bad as moyles thou- hes just a fat unfunny nob. Ross is asslicking, annoying and irritating, but not a nob

Ross named most important radio personality

i love jonathan ross.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

but not, like, sexually.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

And me.
I laugh at his show.
Very entertaining.
Awards don't seem to have much connection with what music anyone plays, though. Haven't for years. The cool thing about Peely was that he was actually a great radio personality. A few people are capable of doing the kind of music show he did, with the same kind of remit, but it's difficult to find someone as good to listen to. I like Shaun Keaveny on Xfm. It's mad that Iain Baker from Jesus Jones is a daytime radio dj these days.

Ross named most important radio personality

Where's the legend that is Alan Green!?!!?

Ross named most important radio personality

Jonathan Ross is better on TV than radio. But then, I have no faith in radio, it's a bit of a waste of time.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

No, I disagree. Woss is FAR better on radio, where he is at his best. He seems to be everywhere on TV at the moment, much like that annoying, unfunny twat Jimmy Carr.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

I agree, Ross' TV show is just plain horrible and someone should put the brakes on it.

"Radio 1's Chris Moyles and Zane Lowe also ranked highly. This morning, Moyles' "hilarious" idea was to smack one of his co-presenters in the nuts. Cutting edge, that."

You must have been listening, then :p

Gotta say I love Chris Moyles' show, but it could be my immature side.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

I was.
Tho' only for a bit.
I can only get radio 1 (and a million pirate stations) in my bedroom.
But I listen to 6Music over breakfast.

Re: Ross named most important radio personality

I listened for the first time in years for about 5 minutes this morning in the car (all the way to work - hey hey it's great up north) when Moyles mocked his assistant for not being able to use a tv remote (nice to know they're interested), only for her to reply (without a hint of irony) that it would be unprofessional to turn the tele on while some poor fool was trying to read the news. Professionalism? Boorish twat.

Ross named most important radio personality

Jonathon ross is near the top of my list of alltime classic people.

I have only listened to radio once and it was jonathon ross.

A caller rang into say he'd seen jonathon ross's wife present a show on UK living and went on to say theres obviously only one talented presenter in the ross family to which Jonathon said 'yeah paul ross' and every one in the stuidio burst out laughing.

And on room 101 he described his brother as 'a purveyor of poor quality television.

In conclusion I love jonathon Ross but hate paul ross. No win no fee, wtf?

Ross named most important radio personality

I think Woss is a very funny bloke!

Ross named most important radio personality

I just wish all these other Music/radio presenters had a keen interest in music.

Ross named most important radio personality

Good stuff for O'connell, shame about him moving to an even worse station though.

Ross named most important radio personality

KILL ZANE LOWE.

Or at least replace him with Steven Hawking. Who would be much more listenable.

THAT is all.

Ross named most important radio personality

Woss's TV show is fecking great- the last one with Motley Crue was just brilliant.
Moyles used to be really funny, but now he's slowly developing into Johnny Vegas (actually, who's ever seen those two in the same room? mmmm..... #strokes chin in attempt to look pondersome#)

Ross named most important radio personality

he always flirts like a crippled old ugly leper with the frightened pretty girl celebrities

Ross named most important radio personality

the jonathan ross radio show is quite good really, considering. he's less irritating and actually a bit funny on the radio. i listen to zame lowe to er, keep in tune wid teh kids.
its huw/annie mac/6music for me.

Ross named most important radio personality

Most, if not all, awards that suggest superiority in highly dynamic fields, like radio presenting, or music, or acting, are meaningless at the best of times. It's just more coniving marketing in my view. And who needs the most marketing - the shit ones!

Ross named most important radio personality

I think Jonathan Ross is quality.

Ross named most important radio personality

If Peel was still alive, he'd have won it, since the personality you heard on the radio was actually a real person, not some whacky front...

For me, it's Rob De Bank, Annie Mac, Huw Stevens, MARY ANNE HOBBS (her name requires capitals at all times), and Lamo, of course.

Ross named most important radio personality

I'm warming to him. He played Martha on Saturday and him and Lamacq were the only two mainstream djs to play Kaiser Chiefs 'Oh My God' first time around.
